I heartily recommend the Lenovo Legion 7 2021 edition with the AMD 5900HX CPU and Nvidia 3080 mobile GPU. It's not silent. But it's fast as fuck.

Anyone recommend a laptop? Mines 8 years old and appears to have finally died. Preferably around £800?
I saw that EG had an article up for precisely this, but looks like half of its for the US and the UK stuff is either out of stock or doesn't actually exist! 🙄

Costco have a good price on the LG Gram 17 right now. Good components and a long battery life and light as hell. Over your budget though (£1199).

Where is the best place to shop for laptops nowadays? I'm the market too for similar reasons, and I'm not even really sure which sites have the best deals anymore. Last time I got a laptop was straight from the manufacturer, and that was about six years ago.
Cheers all!

I've been mainly checking hotukdeals, though fuck knows which ones are actually decent laptops as the comments are usually shit.
I'm looking to save space by having a laptop hooked upto the TV for gaming but not sure if I'm better sticking with a PC

Cheers. I was looking on Currys, which seemed to have some decent prices, although I'm so out of it when it comes to PC hardware.
Since we had kids and the spare room became a bedroom I don't have space for a desktop PC, so my laptop kind of has to be a workhorse.

My only recommendation is not to buy a laptop with 8GB of unupgradeable RAM. That's all.
Don't make my mistake.

8GB isn't too bad if it's just for general browsing/office stuff. Anything more intensive than that and yeah, definitely make sure you can upgrade or just get the right amount from the start.

Mine started working again! Which is good as this is not going to be a year for buying stuff like that.

Anything more intensive than that and yeah, definitely make sure you can upgrade or just get the right amount from the start. 8GB is fine for office work, but with modern games you are definitely going to suffer. Then again, I must admit, my laptop isn't so powerful as to run modern games at anything more than 1080p and 30fps anyway, due to both the GPU and the CPU being somewhat weak. This is basically a laptop for Xbox One era games. There is enough RAM for those, and in that regard, it can run at 60fps almost everything the X1 could run at 30fps, unless the port is crap, or bottoms down at still higher settings than the Xbox One had. Still, yeah, not very future-proof. But I wanted a thin and light laptop, and now I pay the consequences of it.

There’s thin and light powerful laptops too. They’re not particularly cheap, but they’re there.
My ASUS Zephyrus 15 has a Ryzen 5900S and an RTX 3070 in it. Can blaze through anything at 1440p. Was something like $1600 on sale when I got it, so about double what Rich was asking. 👀
But it’s light, compact, portable and poweful.

Hah, mine is merely a Ryzen 5500U and GTX 1650, so it's a lot less powerful. But it was just 800 euro, so yeah, of course there would be compromises.
Still, I wouldn't have found anything else for that price and form factor (it's 14" and just 1.3Kg, with a 90W power brick), especially at that point in time. Build quality is also good and the screen is a nice looking IPS, which is more than I can say about most laptops in that price range. So it's not too bad overall. Reviews were very good overall. I just wish I had checked whether the RAM was upgradeable.
But even if I had... dunno, chances are I'd have taken it anyway. The 16GB model was not available and I needed the laptop somewhat urgently.

Since we had kids and the spare room became a bedroom I don't have space for a desktop PC, so my laptop kind of has to be a workhorse. This is what has happened to me. My gaming PC is stuck in my daughters bedroom so I only get to use it for maybe 2-3 hours over the weekend and that is if I am lucky. We're not really thinking about moving for another 2 years at least so my option now is to buy a gaming laptop. Something I said I'd never do again after my old Alienware M14x about 10 years ago but it seems a gaming laptop is the only way I can get some gaming in over the evening. Curious to see the new RTX4080 and RTX4090 laptop prices. Part of me thinks of selling my desktop but keeping my ultrawide monitor and my 3090 but getting one of those external enclosures so that I could still use my 3090 if I need a bit more oomph. Though if the 4090 mobile can do decent 4K it may solve all my issues - I'm sure I don't need both kidneys

Any chances of sneaking into the daughter's bedroom while she's out and yoinking the PC?
You can probably replace it with a cheapo prebuilt POS, chances are she can't tell the difference... right?

