Succession is miles ahead of anything else, ridiculously good. Is Succession a famous thing? Because before joining this forum I'd never heard of it or seen it mentioned anywhere. I am out of touch though. In the UK at least it's on Sky so hardly anyone can actually watch it except a certain chunk of the middle class (ironically one that doesn't map very well to the sort of people who would like it most, I suspect). Which means there's a hard core of people who think it's great, and then a massive lot of people (including me) who have no idea if it's actually any good. Especially as it wasn't even on NowTV for a while IIRC (or at least I sure couldn't seem to get it). Weirdly it seems like it's leaving Sky/Now on the 22nd of Feb so maybe it'll go to a more broadly-watched channel then. I'll put another Midnight Mass down myself as outright best. I loved the soliloquies fuck everyone who didn't. Haters. Contenders: Arcane was definitely good, at least 8/10, and had the best animated style I've seen for years, but I'm not sure why people are acting like it was mind-blowing or something. The plot/writing weren't particularly special (solid, workmanlike, rather than good), just the animation. It sure made me wish for a Dishonored series done in the exact same style though. For All Mankind S2 was amazing. Felt a lot better than S1 though that stuff with the main character's wife at the end was... weird... and not in a good way. But ending with Nirvana and the '90s yes. Reservation Dogs - This is absolutely great. My wife has relatives on the rez in Oklahoma so she particularly likes it (she says it is very accurate to the vibe and kind of humour round there) but's just a straight-up great show that I think most people would enjoy (if a tad depressing in certain episodes). Loki was fucking great I have no idea what's wrong with you loons that no-one has mentioned that. It was a hell of a lot better than Falcon or WandaVision. I understand there's some kind of secret Eurogamer pact to pretend to hate it or something but us RPS folks didn't blood-swear to Agatha or whatever. Hawkeye is really good so far though. Wheel of Time is burning up the charts, like, episode 1/2 I wouldn't even have thought about mentioning it, but episode 6, it's in contention. Given what is likely to happen in E7/8 it probably won't get there this season but maybe next. Shadow and Bone wasn't like, that great, but it was an amazing adaption of something very hard to adapt to the screen especially as they retroactively jammed in three characters from a later book and somehow made all that mostly work. Mostly. Not really up there but as someone who read all those books I really enjoyed it, especially how well it nailed a lot of the stuff from them (1-3 are a kinda meh Twilight with wizards sort of deal, which the show managed to avert by bringing in characters from the amazing books 4-5, which are just a wildly superior fantasy heist deal - hopefully the show keeps going until then! Probably make it by S3). Mythic Quest - talking of shows nobody has seen, this is great. Like, way better than a show which heavily uses Ubisoft games for the pretend-games it's about has any right to be. Invincible was pretty good, but I thought The Boys S2 was a little better. I was impressed how Invincible managed to turn it around from pure cheese to hyperviolence to actually a good show though. But man I was very confused by the pink girl superhero seemingly being called "Adam Eve" and having what appeared to be a female symbol with an X over it for a few episodes until I looked it up. Apparently her name is A tom Eve, and that's a shorthand used in the animation, it's actually supposed to be a female symbol with protons or neutrons or w/e orbiting it, not an X on it. That just made so much more sense, but it certainly wasn't clear in the first few episodes (if ever - only by looking at a comic-book panel could I see what it actually was). And a big thumbs down to: Ozark S3 - UGH. I thought this show was maybe getting it together (really there's one great actress on it who is 90% of why it was worth watching), but no, we just had have one ridiculous annoying bit of bullshit after another. It was like watching a bad season of House or something. Way to really hard-demonstrate Ozark is no Breaking Bad.

I can see why you might
I don't watch much TV, certainly nothing recent, but if Midnight Mass is considered a stand out by so many people, I don't think I'm missing much

I kind of agree with this. A lot of good shows have been mentioned but none really jump out at me like ‘The Wire’ or ‘Forbrydelsen’. No true classics this year. Midnight Mass was ok, I thought it devolved into a bit of a schlock towards the end. For all mankind carried on being good. Invincible was actually refreshing. Kudos for being different. As a cultural study I find S2 of Michael McIntyres ‘The Wheel’ worthy of observation. What a unique game show. Never have I seen such a collection of plebs be given the opportunity to gain life changing amounts of money based on the stupidity of C list celebrities. And the random nature of it. Fascinating. /spockeyebrow

