Hello friends,
Been reading this forum for a little while but hadn't made any posts til today. So -
After reading about the closing and then backtracking on the Vita/PS3 stores earlier this year (and listening to the excellent Back Page podcast ep on it), I've become curious about getting a Vita. I never had one back in the day, and the general view seems to be that it was highly undersupported/actively killed by Sony.
My main interest is whether it'd be worth picking one up to try out the titles available. Sounds like it was a good platform for Indies too, but nowadays the Switch probably does that better (though I don't currently have one of those either).
Looks like they're around the £100 mark on eBay, I reckon + a decent sized official memory card and games it'd be around £200 mark, so about 2/3 of entry price for a Switch OLED.
So yeah, anyone have any strong thoughts/reviews/opinions on the Vita?

I liked mine... Never really loved it. It was great for stuff like Dangonranpa and Persona. Not sure I'd spend that kind of money on one now, though.
Did a bit of mucking about on mine and got Retroarch running, which will be great for any upcoming commutes.

My main problem with the Vita is that it's so uncomfortable to hold for longer than 20 minutes

It was good 10 years ago. The screen is bad by todays standards. There’s one or two decent exclusives, it’s best use now is as a ps1 emulator

I thought the Vita could have been great with a bit more support. Using it as a remote screen for Ps4 was really impressive at the time and it was good for indies. But it was pretty heavy as far as I recall. Much prefer my Switch.

Persona 4 Golden made it a worthwhile purchase. To be honest Persona isn’t my normal cup of tea, never played another before or since, but became seriously invested in it
A rare example of a 10 out of 10

I loved my vita at the time but I don't honestly think it's worth picking up one tbh.

A modded one is great. Vita, psp, ps1 have more fantastic games to list really. Add emulators to the mix and it plays most older systems pretty flawlessly. Still use mine quite often. Finished the original max payne on it very recently actually.

I still love my Vita, but I wouldn't bother getting one now as the store is basically fucked and never has decent sales, so games aren't easy or cheap to get and support will only get worse - I've bought and deleted games or DLC which are no longer available in the store, so I can never play them.
Better off with a Switch.

If you want something to play P4G on, it's probably worth setting the money aside for a Steam Deck too.
If you can find an absolute bargain then yeah, but £200 is just silly money for a decade old console.

I loved my vita, had some great fun with P4G, tearaway, guacamelee and miami hotline on it, but traded it in and I don't miss it too much.
I get the odd 'should've kept that' pang, but not very often.
Loved that little OLED screen and it was good for remote playing some PS4 games (button requirements dependent whilst the missus watched telly.

Throwing into the mix, it's been mentioned about sticking RetroArch onto the Vita which is a good call, but there is also that very naughty app that lets you "sample" any game that exists on PSN. So you could try before you buy (lol) any game you want. As long as you hack the Vita of course.

I love my Vita, have two of them, an OLED and the 'Lite' or whatever it's called.
There are some great games, P4G obvs, but also Dragon's Crown, Odin Sphere, Muramasa. I played Cold Steel 1&2 on mine, before finishing the series on Switch.
They're pretty pricey these days though, and the prices of the shite proprietary memory cards are obscene. Also the physical games can be very expensive.
So, nice to have but probably not worth the cost unless there's something you absolutely must play on one

Did a bit of mucking about on mine and got Retroarch running, which will be great for any upcoming commutes. That was the most fun thing I did with mine. Never touched it again.... I'm doing that to my WiiU next. Will be able to put it away for ever.

I loved the Vita when it was current and there are still some very good games stuck on it (such a shame about Freedom Wars), but if you aren’t a Japanese speaker I don’t think you’d get too much from one now, especially not at the high prices being asked for second hand models.

Slap on CFW, use nopaystation to actually get to the store (I think it’s fair to call it abandonware seeing as it’s nigh on impossible to actually buy any of it nowadays), go hog wild with emulation and you’ll have a pretty good time of it.
I did use the Vita a lot more back in the glory days of PS4 remote play. The mobile apps just never seemed to work as well as the Vita ever did. A shame it doesn’t support the PS5 still.

I actually think the correct answer to this is "get a Steam Deck". I love the Vita BTW and I still have a bunch of games to go through on it. I even just bought a replacement battery for it, I wonder how well that's going to work. But its time is definitely past and the tablet/console hybrids (obvs the Switch right now and the SD soonish) have proven to be the superior solution to portable play.
Edit: oh yeah, remote play. I so miss it ever since I dumped the PS4 for the 5.

It was great at the time as a portable platform for indie games. And it was a shame Sony abandoned first party support for it as early as they did.
But yeah, I can’t really see any reason to get into one now when you can pick up a Switch, which took a lot of the lessons learned from the Vita and ran with it.

If you can be patient and want a good spec steam deck replacement, I hear some very high specced handhelds are coming next year with latest snap dragon tech. If emulation is your bag then these should cover just about everything you would want.

If you had PS+ and you added all those Vita games, could be worth a purchase. If you can still download them!

As far as its original library is concerned, it's great if you love PS2-level JRPGs and visual novels, but not if you like anything else.
The PS1 and somewhat limited PSP Classics you can buy digitally are great too.
Holding the device in the hand is nice too. I've only had experience with the original OLED version, but the thickness, the screen, the button layout, it all feels great.
The biggest issues with the Vita are a) Sony abandoned it very early on, so the promise of a portable to play those AAA games on the go never materialized, and b) Sony made some boneheaded hardware choices when developing it. Most notably, the memory cards. They used some proprietary memory sticks which were not only small in storage space and expensive, but they were also very prone to failure, so one day you might be making good progress in Persona 4 Golden, as an example, and the next day it might be corrupted, forcing you to start over again. Or worse yet is when you have games installed on the card, and they just don't boot because the card was corrupted. Also the wi-fi and PS Store are both painfully slow, and the download list is cumbersome to navigate which makes downloading the specific game or DLC you're looking for a chore.
Get a PSP or a Switch instead, IMO.

Switch really did just about everything the Vita was going for better, honestly. About the only area where the Switch does worse is in the d-pad, but that's due to its nature as a multiplayer-on-the-go portable that doubles as a TV console device.
PSP also kind of accomplished what Sony was going for better the first time around, but obviously the tech is incredibly outdated today.

The only games I remember playing on the Vita were P4G, Project Diva and Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together. Most of the 'big' titles were poor versions of proper console games. I imagine most indie games can be found elsewhere. Other than that, it's just the weirdo Japanese stuff