Ha, she's only 9 months so she's useless at games anyway! We've only got a 2bed and she wasn't exactly planned so she turned my home office into her bedroom, the little shit.
I get to use it on the weekends but on the weekdays by the time I get back from work I rather play around with her before her bedtime than sneak games in.
It's a decent excuse to buy something new and shiny. If the rumours are true that the 4090mobile is almost, if not faster, than a desktop 3090, I'll be happy to get that and probably just sell my desktop.

No under the stairs cupboard that could suffice as a gaming nook?

No under the stairs cupboard that could suffice as a gaming nook? Sadly not. Not big enough for my monitor anyway We're getting a shed built out in the garden which i'm going to turn into a pain cave. Was originally going to be building an outdoor office but we're not staying here forever so not really worth the investment.

Fair. I'm just waiting for when we cave and let my eldest have a TV in his room. I might get a chance to play on my ps5 in the living room then!

I've seen a few laptops around £1500 with 16gb RAM, i9 processors, RTX 3070s, and 1tb SSDs, and those specs all seem pretty good to me. Not sure if the laptops themselves are any good though, but that's the sort of thing I'm after.
What I'm not really a fan of, though, is the whole RGB, souped-up, edgy "gamer laptop" design that they all seem to have, but that might have to be my compromise to avoid spending over two grand.

Jeez these 4090 laptops are not cheat (shock) cheapest I've seen so far is £3800. Most expensive... £5300. This is going to be hard to swing past Mrs Buu

Just replace the Desktop on a break-even money strategy (so a 3080 maybe) with no money lost more portability but a slight dip in performance?

I guess the argument to not go full shiny is that I said I wouldn't spend over £3500. But I know what I'm like, if it's 'only' a little bit over that I'll probably stretch to it and use some creative story telling. Really it's the Asus Zephyrus duo I had my eye on and hoping they do a 4080/4090 version but seeing the cost of the 4090 machines out so far, it's going to be a moment requiring vast amounts of vaseline and ankle grabbing. Waiting to see the benchmarks. If it's true and the 4090 is close to a desktop 3090 it would make me more happy to get rid of my desktop as it would be more or less the same performance (I currently have a 3090) and would mean I could still use my monitor from time to time or even use the TV downstairs - that would be a treat. Seems like benchmarks aren't going out for a while though.

Buu there's a bench here, not sure how reliable this channel is, but there you have it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=F85UIvxQvD8&ab_channel=BenchmarkLabLooks like it's about 60-70% the speed of the desktop version, depending on the game. At a glance, I'd say it's more or less on par with the desktop 3090. Edit: scratch that, chances are it's just a desktop PC with its power limited to match the laptop models. Well, should be good to get an idea, assuming they find a way to dissipate all the heat efficiently and without throttling.

If it's more or less on a par with a 3090 then I'm likely going to bite the bullet and ask for forgiveness after.
I'm on the waiting list for the Razer Blade 16 as they haven't shown the cost yet but I expect it'll be out of my range. It's Zepheryus I really want but no word on price yet.

Arguably though, since a laptop won't ever have a screen bigger than 17", I don't think that reaching 4K is all that necessary? I'd reckon 1440p would be more than enough. Even a 4070 could be enough for that.
Then again, I have a 35W GTX 1650 in my 14" laptop and already have to play some games at 720p/900p60 or 1080p30, so maybe I'm just more accepting of jaggies and lower framerates.

For sure, you're right with regards to 4K and small screens. It's just that I still would like to be able to wire it up to the 65 OLED in the living room (something I could never be bothered to do with my desktop) and still use my AW3821DW occasionally.

Razed Blades are sleek, but amongst the most expensive available. You’ll probably be better served with an Asus or Lenovo. The latter’s designs are a bit less gamery than the former’s.

Yeah, I got the Lenovo Legion 7 year before last because - when you dial down the RGB - it just looks like a laptop.
That and it goes like hot shit off a shovel, obviously.
