I would be raging too - but the ire should be on the law. And if it's applied differently in other parts of the pitch, that's equally terrible.

A screen grab won't really do it, it doesn't show that he had completely lost control of the ball and the hand bought it back into control.

" a cup competition that we stood a decent chance of doing well in" but couldn't beat a "really, really poor " Championship team at home. Ok. Well quite, enjoy your moment but you know last night was a complete and utter freak of a result.

This one His arm is out there for balance, there's not much he can do imo. Similarly, I get annoyed when a defender is penalised for handball when their arms are raised when jumping. No consistency in that application at all.

This happened to us literally a couple of weeks ago and there was next to zero controversy because everyone seemed to be completely au fait with the rule change.

It could happen to Liverpool and I would still think it's bullshit.

Well quite, enjoy your moment but you know last night was a complete and utter freak of a result. You are right but you have an embarrassment of riches in your team and if I was a fan I'd be exactly that. Embarrassed. I'm not overly fussed tbh. We really don't need a cup run. Ant the new law is also shite.

I'm not on board with blaming the law because it's not applied that way anywhere else on the pitch. I don't believe it was changed to account for the situation yesterday either and rather that Harry Kane one last year which was him happening to touch the ball as he fell about 5 passes before the goal. Not a clear, obvious handball leading directly to a goal. Absolute nonsense.
It's just an incredibly stupid wording for PGMOL to hide behind and continue to claim "98% of all decisions were correct" as they do every season.

But that's the point - the law does appear to be applied differently in these circumstances. It shouldn't, of course, and I agree that anywhere else on the pitch, that gets pulled up. But for some reason, it doesn't in these circumstances (guess the question is should similar elsewhere also be let go but aren't?). Much like offside, the handball laws are just daft and made by people who have never played the game.

Was it bullshit? Absolutely.
Does it excuse Man Utd failing to beat a Championship team at home, over 120 minutes, while missing a penalty and at least 2 sitters? Absolutely not.
Is it hilarious? Yes, yes it is.

But even the classification of "accidental" is horseshit. He controls the ball by his hand. It's not directly contravening that law if that is pulled up as handball because that specifically convers a vague sense of "accidental".
I'm not buying that as a correct application.

If it hits a legal body part first and then quickly bounces off the arm/hand that is always deemed accidental. Never seen it not interpreted that way.

Yes, yes it is. I agree we should have been out of sight. Bruno should have had 2, Ronaldo 2 and Rashford 2 or 3. It was completely bizarre, particularly the penalty and open goal (lol) miss.

Anyway I'm still very annoyed about the whole thing and I'll never accept that that's a correct application of handball in any circumstance. I look forward to them not allowing any further such instances from now to the end of the season and the inevitable rewrite of that law in the summer.
Clearly it's nonsense, everyone with eyes knows it's nonsense. It should never be a goal ever.

It’s one of those where by the letter of the law, you can argue it’s not handball, but your eyes and common sense tell you it has to be handball. But referees are not given that level of discretion. Every decision is scrutinised to the nth degree so we have laws that try to cover every possible situation arising on the pitch. I’m probably as guilty as anyone when it comes to moaning about referees. I’m sure we all do it. I guess we either lessen the rules and give the referees ability to make their own judgement (while accepting the inconsistencies that will inevitably follow), or try to make rules that cover every single situation on a football pitch, which will lead to situations like last night. Having said all that, I would totally be pissed off if I were a Utd fan. Thankfully, I’m not

Guess its consistency of application across the season which confuses us all.

Would it not be easier to say handball is only for those times where it is quite clearly deliberate handball?
Goal line blocks, keepers handling outside area, etc?

Absolutely not. Last year's interpretation was preferable to the current for me. If we still had the old forum that would be verifiable by comments I made last year when everyone else was moaning.

The screen grab is bullshit. Everybody watching the game said it was handball straight away in real time. It was so obvious, he had lost control of the ball and only managed to set up the goal because his hand brought it back under control.
I’m not having the Spurs one was the same
It’s United we get it we are hated, but the decision is bullshit

It was total fucking nonsense but so much of football is these days it's hard to get too wound up about it outside the deep sense of apathy I have.

Even going off this years interpretation it’s still handball anywhere on the pitch. You can’t try and control a ball, lose control and then bring it back under control with your hand outstretched away from your body. I’m absolutely astonished that there are People in here defending the decision. Just watch it in real time when the actual goal was scored, not the replays or screen grabs.

We were never going to 'do well' in the FA cup lol. Should have already been out against Villa.
And we were poor too. To not even test their keeper (who looked very shit) was criminal.

I didn’t like last year’s “if it hits you you’re done no matter what” version because it didn’t reflect how the game is played. Same as my beef with the one pube over the line robotic version of offside, you need some flexibility to let the game be played.
But when its a decision like last night’s that’s handball all day, even if its an accident (forgive me Boro) without that contact the move is over and the goal isn’t scored. That’s the line for me in a situation like this, that handball is the difference between the passage of play ending and the ball going out of play and the cross and goal happening. If its a significant influence on the progress of the match you’ve got to pull it regardless of intent.

The choice is giving the ref’s permission to use their judgment, and living with inconsistency.
Or having consistency through absolute rules, and living with them sometimes not being in the spirit of the game.
But pundits (and therefore fans) will forever moan about inconsistency when they fall foul of it, then moan about the absolute rules that are brought in to fix the inconsistency.

We can whine all we want but if we'd played better and taken one of our multiple chances, it wouldn't have mattered.
United were decent in the first half, but abject in the second and extra time. This team really does need major help.

Pretty amazing! I'm mostly a rugby fan but Kiddy at home at Aggborough is the only football I've ever been to, back when I was a wee nipper. They advertised the local chip shop Captain Cod's on the hoardings.
