Hey, so some folk struggle with buying the right gift and maybe need the input of a third party. I know I do.
Here's my quandary. My ex wife always used to harp on about how a metal detector would be a fun thing. I never took the hint and for one reason or another I ended up divorced. A few year after that she was with a new man who turned out to be a violent control freak. While I was staying with her in the aftermath I discovered a "My first Metal Detector" kit in the shed. Never confirmed it but I believe the wife beater bought this.
Fast forward half a decade and the current Ms Trafford has expressed a passing interest in Detectoring. Obviously my ears prick up at the mention of this... We've only been dating 3 months, it seems like an odd gift, save it for later. Should I just blank the notion forever. Or do I perhaps change my time/destiny contimum and buy a goddamn metal detector for her at the risk of whatever might happen...

So what is your concern here? Are you concerned that if you don't buy her it she'll leave, but if you do buy her one then you're a wife beater?

Buy her a boxset of The Detectorists & a detector rig up.
Let sexy times ensue.

Can't you just ask the passengers on your bus as you let them on or off? Don't let them on until they give a considered answer. Or don't let them off until they give you a considered answer?

I'd be more worried about what personality trait you have that drives these women to want to spend time alone in a field wearing headphones.

I think it's more the coincidence Rob. Maybe I should just go for it based on your reply. I'm shit at buying gifts see.

If you do decide to get one, I'd recommend a Garrett Ace. Prices start at £150 which is quite a lot of money which is why I've got all the research done but don't have a metal detector.

See if the ex still has the nutter's gift in the shed and kindly offer to take it off her hands.

Buy her something else for Christmas (perfume, jewellery etc) then offer to take the old one off your ex later on, so you can demonstrate you're supporting her hobby. But I think giving her a metal detector for Christmas after 3 months would be weird - you know her a bit more though, so...

I just read the 3 months bit and agree with Dougs, a metal detector isn't a present for 3 months unless she's really been going on about it, which doesn't sound like what you're saying.

So the ex always harped on about metal detectoring and you completely ignored her, but the new one made a casual passing comment about it in the middle of sips of coffee one unspecific day and your immediate thought was to buy her a metal detector?
I think you just might not be good at this traff

Was her ex an archaeologist? Maybe she knows where there's a stash of old coins?

Don't purchase a metal detector, but rent them from CEX/HSS/whatevs and go on a metal detectoring date with a hamper of picnic treats.
Then at an opportune moment, you may ask if she's been able to detect bofa.

I finished my Chrimbo shopping this morning, so I'm officially done. Mrs Hermit is getting a couple of Beryl Cook prints, a couple of Beryl Cook jigsaws, some mint hand cream from the white company that she likes, along with the matching handwash and room spray, 3kg of Swizzels chews (excellent present for a diabetic I thought) and a cheeky qtr of some decent bud so she can smoke that instead of the shake we normally get.

My wife thoughtfully told me a list of stuff she wanted. Told me, just get these things, nothing else. Unfortunately I can't remember any of it.
Pink ladies metal detector sounds good though.

Can’t you just buy her some metal so she doesn’t need to do the detectoring in the first place?

Yeah, I'm with retro74. Seems like perfect timing to buy an engagement ring.

I'm available for hire if you want to impress your female companions. We'll all meet in public and I'll say this:
"Hey, Woman. Hey, Woman! Listen here. Since your old man ain't got no heart, maybe you like to see a real man. I bet you stay up late every night dreamin' you had a real man, don't ya? I'll tell you what. Bring your pretty little self over to my apartment tonight, and I'll show you a real man."
Then we have a boxing match.
