Hopefully it's not a load of arce...
It's sub £40 lots of places now, which for me is impulse buy territory if something is reviewing well.

Tempted after watching the reviews but think I'll wait for a slight price drop. Still playing Pokémon Sword!

I like the BotW vibe and the monster hunter esque loop sounds exciting, but turn based battles turn me off.
Be interested in what you guys think.

In what way is it like MH? Is this significantly different to Pokemon Sun?

In what way is it like MH? Is this significantly different to Pokemon Sun? Never played a pokemon game before, so can't compare, but watching reading previews and watching videos, seems when you go out into the world, you have a base camp that you then do missions from (starting by hunting low level pokemon and working up through to tougher ones), and return to when you've done what has been asked. Which has drawn comparisons to MH series.

With some discounts I got the price down to about £33, so seeing as the general consensus was fairly positive I gave it a punt. Have to wait until next week for delivery. Just having a single player focus is a bit of a relief from the usual stress of hunting round trying to find other players to trade with that usually goes along with the series.

Not having a rival is nice for once too. Got so sick of them in other games!
Just started it... Holy shit this is a tedious opening! Just let me play the damn game already!

Watched a review of this and have to say it does look a bit drab. Might have just been the area they got most of the footage from but it looked very muted and grey. I think the comparisons to BotW may be being a bit kind

I think the comparisons to BotW may be being a bit kind I know I'm cynical by design, but I had a good chuckle at the notion that a Pokèmon game would even try to be as ambitious as BotW.

It's nothing like BOTW, not sure where the comparison is even coming from. It does feel like a breath of fresh air for the series, though. Played a few hours and now that I'm past the tedious opening it's pretty enjoyable. Especially love how wild Pokémon encounters are all done in the open world. You can even start moving as soon as the battle is done with no transition back to the open world, which makes grinding feel far less tedious than past games. Using your Pokémon to collect stuff and gaining XP for it is nice too.
My main issue so far is the tasks for completing the Pokédex. Some of them are fine and you'll do them naturally just by using or fighting that specific Pokémon, but why the fuck would I want to capture 30 Bidoof? Performance seems fine to me so far and I'm usually pretty sensitive to frame drops. At least compared to the open world bits of SW/SH, anyway.

The girl said that this is the game she wanted sword and shield to be. As a big pokefan, she’s really enjoying it

I thought the comparisons to BotW were just the visuals. From what I gathered from the review, I can see how it could be compared to BotW in how it has changed the formula quite dramatically by adding an open world In the mood for something new as I'm still waiting for Advance Wars, whenever that has disappeared to, but I'm not sure Pokemon is it
edit: Disappointed it's pronounced with a hard c

She's finished Angel* and I want the telly back. *That muppet episode was actually funny. The other 120 odd hours of it can go straight to hell.

With the BotW comparisons, it doesn't help with the stuff being shown in videos.
Watch the start of this one, that music even evokes BotW feelings 😅

Enjoying this so far, not really been to bothered about Pokémon before. Graphics are fine, it's running on switch after all.
Only gripe is no cloud save so having to play on full switch as I want to play on TV when home but much prefer the lite handheld.

Yeah, sword/shield had the same lack of cloud saves. Utterly bizarre that it's not a mandatory thing across all games if you're subbed to their online plan. Did a factory reset recently and had to kiss my save goodbye.

Speaking of Breath of the Wild, that, Witcher III and Dragon Quest XI have spoiled me for RPGs having jump buttons. I'm really missing one here. Don't need Link's stamina climbing, would just like to hope over fences and boulders. Ducking into grasses is nice, but there's no reason you couldn't do both.

I'm right with you there, I find anything without a jump button really jarring now, e.g. I tried to get into FFXV for the umpteenth time a couple of weeks back and caught myself swearing at a fence.

There is a jump button of sorts when you progress the story a bit.

Just finished the story portion. 31 hours. A tad harder than a mainline game. Graphic issues didn't really bother me that much. I've really enjoyed it though.
Post game awaits.

Just started it... Holy shit this is a tedious opening! Just let me play the damn game already! Playing a few (older) nintendo games recently, holy shit they do go on and on at the beginning. it's hard enough to get the kids into non-online games at the best of times, but why do we always have to click through 10 minutes of boring lore dialogue before actually getting to the fun stuff? Not sure if it'd be better or worse now they have voice actors.

I was shocked at how slow the beginning section is. It starts off well after the prologue where it drops you in the field but then very quickly after it forces you to go back to the village and you just get hours of unskippable dialogue and explanations.

How would those playing this compare it to Sword/Shield?
I haven't really played Pokémon before, other than emulating an older one many years ago. I bounced off Sword/Shield a bit. I didn't hate it, but found it all very samey and capturing Pokémon felt unintuitive.
I'm tempted to go back and give it another go, but perhaps just going for this new one would be better.
