There is quite likely a legal reason behind it.

Nah, Spencer clarified why yesterday and just said it's because of how the deal went where they weren't even sure it was going to go ahead even a week before it closed they hadn't even got to the point where they have their guys go into AB to get things going and obviously that takes time. I think he said they were looking early January to get things onto Gamepass

Fair enough, I certainly won't be buying Diablo 4 yet then. Wonder if I can get a World of Warcraft sub for free. I hope not as Ive been clean since Cataclysm.

It's not free Yeah, if I was using GP I’d max out my membership at the current price. In terms of CoD surely only the base game is going to be free right?

You don't pay for anything else other than the base game with cod. Maps are always free now and you pay for skins and battle passes if you want. Although you only pay for one pass as long as you finish them you have enough points to get the next.

Shows how much I know about CoD I guess. I always figured you had to pay for a battlepass to be able to play the next batch of maps. I just don’t understand how any of this makes financial sense for Microsoft, but then again it’s probably stuff like Candy Crush, it all stacks up.

It's Candy Crush and CoD mobile, they allow entry into the mobile market which is just huge and I believe Microsoft are setting up a mobile store.

Doesn't candy crush make a billion a year by itself or something crazy like that.

Doesn't candy crush make a billion a year by itself or something crazy like that. Yeah it's just over that I think and CoD mobile is also a monster, the console market just pales in comparison. From a business pov they've got a constant revenue stream from Candy Crush, an entry into the mobile market and a content farm from the console stuff. It's hilarious that it was framed as CoD being the most important thing when it really, really isn't.

Mw2 generated over a billion revenue in 10 days at launch (source activision). God knows how much it's made since then, judging by the skins I see people wearing it's probably quite a bit.

In the interview with Spencer on YouTube he's pretty open that they went shopping for a mobile publisher and in their research discovered that King/Activision were probably the best one they could get. So yeah, it's all about the mobile.
It's a good interview, if you listen to it. He jokes about wanting a new Hexen, discusses doing Quake-style remasters of older games, and reminisces about Sierra adventures.

I didn't even know CoD Mobile was a thing. I'm kind out of the loop since I stopped listening to the Bombcast.

Did it gain traction? Is Fortnite still a thing?

CoD Mobile is massive. As is Fortnite. As I understand it, there are loads of kids nowadays that game on tablets and have little interest in consoles. Things like Minecraft, Fortnite, Genshin Impact and CoD are big money makers in the mobile space, as well as your traditional mobile games like Candy Crush that appeal more to older players as time passers. Mobile gaming is also huge in Asia. Mobile gaming is now half of all revenue for gaming. Numbers from last year on gamesindustry.biz - www.gamesindustry.biz/gamesindustrybiz-presents-the-year-in-numbers-2022Activision Blizzard was the second biggest publisher by consumer spending in mobile.

So all those things we were afraid of in 2013 finally became reality. MS goes digital only, and tablets are taking over the market.

There are some decent games on mobile, but I just can’t bring myself to play anything that requires my full attention, a specific amount of time or any kind of effort.

Aye, mobile gaming is still throwaway to me. Although I know someone who spent thousands on that star wars FTP game some years ago to get to the top of the leaderboard. Good job buddy.

Marvel Snap was the last thing I really put some time into on the mobile but I'm actively trying to spend less time on my phone so mobile gaming is never going to be a good fit for me.

It depends what the game is. Bloons TD6 is probably my most played game of the last few years, tbh. I fucking love a good tower defence.
