I'm reading The Two Towers at the moment and I'm enjoying this series more. Fuck me, but TTT is a bloody slog. About halfway through it is when I gave up. I admit I was a spotty teenager in the eighties then but I still don't want to try again.

Jackson was 100% correct to cut between the two main threads of that one rather than Tolkien’s approach of doing one then the other. I guess maybe it was the literary form of the day but half the book being heroic battling and then half being unbroken coverage of a rainy Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition made for a bit of a slog.

I swear to god man, it's the fucking ents. I could literally feel my life ebbing away as I read it.
Don't get me started on the fucking songs either.

Four episodes in, and things are starting to move, but it all seems pretty low stakes so far.
I guess part of the problem here is that they know it's gonna be at least 4-5 seasons so they didn't wanna blow their load early. Do we even know when season 2 is planned to air yet?

Galadriel. Another episode of her refusing to sit down !
I’m sure the internet is all Not My Galadriel, but Morfydd Clark alright by me.

I don't mind this new Galadriel, except for the fact that she seems really thick in the head. Did she seriously need that guy to spell out for her why the queen lady got pissed off?
That aside, things aren't making a lot of sense anyway, but it's a pleasant enough watch. Just wish they would stop with the melodramatic pauses. And it could do with a few more characters who don't hate their life.

So what you're saying is... the show needs a bit of Tom.

Ehhhh, treading water already? Over an hour to deliver a single sentence message and fanny about in Numenor and Moria.
Patchy stuff so far.

Though not as bad as last week's horse ride, this week's slow-mo shot was still completely pointless and would have been much better in normal time. Wonder what we'll get next week. And a she planning on standing on that little boat for the whole journey? Sit down!

I still think its really good. Although my guess is they wanted that slo-mo bit to feel like one of the ones toward the end of Fellowship and it just didn’t have those stakes. I’m not sure I believe that the old man with the harfoots is Sauron.
Perhaps the sword will possess the evil elf and he’ll be the one to embody him.
And I wonder if we’ll meet any of the other dwarf or human kings before the season is up? It doesn’t feel like anyone is in a hurry to create any rings yet.

I don't think the slo-mo was the problem in of itself. The problem is that she had an expression right out of a David Lynch movie, and the slo-mo made it more disturbing.

It reminded me of Amanda Seyfried's weird face from Twin Peaks S3.

Agree the stakes are a little low. Galadriel raising an army of Númenoreans seems an unlikely 180 in a very short space of time with very little evidence.
We keep hearing about the Southlands needing help but it's being represented by one tiny village, so the scale of the threat seems really limited. I'm looking forward to the next episode but by following these very small groups it's limiting the world building.

Yeah same, I thought that would be impossible with his wonky face, but I hardly notice that now. Definitely the best character.

Is what’s happening in Moria the precursor to them disturbing the balrog?

They delved too deep and woke the nameless fear… who has a name… plus is mithril supposed to be new now… and James Delos dwarf has really cornered the market for being stuck in a room with only his son visiting him.
Elrond’s got to turn into Hugo Weaving by the time Isildur grows up, too. I know Numenoreans live long lives but it’s hardly ‘the ageless elves’ is it?

I was also a bit surprised at Mithril being discovered. As I though it had been about from the First Age.

Seems to be just blurring together now for me over the 4 episodes. All a bit loose and meandering.

Yeah I thought Mithril was rare and ancient rather than the latest hot new thing.
Although the balrog was also known as Durin’s Bain so makes sense that this is the first indication of him getting greedy and letting something loose that he shouldn’t. Timeline wise I don’t know when Moria fell since there are centuries between now and Frodo’s journey and we’ve still got the forging of rings, prosperous times and wars to go.

I assume they’re going to tie Moria’s fall into the books rather than Peter Jackson’s more truncated timeline (at least Gimli makes it seem so) but it’s still got centuries of life at this point.
Next week’s episode now guaranteed to be ‘The Fall of Moria’.
Edit: I’ll be honest, I’m only watching this to try and puzzle out who Sauron might be. It’s either Adar (I don’t think so, why would he have scars?), Halbrand (which is going to make it weird if Galadriel fucks him), we’ve not seen him yet or (my guess) the showrunners haven’t even decided yet. That would make for some very loose plotting and mean we’re just treading water for the moment, which is certainly what it feels like.

I disregarded that because it makes the least sense of all. So you’re probably right.

It’s the closest to a LOTR / Watership Down crossover we’re ever likely to see, so I don’t mind it.

I'm going to assume that Isildur's not-friends and sister will eventually kick the bucket in unsightly and painful ways. Guy gotta have a few extra traumas before the whole ring thing.
