I would have said Returnal, which is just brilliant and my personal GotY for 2021, but a lot of people are waxing lyrical about it so I'm going pick something different for this thread.
Seeing rawshark's post further up the page mentioning Astro's Playroom had me nodding with approval. It really was a superb, warm-hearted, clever and unexpectedly delightful nostalgia trip through PlayStation history. A wonderful introduction to the PS5 console and its new features, in particular the fancy capabilities of the new haptic-enabled Dualsense controller. I found myself visiting that history of PlayStation room, akin to a comprehensive museum of the brand, quite a bit and lost count of the number of times I got Astro to jump on the PS1 console power switch to hear that iconic and utterly magical PS1 startup sound.
Honorable mentions to The Last of Us Part II which really affected me at times and had me thinking about many aspects of it long after I'd completed it. Control which was weird and bizarre, in a good way, and which had some excellent destructive and chaotic combat. Finally the game I'm currently playing, Jedi: Fallen Order, which is hands down the best Star Wars game I've played since KotOR 1&2!

Just got my Nintendo report for the year, so can see what I actually played. Looks like I mostly played Xenoblade Chronicles (the remaster from the Wii), the Outer Worlds and Final Fantasy XII.
Of those, I couldn't stand FF12 which was a real getting fest and I can't remember Xenoblade Chronicles at all, so it can't have been all that. The Outer Worlds reminded me of Serenity / Firefly from the outset and I loved it. I played it through twice and did everything I could each play through. Really enjoyed exploring and sniping anything that moved.

Every 5 minutes hearing DUNBAN. Was enough for me to bin Xenoblade. I did enjoy the 30 odd hours I played but it started to grate on me.

Has to be Deathloop for me, simply because it gave me my favourite gaming moment of the year. I was attempting my first 'perfect loop' and got invaded by someone on the final map. We had an incredibly tense 15 minute sniper battle that ended when I managed to sneak up on them and kick them into the sea. Beating the game after that felt absolutely stellar.

Only thing keeping me from diving in (besides time) is I would’ve liked to play with mouse and keyboard but my PC ain’t too beefy. I could get it on PS but fps and controllers:|

This year, I've had the most fun with Resident Evil Village, Control and Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut.
However, I've just started Psychonauts 2 and It Takes Two and I can already tell I'm going to love them both.
