Anyways, if it's Dragonfall then it's because it's a really nicely written RPG that's just nice and focused enough and avoids the issue of being too big for its own good. The combat can get a bit samey in some of the long crawls, but I mainly like the characters, writing and vibe. Have you already played Hongkong? Would be interesting to see which one you like better. They are both very close in my opinion, but I slightly prefer how the story unfolds in Dragonfall.

Ehhh I'm going to have to go with Outer Wilds. It was mind-bogglingly clever, atmospheric and had a bit of an emotional kick as well.
Think the only games I played much that actually came out this year were Forza Horizon 5 and Psychonauts 2. Both very good but not GOTY stuff.

I don't think I've played a PC game this year. So it'll have to be console. Was going to say Demon's souls on the ps5, but I'm thoroughly enjoying yet another run through of Botw. Nothing seems to captivate me as much as that game. Possible exception of the snes version of Super Metroid comes very close though.

I appreciated The Shrouded Isle much more after I finished it - it seemed to stick in my mind for a bit.
The big hitters were:
Remnant: From the Ashes - I had an absolute whale of a time with this. I might still buy it on Steam and get some of the achievements that were missing on the Epic version I played.
Solasta: Crown of the Magister - this actually came out this year so it might be my game of the year, I dunno. First foray into D&D and it was pretty accessible, which is important for a noob.
Ashen was also great - I really enjoyed the Soulsiness without the associated pain (apart from that final boss arrrggh!) But I'm gonna go with Suzerain - an absolutely brilliant mix of visual novel and political game. As far as I could tell, the politics were nuanced and note-perfect. You kinda get the feeling that the devs want you to go full lefty, but I got my favourite achievement in this game:
Still a bit sore about how things worked out.

Is WRC 10 worth the upgrade from 9? I'd say yes, but not at full price. The new tracks are all brilliant, and the historic mode is fairly good too. The handling has been improved, I also heard it was very similar to 9 before I bought it, but I think that's underselling the tweaks they've done to the handling mechanics (on controller at least, not tried a wheel). I've played a lot of rally games recently and it's probably my favourite one at the moment. Around half of the tracks are from 9, and the career mode is pretty much identical to 9 other than the option to create your own livery. I play in first person mode so don't even really get to see the car so it's not a big feature imo, but others seem to like it.

Subnautica for me. Superb game. Also played Below Zero which is technically much better but doesn't quite have the same magic.
Beyond that, I'd say Race Room Racing Experience after their summer patch. Of the current sims, it's the weakest graphically but the most engaging to drive overall. Just amazing force feedback and sound and the online ranked multiplayer is actually competitive but fair.

Metroid Dread hands down. Not only is it decent but I’ve sat everything else out due to next gen prices
Also replayed FFVI which of course would win almost any contest but I accept it’s a bit of a tosspot answer to this

Dragonfall is the only one I've tried. I've heard HK is great, but it sounds like it also scales things up a bit, and i'm unsure whether that'll be an improvement or not. I've also gotta say that I'm kinda over Hong Kong and Tokyo style cyberpunk cities, as they've been done to death. Ooohh neon kanji and ramen stalls!! So you watched Blade Runner too?! Being set in Berlin was a nice change from that.

I've feel like I've found myself regressing this year into comfort gaming. A somewhat odd concept, since all gaming should really fall under some kind of comfort, but essentially I've spent most of my gaming time replaying games.
I'm not sure how I managed it, because between work, looking after a three year old, and a plethora of other hobbies, I managed a complete playthrough of Persona 5 Royal (PS4, sorry!), a run and a half of Persona 4 Golden and most of a complete character run through Baldur's Gate, Siege of Dragonspear, BG2, and am working my way through Throne of Bhaal. I've replayed Outer Wilds and No One Lives Forever, and spent what felt like forever in Assassin's Creed Odyssey. I also spent a chunk of time with a bunch of old Point and Click games. I think I've now realise why I feel so tired.
Probably my favourite new experience this year was playing Alba. A tiny game I finished in one sitting, it was exactly the kind of charming I needed, sandwiched as it has been between the slices of mundane misery-bread of Covid & Brexit related impacts. It's a lovely game about a small community, nature, and taking pictures. More photography games, please!

Definitely still Rainbow Six Siege. Has loads of depth and is a bunch of fun.

Hmm... Not sure. Probably either Hitman 3 or Psychonauts 2. Both were excellent entries in their respective series. Psychonauts was probably more perfect for the time it lasted, but Hitman is one I will be returning to regularly.
I very much enjoyed Demon Souls, so very high on my list. A remake, but I had only played about half of the original version before via emulation, so basically new to me.
I also did really like Returnal, for the most part. Biome 3 pissed me off greatly though. The constant need to grind through the first area in order to have enough upgrades to be able to fight in the third area, only to die and have to do it all over again was monumentally frustrating and probably took up likely 25-35% of my time to the game.
Age of Empires 4 has been a nice reminder of how good classic RTS games are and seeing it in modern, high budget, package is lovely.

