All the brouhaha over Dyling Light taking 500 hours to complete got me wondering about how long I actually do spend playing games. I imagine that on this site I'm probably one of the more "casual" players, as I barely manage half an hour on the Xbox most days, but all the same I genuinely balked at the idea of spending that much time on one game.
Anyway, I decided to go through my Xbox, Switch, and Steam history to find out how long I spend playing a game, and sure enough most games - even relatively big ones that I completed - show as less than 50 hours. And, unsurprisingly, the ones that push 100 hours are the likes of Pokemon, Halo, and Mass Effect; RPGs I really enjoyed or games with loads of extra content/multiplayer. And then Stardew Valley is about 130 hours, natch.
Amusingly, some of my most-played games are Peggle 2 and Ultimate Word Games on Windows - that Wordament/crossword thingie. Both of those I've played for about 100 hours.
I was unsurprised to discover that my most-played game of all was Civ VI on Steam, because I have a tendency to put that on "in the background" if I'm doing stuff on the PC. However, I was genuinely amazed - and, frankly, a big disturbed - to discover I've played it for over 1,500 hours. That, to me, is ridiculous. And now I've just bought it on the Xbox, too.
So: I reckon my playtimes are relatively paltry compared to most here. But what's your average? How much do you like to play? Personally I still prefer games with relatively short campaigns but hopefully a lot of extra stuff for me to dip into if I'm so inclined. And puzzle games. And Civ.

I probably manage 5-10 hours per week on average, can be more in winter/less in summer.

I could easily do 5 hours a night if I wanted. When I've got something I'm enjoying I probably do 20 hours a week. Haven't done anything near that in quite a long time though - I can't seem to stick with anything at the moment, and just do a few hours here and there on various things.

At the moment I'm a bit hooked on a game and I'm playing it whenever I can which means a couple of hours a day. I've played about 64 hours since Christmas. Before then though, I hadn't played anything for a couple of months. I tend to play one game at a time and play open world games, so my totals tend to be 100+ hrs / game. I think last year I had 2 or 3 games in this bracket.
I think the most I ever played on a game was Lord of The Rings Online where my playtime was measured in days not hours. I think I'd spent something like 1,500 hours (over 60 days (I can't really recall)). That was my main game for a lot of years and I was living on my own (obviously!) for most of that time.
I do still have the old chestnut of thinking "if I'd have learned a language or an instrument instead" thing, but I enjoy gaming and its my way of relaxing.

Depends on the game really. Dark souls - daren't look. But most stuff I'll play to completion and then normally leave it at that. And I generally pootle about in games, so my rule is probably, if it takes 20 hours to complete, I'll be on it for 30.
But taking the last few weeks as an example, I think I've done about 5-6 hours of Resident Evil 8, and maybe about 7-8 hours on Botw. And that's it I think.
It's all fits and bursts nowadays.

More than I should but not as much as I'd like to. Depends if I'm into a game. Generally it's only Souls that will make me choose gaming over other activities. Other games I can take or leave and would quite happily do the odd hour here and there, but when I get my Souls head on I do tend to piss about more than I should playing them. I don't normally finish many games that AREN'T souls-likes so if I get 5-10 hours out a game I've grabbed in a sale I'm normally pretty happy. Take AC Odyssey for example, I'm nowhere near finishing it but after 20 hours (which is the upper limit and has accumulated since I bought it nearly a year ago) I'm pretty satisfied that I've had a nice wee time piddling about in Ancient Greece. Over 20 hours I'm going to need to be seriously invested in something, which pretty much never happens (see above).
These days in fact, I tend to grab something in a sale, spend an evening or two on it (maybe 3 hours in total), satisfy my curiosity and then never play it again.
I am considering applying for a degree to study part time to try and give my vacuous life some purpose mind you, so if I decide to do that, then between work, family, music and that, I may as well sell all my consoles.

Really depends on the game and how into it I am at a given time. Time of year plays a pretty big part too (I'm far more likely to play a game for days on end in the darker winter months)
"Too much" is probably the short answer...

I don't watch television, and seldom watch films so pretty much all my free time that could be used for entertainment is available for games if need be.
Still, 500 hours? No way. I'll play until I lose interest or I reach the end. Story lines do make a difference too, a story twist right at the end of a game meant I could never get through that final push to get to the end credits.

I start to lose interest in almost any game, no matter how good once it gets to over 100 hours, BOTW being probably the only exception...

This thread should have a poll with many, many options.
Personally, I tend to do an hour or two most evenings, on average. Unless I have a lazy day, in which I will do most of my gaming in a single day, rather than spread out over a week.
I find the more I game, the less in sync with the rest of life I become. I forget events, etc...

If I'm into a game I'll play a few hours a day, assuming I don't have other commitments.
I find many games can outstay their welcome somewhere between 20-30 hours.
There are a definitely exceptions but if a game promises a 100 hour *story* it actively puts me off as I know I'm unlikely to finish it. And tbh even if I enjoy it the time commitment puts me off (though I feel that way about loads of things. There are TV shows I haven't started watching because if I like it I'll have to watch 10 seasons of something).
There are very few games where I feel compelled to complete absolutely everything.

Overall, however long it takes to finish a game. Not worried about backlogs (haven't really got one) or moving on to another game if I'm enjoying what I'm already playing
In terms of a single sitting, depends on the type of game. If it's something like Mario, probably an hour or two as they're so immediate that you get a lot in in a short time. Bigger games, can go to two or three hours or just lose track completely until it's getting light outside (BotW)
Sometimes play a game every night, sometimes play nothing for days. My favourite genre is platform games and they tend not to have heavy time requirements and you don't have to worry about forgetting story or controls or anything like that so it's an easy life

However, chances are I've been staring at screens all day and if I do try to play something, I'll just zone out and wander aimlessly around looking at whatever the setting is and falling off stuff or presenting an easy target to a minor enemy. As I get older I seem to be gravitating toward smaller, shorter games though. Very similar here. It’s unusual for me to “complete” a game. I’m much more likely to get a certain amount of fun out of it and then move on, sometimes returning years later for another little pootle around. I started gaming in the eighties, though. Don’t think I’ve finished more than two or three Spectrum games either! |

Depends on the day. 2 hours a day on average. Almost always doing something cooperatively/socially.
I don't tend to get on before 9.30pm.
I also don't get enough sleep.

Obviously it depends on the amount of content in the game, but it more depends on my attention span. I could play something for an hour or two then never pick it up again, or in extreme cases, (Xenoblade X, AC Odyssey), I can reach the 200 hour mark, if the game fully sucks me in.
Generally, if it's a mid-sized or mid-long game, it takes me around 75 hours to complete. But it's rare these days that I get to the end credits.
I don't have any single game I return to time and time again though, like a Call of Duty, Destiny, Animal Crossing etc, so no crazy 1000 hour play time for anything.

An hour or 2 every few days or so, but looking at my ff14 /playtime it's sitting at just over 28 days, which is like 672 hours.
Been playing it for almost a year though, so that's probably not bad overall.
