I happend to spot Monopoly Fortnite going for about 6quid on amazon japan, so I grabbed it. Doing some research later it turns out they've recently released an updated version which is probably why it was so cheap. The rules are rather unclear in places, so we've had to google a few things or make executive decisions. But it's a pretty fun quick game that doesn't involve too much setup or thought. Seems to go a lot faster than regular monopoly. Instead of gaining or losing money you're gaining or losing health. You take damage when you land on other people's claimed areas. Chests give you items and weapons that you can use to damage other players or heal. The best mechanic is that every time you go past go you draw a 'storm' card and place it on an area of the board, which becomes damaging. So as the game continues more and more of the board is dealing damage, which leads to shorter snappier games. The only kinda disappointing part is how little trading factors in, as that was always the best part of vanilla monopoly. You can trade claimed areas, but because each set is only 2 areas there's not a lot of options. Plus the only benefit you get is that landing on your areas will give you a slight heal if you own the whole set. But because the storm is taking over areas, and the games are short, even if you make complete sets the odds of you landing on them more than once are pretty low. Age rating says 13+ but that's weird as it should be no problem for anyone over about 6. Dunno how well it'd work with 2 players as you'd rarely get LOS to shoot an opponent. not as fancy as the fancy board games, but not bad for a few quid.

Having recently polished off MyCity (the most boringly presented excellent game I’ve ever owned) the group is in the mood for more 3-way legacy action. Risk and two seasons of Pandemic already under our betls prior to this. SeaFall and Charterstone are options for the next in line. Any better suggestions or comments on those? Ideally we’re looking for sub 90 minute plays. Hive mind opinions appreciated.

Seafall and Charterstone are both pretty bad. Risk has a new legacy version called Shadow Forces that are supposed to be good. Gloomhaven is the big daddy of the group, but is nowhere near as casual as ones that you’ve listed. Clank Legacy is pretty good, and a good intro to deckbuilding if that’s your thing. King’s Dilemma is supposed to be very good too, but I’ve no experience with it. Generally speaking, true Legacy games have started to die off in favor of resettable campaigns.

If Gloomhaven is not casual enough, maybe Jaws Of The Lion as an easier intro to it?
Also what about Betrayal Legacy - is that meant to be decent?

Thanks both. The limiting factor is play time due to attention spans. It’s not a hardcore boardgame group (and if I’m honest I’m probably more on the casual side anyway - Scythe was about where I peaked ) so it has to be something reasonably quick to get into, and reasonably quick to play. Charterstone looks dry AF to me. SeaFall was only slightly better BUT IT HAS LITTLE BOATS YOU CAN PUSH AROUND! Gloomhaven and JotL looks a little RP-esque from the outside (same reason I couldn’t get King’s Legacy on the table) which would probably put ‘em off. Given free rein that’s what I’d already have on the table. I’ll check out Clank. Deck builders haven’t excited them to date though. Couldn’t even get them through Alien: Legacy Encounter. Probably shouldn’t have insisted on fancy dress and a full watch or all the movies. Interesting to hear that legacy games are dying off a bit. They’ve been a real boon for us in terms of impetus to actually play them, with the gacha-like box opening keeping things fresh.

Ffuuuuuuuck. Clank legacy looks amazing, even though I’ve never played any of the core games. Hrrnngg. I’m going to have to work on them.

Really enjoyed Sleeping Gods - there's not a ton of 'gameplay' in there but exploring the seas navigating the story routes is a ton of fun. Quite accessible too.
Campaign took us around 20 hours in total and you can save at practically any point. We've only seen about a fifth of what the game has to offer too. Would've started another campaign if ISS Vanguard didn't arrive.
Also think King's Dilemma is a cracker, especially if you keep the same five people for the playthrough. Incredibly social.

I backed the Lords of Vegas Kickstarter, for the reprint and the new expansions (and reprints of the previous. And some pokerchips). That's 150 quid I won't see again.
It's weird how good games can just stop being in print. I mean Lords Of Vegas had real scope to be a big game, fairly simple, fun mechanics, lots of dice rolling, but manageable luck... But yeah, just been out of print forever.
Quantum is another game that needs a reprint. One of my top ten but totally unavailable unless I want to pay over the odds for a second hand copy.
More related to the ongoing conversation - I'm enjoying Gloomhaven as a co-op I'm playing online (Epic have the computer version away a bit ago), but I can't imagine a game like that really finding it's feet in my group, our games rotate around so frequently that ongoing or legacy games wouldn't usually catch on.
Some games get played a lot but and some can be pretty rules heavy, but we tend not to play things that can't be completed in one session.

