When I used to work nextdoor to the AAIB, they had practically one of these a week, and they were all old giffers smashing their Cessnas into something because they got lost/landed in the wrong field/were Harrison Ford etc.
Almost like rich old men shouldn't be allowed to keep flying indefinitely.

I think in this instance and those like it, they mean permanently life changing… like wheelchair or bed bound, not just “boss, I can’t come to work this week”. Officially it can be quite minor. The example we were told that a broken wrist that meant it healed stiff and you couldn't race motorbikes due to the loss of motion is recorded as a life changing accident. Bikes are courses always hammer this one one. |

But honestly, we're quibbling over terms.
In addition to crashing a couple of motorbikes, I've jumped out of my fair share of aeroplanes, fortunately always with a parachute. I have strong reasons to think that doing so without one is unlikely - not impossible, but profoundly unlikely - to result in just a broken wrist.

The guy jumped out of a plane that was about to crash into a block of flats so it's safe to assume he didn't just bend his knees and roll on landing. Then again, the last plane that crashed near us was one of the Red Arrows and he stayed in and made sure it didn't kill anyone else.
