It turns out I know fuck all about central heating or radiators.
Also turns out I don’t think my radiators have TRVs, just the manual “Set how much water flows thro’ this radiator” type.
So, do those ever break? Because mine don’t seem to work at all.

I know how to turn the valves on mine and how to bleed them and top the pressure (get that needle to the edge of the dial for best results, right?) That's about all I need to know. For anything else just get a professional in.

So this is a TRV. The bit above the red line is the TRV and can be replaced as described. If you need to do anything to the yellow arrow bit (like fitting new valves if your rad doesn't have them), you'll need to drain the radiator and turn off the water. And make sure you have some ptfe tape. Or get a plumber.

So, do those ever break? Because mine don’t seem to work at all. The one end you can easily adjust is the flow in to the radiator, the other end should have a flat head screwdriver slot which is the return. You throttle the return when you balance the whole system on a dual pipe set up, so only just enough hot water goes in and get held there while the rest of the water bypasses to the next radiator. if someone’s fucked around or changed the radiator set up, you might have some cold radiators which have reduced return rates and not enough hot water gets in no matter how much you open the inlet valve. The other cause could be a massive build up of sludge which costs a lot of money to fix

Could be the valve that's fucked. Tis on the one in my son's room - fucking thing doesn't adjust properly regardless of the temperature. It's either on or off. Have replaced the top bit, unstuck the nobbly bit (the pin!) but made no difference. I'll get the plumber to sort when we eventually sort his room.

So that’s a TVR one? If so, am I breaking the “Don’t have a TVR in the same room as the thermostat” rule?

I really think you need a plumber.

I can't fix radiators, can't plumb anything and I sure as shit can't rewire a socket/plug.
I'm lactose intolerant but sometimes eat meals with huge amounts of diary and suffer afterwards.
If the apocalypse occurs in my lifetime I'll either have to be a cannibal warlord or cut price sex worker as I have very few practical skill sets.

Yes, they do break, they have a life of about 18-20years before the expanding wax thing inside gives out and you have to take them off for the radiator to work. You can buy just the valve, I've had replaced all of them in the last 2 years in our 20 year old new build. I get this exact one www.screwfix.com/p/drayton-rt212-trv-sensing-head/569hg