Seriously?! Mandalorian Season 2 was 2020? Time is taking the piss these days. Not that I was going to vote for that anyway... I guess since I started the thread I should post something though. So, shortlist: The Owl House - Season 2 Season one took a while to grow on me, but season 2, the first half at least, was just non stop big developments. One of those shows that got cut in half though, so have to hope the second half will keep up the quality.
Euphoria (2019)
So this apparently came out in 2019, but I only saw it this year and it's amazing. Excessively sexualized drug-addled teens and some awesome camerawork.
The Nevers If you like Joss Whedon stuff, and I very do, this is perfect. Buffy/Firefly meets Victorian X-men. Love the 2 main characters. Woke AF. Excellent ending. Another cut-in-half show that I don't know when we'll get part 2.
If you don't like Whedoneqsue stuff you'll hate it.
Resident Alien Starships were meant to fly Hands up and touch the sky Can't stop 'cause we're so high Let's do this one more time! Alan Tudyk as a drunk alien dancing to Niki Minaj. Nuff said.
Harley Quinn (Seasons 1 & 2 - 2019-2020)
Another one that apparently came out earlier, but I only caught this year. I thought I would hate this, as I usually hate modern animations that try to be all adult. But it's just super fun and the main characters are all great. Who'd have thought Penny would make a great Harley.
Hawkeye
So far, this is shaping up really fun. Mainly the 2 main characters. Mainly Kate.
Sweet / Vicious (2016-2017)
So this came out ages ago, but no one heard of it so it doesn't count. Guilty pleasure, as it's probably not actually all that good. But it's just such a batshit mix of action vigilante heroes, comedy banter, and sexual assault. No idea how it got greenlit.
---
I think I'll go with The Nevers as the one from this year, though I'm also really looking forward to the new seasons of Euphoria and Harley Quinn. If Euphoria was this year, I think it might edge it.

I just want to echo this. Generally speaking, I bounce off "adult" animation very, very hard. I generally find it very try-hard and oh-so-edgy, like it's enough to have a cartoon with violence and swearing. I know there are gems - I've not seen Bojack Horseman, and what little I've seen of Rick & Morty has been a lot better than the fanbase would suggest - but normally I find it sub-Robot Chicken, let alone sub-Family Guy. But Harley just rules. I think it's a combination of the DC jokes really landing, rather than just being "that character you liked as a child but now they swear". I think Harley is probably a perfect character to transfer to this sort of medium, as she's flexible enough to be a hero and also a murderer. But really it's just very funny as well as being a great character piece, with some good superhero storytelling and a rather sweet, subtle romance playing out underneath. Can't wait for season 3.

Attack on Titan season 4 part 1
Considering season the first part of season 3 threatened to bore everyone to death, the second half did really well to turn the corner and get me back into it. Although I did wonder how long it could keep going before the law of diminishing returns kicked in.
Then season 4 came along and turned the whole series on its head - it’s a breath of fresh air that the series needed and without a doubt one of the best series of anything in the last year. Final episodes start in January and it’s definitely my most anticipated show of 2022.

Succession by a mile.
Then Squid Game, then a big pile of stuff that was decent but I’ll probably never consider rewatching and I can’t think of.

Succession was superb and just gets better
Mare of Easttown was an absolute joy that I really looked forward to each week. It didn’t quite nail the ending for me, but still.
Dopesick is superb about the sins of the pharmaceutical industry in relation to OxyContin- it’s absolutely fucking unbelievable how these people behaved…

Gamesmaster
It was perfect. I was sold at the first "Let's get sweaty". Though Rab Florence back on TV was amazing, Trevor McDonald's put downs, Little Lad Larry, call out for "Thatcher's Techbase" in the section explaining a mod, "I never leave Scotland without me massive hammer".
Also Succession, Taskmaster and Loki were all good. But not Rab Florence with a sledge hammer good.
I don't remember if The Great was on C4 in January or December so might be 2020 but that was also brilliant. Shame the second series seems to be in obscure streaming service hell.

I thought Industry was one of the most original TV shows I've seen in years - in particular episode 4 following Harper's efforts to cover up a stomach-dropping mistake was incredibly close to the bone. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/m000pb89/industry

It’s Succession by a huge margin. No arguments.

Some cracking TV last year, and HBO had the pick of the bunch for me.
Succession: not quite up to the standard of season 2, but still sublime Mare of Easttown: Totally hooked on this from the first episode - Kate Winslet on top form Curb your Enthusiasm: Probably too many celebrity cameos and not enough of the old guard (Jeff, Suzie, Cheryl, Richard) but still a joy.

It hasn't ended and I've only watched 3 episodes, but surely Succession. Again. Having now watched them all, it's definitely this. Again.

I might get stick for this, but I really enjoyed Cobra Kai season 4. It's stupid and cheesy but that's its greatest strength and it shows a perfect understanding of the characters and themes of the original films, whilst being smart enough and self aware enough to acknowledge all the memes and discussions and so on that have developed since 1982. Great nostalgic value.

I really enjoyed Cobra Kai as well. Sat down to watch an episode, and much like the earlier seasons, I mainlined it in one go.

OddTaxi.
13eps of probably the best original anime for years. Not a scrap of wasted script, a tightly plotted scheme involving over a dozen characters, and sticks the landing where so many have failed. Shades of Tarantino and noir throughout.
And yes, the MC is a walrus taxi driver.

Where is this Harley Quinn show watchable? Any streaming? Seems to be not many places in the uk, unless you buy it. www.justwatch.com/uk/tv-series/harley-quinnPS/ Bit worried that the guardian review of Euphoria Season 2 says it ramps up the violence to uncomfortable levels, as it was already pretty uncomfortable in season 1. I could have done with less of that part.
