Has anyone been playing Honkai Star Rail? I've tried it out the last couple of weeks and I find it very strange. It throws so much stuff at you with only the most cursory of explanations, the writing is fairly terrible (I've skipped my way through the text as fast as possible so far), and the battle system seems okay but with an auto-battle function why bother taking the time to learn it. Graphics are decent and it performs solidly.
It feels very broad but extremely shallow. First time I've really played one of these gacha games and can't see me playing another one if this is supposed to be one of the better examples.

LockeTribal Most gacha games have at least some degree of autobattling baked in, since parts of them are meant to be grinded a lot. Genshin Impact might be more up your alley, though. Out of the various gacha games I've played over the years, it's probably the closest to a "real" game I've seen. (that are still running, at any rate; there's a couple earlier Final Fantasy gacha that no longer have English servers that you might have enjoyed too). Plus it's got zero autobattling, so you'll have to learn and utilise its battle system whether you like it or not

I tried Just Cause 4 and what the hell is that game
First.
It looks pretty bad. Low resolution textures even though i have everything set to max.
second. it throws you into story like you supposed to know who everyone is. I never played any JC game but there is zero introduction. just assault that tower and then stuff being blown up left and right.
third. First proper mission. take some factory. then side mission I think, escort guy who is driving a truck. okay simple enough. enemies keep coming but we are going forward so some progress.
Arrive in small town and all hell breaks loose. enemies appear faster than i can shoot them but survive and time runs out, mission complete. Enemies keep coming, tanks, choppers, drones
constant explosions whole town is dead dozens of tanks and cars
so I fly away and thats even worse. now in open area all hell is breaking loose. planes flying, giant battleships on small river crashing into shore, constant tanks, cars, drones, choppers, artillery systems... got into one and just kept blowing shit up with no stop or even relief. then i died.
the hell is wrong with this game.

What happened to the RTS genre? Does anyone still make them?
The last one I remember hearing anything about was StarCraft 2

There are still a few. Dune: Spice Wars, Starship Troopers: Terran Command recently off the top of my head (neither of which I've played)
Stuff like the Total War games seems to get all the limelight these days though.

Company of Heroes is total shadow of its once great self. It really is sad, plus Relic had a quite a sizable amount of layoffs just to rub it in even further.

Zero-K and Beyond all Reason are free by the way.

Not a very strong showing to be honest. A lot of them come with the caveat that they might not ever see release or are C&C clones. Definitely get a dead genre feel from it, with no interest from publishers. There don't seem to be any big names there, mostly indie. Ex Westood, ex Blizzard being the biggest. I know Sins is a big deal but it's not really what I think of as an RTS. But generally, most look a bit rough
Had to laugh at the pixel game that's a copy of Tiberian Dawn (but with zombies for some reason) that looks worse than the 95 DOS original
The most promising was probably the ex Blizz dev's game but then they mentioned a focus on eSports
Were there any big games for the genre after StarCraft 2? I haven't played that (think it's online only?) but I remember there being some complaints at the time. Did it peak at WarCraft 3? I also remember C&C 4 being a weird entry that seems to have killed the series off
I've been playing Tiberian Sun recently and remembering how fun they can be. Only installed it for a quick nostalgia session and now I'm on the final NOD mission

Thinking about it, C&C3 came out after WC3 and was good. Another problem with the games on that list is that I got the impression many of them are PvP only

Well, sure, by that definition there aren't many games to play period. No matter which genre.
SC2 has gone F2P a while back, so it would be easy to try. There is a reason why the competitive scene is still going.
I'd assume that pretty much any RTS is going to have Skirmish mode.

The last RTS series to grab me was the Wargame series, particularly European Escalation.

Interesting take on autobattlers - messing around with the demo and hopefully it lives up to its promise on release.

Yeah I can't recall any other game more worthy of the Garbage Of The Year award than these two

Agree with 4 it is very poor, think SR 4 and to a lesser degree SR3. The game series peaked with 2, I would start there it still holds up pretty well, although JC3 is also pretty fun.

I want to say, I'm seeing a lot of new areas in Rain World, but never feel like I'm making any actual progress. I've been into, and mostly finished exploring, seven regions. Not sure how many there are. But I'm not really any closer to understanding what I must do. This is Demon's Souls world tendency-levels of obscure. There has ben a small breakthrough as of late: I've followed the yellow worm hints through the Industrial Complex, the Shaded Citadel, then the Shoreline, and finally I've met the robot-arm thing. I guess I can now glow in the dark? Sounds useful, though I have mostly explored the Shaded Citadel already. Anyway, I guess that hint is gone now, I can see what they tell me next. There is a gate in the Outskirts I still have to get into, but it's guarded by those damn monkeys with spears and I can't find a way to get them to leave their nest.

Well, I think I made a mistake in Rain World. After finding Looks to the Moon and being able to explore in the dark, instead of continuing to follow the yellow worm's hints, I went off on my own. After a grueling journey, I've made it to the Depths, and found some nightmare things that kept killing me. I realized it was most likely the final area, so I went and checked the wiki. Looks like I forgot to visit an important character, and now I can't finish the game without going all the way back. Which sounds... honestly unreasonable, given there's no fast travel and I'm basically all the way down and going back up would take ridiculously long. I kinda don't want to drop the game now that I'm so close to the end, can I still salvage this run somehow?

And was then removed. Seems like they accidentally added it early.

Lamplighters league game has been a broken mess at launch on gamepass (as its a shame as its from the team who did shadowrun games) and I like xcom style games. New patch today for series X and now it does not even load!. No idea how it got pass cert team at xbox (and its not just me as happening to other users on the sub reddit for the game)

On the RTS games conversation that was happening a little while ago, there is also the new Homeworld game coming up at some point, as well as a new Sins of a Solar Empire. Think both were supposed to be this year, but I'm assuming they are going to be next.
At the start of this year, it was sounding like there would be a bit of an RTS renaissance, with those 2 games, a new Company of Heroes, Dune: Spice Wars, The Great War: Western Front and Storm Gate from ex-Starcraft developers supposedly going into a beta or something. Unfortunately, Company of Heroes and Western Front weren't that great, Dune was met with a bit of a shrug, and I don't think the others turned up.
