So thinking of getting Mrs Mercury a printer for Christmas, pretty boring but there you go, we used to have a cheapy HP cartridge printer but it was pretty crap (and has died now anyway). She might do one print this month, then 50 next month then nothing for two months or whatever, same for the kids so pretty varied though I know if she didn't have a guilt trip every time she used it she would use it more. ATM if anyone want's any printing then Muggins has to do it on QT at work and frankly I would get nagged less and we all want that right!
So have been thinking of a laser printer because my understanding is that such printers can go a month or two without needing to print anything and do not clog up (is that right?). They're obviously more expensive to buy but I understand they should be cheaper in the long run. So have been thinking about something like this - www.amazon.co.uk/Epson-EcoTank-4700-Print-Printer/dp/B07L9G7ZRS/ref=psdc_430586031_t4_B07PZZ2Y5Q?th=1 perhaps a bit pricey but the ink for the HP cost a blooming fortune so I guess it will even out over the years. Any thoughts or recommendations please?

I've got the Epson ET-2720 and its great. My kids have printed pages and pages since I bought it and I've had to buy one bottle of ink since. I also had an HP 5510 printer which finally died and cost me a fortune in printer ink.
Downside of the Epson Eco Tanks is that if you leave them for ages, then you'll probably need to do a quick (2-3 minutes) head clean when you next use it. But upside is that my kids have put well over 1000 sheets through the thing and I've used a bottle of black that cost me ~£3 to replace (bought with all the other inks (which are 1/4 used) for £12). Plays better with my wi-fi than the HP did as well. For me, with the amount of print outs my kids do, it was a no brainer and I no longer have to wince when they are there printing away something for school. I've gone through almost two boxes of paper though!

Thanks, yes I could feel my blood pressure rising every time I heard the clank of that HP junk starting up, I never did manage to connect it via wifi and I understood Epson were better in that respect too.

After our expensive canon blocked up for the 800th time, we bought a cheap laser printer and it is absolutely brilliant. Not a moments hassle from it. The toner cart does like 1000 pages, never clogs and you can get really cheap 3rd party refills off amazon.
It also works out far cheaper to print off photos at photobox or whatever.
I would 100000% (approx) recommend everyone bins their ink cartridge printer and buy a cheap mono laser.

Take the hit up front and go laser. It'll last you far longer and be cheaper on ink in the long run. My monochrome Samsung is still going strong after 16 years.

The missus will want colour, she'll want it for all manner of craft stuff she constantly has on the go, so will the kids.

I used to have lots of "discussions" over the HP. Now I don't care at all as the ink lasts so long.
Actually, looking at my receipts, I bought the printer in January and it feels like it gets used almost every day. I bought a set of replacement bottles for it that cost £20 (not the £12 I thought) in August and I've used half of the black bottle to refill that one. All the inks are currently at 1/5th used including the colours that I've not filled since purchase. I've gone through 1 1/2 boxes of paper with 2,500 sheets in them, so that gives you an idea the use its being put to (~3,000 sheets). Its good as well because I can just forget about it for 6 months until it needs ink.
As I say, downside is blockages if you dont use it for a while. I noticed this twice in the last few months and had to do a few cleans on the last time as one of the dots was being a pain. The rest of the family didn't notice though.

But doesn't that one need cartridges that cost like £150 or something? The one I looked at they cost about £30 a set.

You can usually get unofficial carts quite cheap but not looked at that particular model. Monos are dirt cheap, about £15 so sure there will be colour ones too

Why didn't you buy one last week numnuts? Well I wasn't really mentally in a good state to be looking for Christmas presents last week tbh, normally I've done about 90% of my Xmas shopping by now but this year I've probably only done about 10% so need to get my skates on now.

I do like the idea of paper that doesn't flop, perhaps with paper stored in a drawer beneath so it doesn't get dusty either which happened to the old one if no-one used it for a while but the price is perhaps getting a bit much for that feature.

There are also online 3d printing services. Might be an option if you don't find anyone here with a 3d printer.

I now work at brother Uk, the printer company and I think I get discounts on products.

Our local Facebook groups usually come up trumps when someone asks similar on there.
What's the part number Dougs?

Is it these? ikparts.com/cs/p/ikea-115277/You know you can order some spares from IKEA for free? Whilst going through the motions I seem to have inadvertently ordered 4 of these for free though the order is pending so not sure if that's because they're unavailable or just because it is actually pending.

Thanks chaps. Couldn't find it for love nor money.
Edit: I should say, my kitchen is the old Faktum, not the newer Metod. No idea if the new clips fit.

My first link is for part number 115277 which according to that link is the Faktum one and the one I ordered, imagine if I ordered the last remaining 4 available in the UK! 😀
