Okay, actually just a single colleague in my case. A person on my team is pushing me towards a rampage.
They witter constantly: everything they say is followed by several sentences of blathering, increasingly annoying as they decrease in volume to a whisper, as if they are voicing their internal monologue.
If they see something they find interesting and want to bore you with their thoughts on it they will gasp audibly, inviting you to inquire. Obviously I usually ignore them, but this just leads to more theatrical noises and monitor finger-jabbing, until at last they ask 'have you seen this?' This kind of interruption occurs even if they know I am really busy with a deadline or something, headphones on etc.
If they try to tell you something it invariably gets bogged down in tedious and irrelevant detail. An unsolicited monologue about their lunch will begin with several minutes wondering out aloud whether it was at 12:30.or 1:00. Then another about whether their friend had jam on her scone or not. Then they'll again start to think about whether it actually was 1:00... and so on.
Being annoying is one thing, but this person is actually a bit shit as well. They are simultaneously unable to use their initiative where it counts, but then make arbitrary decisions about other things that can cause significant problems later on, even when given precise instructions. It should be said that this person is *highly* educated, on paper at least.
In an Excel spreadsheet for example they will choose to exclude '.xx' suffixes in a particular field, or change the title of a column on a whim because they don't think it matters. But they then agonize over which colour highlighting to use, or exact formatting for footnotes. This kind of silly business has today meant I've had to step in and micromanage something I really shouldn't have to.
They're kind of a journeyman, who's been in and out the office numerous times, given chance after chance and time and again has proven themselves mediocre at best. They're also desperate to not make mistakes, which means they work unpaid overtime to double-triple-check themselves, but amazingly they still manage to churn out crap. Our team took a punt on them after being told they'd improved. Fuck, only Lord Neilka knows how bad they must've been before.
They are a 'nice' person, really, which makes them more annoying in some ways as it highlights that my intolerance is not justified. More so because they're a bit timid, which, to their credit, they try hard to overcome. I feel some sympathy because they are so desperate and try so hard, and in doing so sometimes undermine themselves, which is somewhat tragic. But fucking hell, it makes things more difficult. I feel quite bad, but I will be glad when they move on