Pretty much no version of Clank! to be had in the UK, much less the legacy one. Jaws of the Lion likewise. Was sorely tempted by King's Dilemma but there's a pretty grim content warning that would likely be an issue for one of the ladies in the group so that's not an option. We'll probably just go with the rather beige looking Charterstone for something to play whilst waiting for something else to present itself. Odd that so many games that seem like must-haves just can't be had. Is this still the global pandemic shipping malaise? At this point I'm going to have to plan a trip to the US just to stock up on the game I wanna play! I got myself properly hyped for Clank! too.

I should probably qualify that I’m basing it on the eight or nine places I know and trust for such things. GameLore any good?

The unavailability of Clank may come down to it changing publisher recently. They were all published by Renegade until Dire Wolf (the developers) became their own publisher starting with Clank Catacombs.

Gameslore have been around for years and years, as dependable as you can get. No luck with Clank, probably down to what grem says. It's one of the problems with board games, the availability of anything that isn't a ticket to ride or love letter is incredibly at the whim of whether the publisher can afford to print any more at that time, and whether they still have the rights to it etc.

Gameslore are decent - in fact I think I might have used them for some of my early boardgame purchases.

My copy of Tanares Adventures just turned up today \o/
Been looking forward to this for aaaaages and feel a bit like a kid at Xmas.
Think this is the first ever Kickstarter I’ve actually backed, and holy shit there’s a lot of stuff… Currently sat here looking at 9 separate boxes and wondering what the hell I’m going to do with it all.
On the plus side though the game looks like the RPG board game I’ve always wanted, so that’s good. It looks immense.

Nice. I had the original Arena The Contest - it really was GMless D&D in a box, but Arena was basically just combat challenges only with nothing linking them together. Still extremely fun though. Kind of regret not backing Tanares in the end as that adds all the campaign and character development stuff it was missing.

I’d been hunting around for a copy of Arena when the Tanares Kickstarter dropped. Really liked the idea of a skirmish game using classic D&D-esque parties and powers, and then seeing a full on campaign getting added tipped me over. The art is cool too, it’s like the old Baldurs Gate character portraits, but everywhere. It is pleasingly old skool.

Detective: City of Angels has just arrived - looking forward to playing it in co-op with the other half this weekend and then having a crack as The Chisel with some mates early next week. I know a few here didn't rate it so well but everything I've seen makes it seem right up my street. Still waiting on Heat: Pedal to the Metal to arrive

Most of my group love Mille Fiori, and it's getting mostly positive noise but it's just not clicking for me.
Too point salady for me.
It looks very lovely but I just can't compute what makes a good move or not. I'm not a min-maxer all but I just can't tell what a decent move versus a good move is. I can see why people like it but there's too much going on for my stupid head.

I finally crumbled and ordered ISS Vanguard. In fact, having ordered it from my (expensive) local shop I stumbled on the fact the late pledge for the second wave had a day to run so ordered it for the equivalent of 50 quid more with a tonne of extras bundled in. The downside is I guess I'll have to wait until Autumn to get it. In the meantime, I'm looking for a similar experience. I've been sorely tempted by Sleeping Gods but rhaegyr 's comment above about the lack of game concerns me a bit. I see my shop has Xia in stock, with the expansion that fixes various issues. Anyone tried that? It looks pretty great I have to say.

After a year and half or so of waiting, finally received my Kickstarter set of Doomtown: Weird West Edition, the revised starter set for the great card game. Not sure why I keep buying stuff for this game when I already have a shit load of the cards (I got the complete set when Pinebox first picked up the game and did a Kickstarter), but barely ever get to play. I only have one boardgame buddy and we only get to play 4 or 5 times a year, of which 1 of those might be a Doomtown session.
Just love the game so much though. It manages to evoke that Western feel so well and the poker mechanic is brilliant. For those that don't know the game, your cards also have playing card values (dudes on spades, goods on hearts, deeds on diamonds and actions on clubs). When a shoot out kicks off, you draw cards to form poker hands, with number drawn varying depending on number of bullets your dudes in the posse have. You then have to form the best poker hand to win the fight. As your deck can have up to four cards of the same value, five-of-a-kinds are possible. Brilliantly tense and adds a whole new dimension to the deck building side.
Plus, the general movement mechanics add lots of strategy to how you position dudes, to make the game often feel like some mad combination of Magic, poker and chess.
Definitely has a step learning curve, but it is a really rewarding once you get beyond throwing all your dudes in the centre of town for shootouts and wondering why the game feels completely random.

Probably the wrong thread but can anybody help with advice for Dungeons and dragons .
My son who’s just turned 11 wants to get into it got the beginners one for his birthday . I researched online for hours how I can be the Dm for the adventure and 4 of us played for a couple of hours but it was pretty tough.
Other than finding somewhere local is there a way he can play online with fellow beginners or people to help and maybe I can set up a game for him and monitor it

I'm being tentative as I've never actually used it but it seems to be one of the default platforms for playing any kind of TTRPG online, and it has options for finding groups etc. You'll need to sign up though (I have, just never actually used it!).