Astrobot - partly because it meant I had finally gotten my hands on a PS5, but also because I’ve never played anything with such a goofy smile in my face the whole way through.

Dyson Sphere Project.
Very good construction game with interesting interstellar logistics. For an early access game it was surprisingly loaded with features, performed great with minimal bugs.
Highly recommend this game to anyone with a decent enough hardware to run it.

I’m going to count them together and say Marvel’s Spiderman/Miles Morales. I’m not a huge triple A player and largely can’t be arsed with the textbook triple A open world and these are both but also just fun. Properly fun and enjoyable.

The best game I’ve played this year is Dark Souls, same as last year The best game I’ve played this year is Dark Souls, for the first time ever! Turned me onto a whole new genre of games.

At DeS currently, excited to get to DS3 which seems like a favourite for many. I even turned evangelist and gifted DS to a friend because I was so excited to hear his take on it. He’s entering Anor Londo now- so a great success I’d say. Just hope he’ll get on with the archers.

Condemned Criminal Origins is definitely one of my favourites I’ve played this year. Can’t believe I missed it the first time around. Also enjoyed a lot of X Files Resist and Serve. A bit janky but very fun.

Sometimes i think the easiest way to do it is with a big shield and combustion or great combustion- that’s does work every time You should try Bloodborne too if you’ve not already, it’s an amazing game. Sekiro is great too but it’s not fun like Souls, it’s a proper trial

Sekiro is great too but it’s not fun like Souls, it’s a proper trial Oh, I’ve done it - twice! First time around I activated the bonfire right after but forgot to *rest*. That’s how I learned that specific mechanic. Ended up using a heavy shield- rolling past the arrow mr right shoots at you when you get to the top, then bashed him off the ledge. Not elegant at all but worked in the end 🤓 I’m sure I’d try parry next playthrough, I got a lot of practice on the run up to last boss! I played BB right after DS, I was just “checking it out” because it was in the ps classics collection you get access to on PS5 and got sucked right in. I think moving on to DS2 right after BBs combat was part of why that game never clicked proper for me. I was warned this could happen playing the games in that order but BB was just so good I couldn’t put it down.

I replayed all six Soulsborne games this year, so those would occupy my top slots (as they would every year, to be fair). Otherwise, I'll have to be boring and say Returnal, closely followed by Hades.

Apex Legends, because I like shooting children and teenagers on the internet. Might be old, but I've still got the moves.
Control, because SCP is a fantastic thing to pillage for your game world.
Dishonored 2, because it reminds me of Thief- also, this year I didn't bounce off it.

I'm getting really sucked into Judgment at the moment, so it might be the one for me. I had the PS4 version when it released a couple of years back, but got distracted by other releases. Playing the next gen update and am loving it.

Playing the next gen update and am loving it. Never heard of this because I don't have a console, but a quick google had me thinking 'that looks like Kimutaku', and a quick wikipedia search later shows that it *is* Kimutaku. Given that i hate him with a passion, and he has an immensely puncheable face, I can't decide if this game would annoy me or be cathartic. Maybe I could just walk him into fights and let him get the crap beaten out of him? But I imagine I'd also have to listen to his annoying voice and attempts at 'acting'. *conflicted*

Frostpunk
Had the game in my library for a good year or so. Always wanted to get into it but it came across as a pretty stressful game which I didn’t want to get into. Then I read an article from the developer about it and it intrigued me enough to give it a pop. 30hours later and I am still hooked. A real time sinker. One of those ‘I’ll just do this then that then head off to bed’ then you find it’s 1.30am and you’ve got work in the morning! Absolutely love it. Even though it came out in 2018, I’d say it’s my game of the year

I’m going to have to say Cyberpunk. Fashionable to hate on it, of course, but I had a blast with it. It looks great, the characters and acting are fantastic, and I had loads of fun with all the different hacking powers. Using Cyberpsychosis on someone from outside the area and watching the fun never gets old.
I experienced a game-breaking bug exactly once, and minor ones a handful of times. Nowhere near enough to spoil my enjoyment.
My sole complaint is that I finished it by accident - they let you attempt the final mission really early on, and although it warned me, I thought I was moving between Acts of the game rather than doing the end part. However, It then plonks you back at the point before you accept the final mission, and I was able to go off and experience the other two-thirds of the game (including all of the best stuff).
