It's not really being reinstated is it? It's more like sending a guy to be his temporary replacement who just happens to be the same guy. It sounds like they still have to run to be reelected. (?) Basically, yeah. But the GOP have unwittingly handed any election over to Jones and Pearson due to their sheer fuckwittery. It's close enough to a reinstatement that you might as well use the word. |

Its the inherent problem with data governance. The confidential information you have has a purpose and at some point its going to end up in the orbit of a low level drone because anyone with any sense is too well paid to bother working on it.
Literally 90% of the data breaches in our place are from temps in call centers with access to customer personal and finance details.

You have to go through much stricter checks* (if you're of civilian background) to get actual security clearance - SC is easy enough for most people, but it wouldn't grant you unrestricted access to secret information. DV/DV+ etc (which are required for unrestricted, unsupervised access) are rarely give to low level drones and the process to get it is still pretty stringent, even for people with a service record or who've held it previously.
US security clearance seems like a shitshow.
*Or take Boris and whoever he's currently banging on a nice villa holiday.

Nah, I had SC and then DV clearance in my 20s to do fairly menial IT stuff in the nuclear industry. When I was 26 I set up an airgapped network that had trident warhead schematics on it and I was (and still am) an absolute dumbass.

Fair enough. May have changed since then, mind you. Mine was pretty easy (ex service n that), but I know people who've had day long interviews with FCO folks where they've been severely grilled. One even said "fuck this" and told the guy to get out.  |

Yeah, maybe, but in my long and storied career it has been my observation that at some point all data will cross the path of someone who shouldnt have access to it and *gestures at america* I cant imagine the US Army is any different.
Years ago I was approached by a recruiter for a job at GCHQ as a backup operator because it was an SC level post. I very much doubt data on the backups would have stopped at SC, though, and changing backup tapes is as low on the ladder as you can get.

GCHQ always makes me laugh, because people are like "oooh, super secret, don't even mention it", but it's signposted for miles around. I think they changed the DV process in about 2015 and a lot of the 3rd parties who used to be able to put you through got removed and only the FCO (and a couple of others) were able grant it, which is probably where the stories above come from. I remember rocking up to (a site) a few years back that's very strictly controlled (you wouldn't even get through the main gate with SC, even the post has to be left at the guard post), has private security armed guards and they were really aggressive and posturing, like "we've got security clearance and guns". Ooooh, you're 'ard! /end digress |

I used to do what ammounted to data entry for the MOD, nothing sensitive that I ever saw, but the servers I was working on probably had some shit. To think I could have impressed some kids with a list of IP addresses and my security clearance paperwork.
