On the smoking topic, I went to NHS counselling years ago to get off smoking. Me and me mate Martyn, at school, tried to avoid the peer pressure side, but we loved the cool movie stars and rebel pop/rock artists. So, at a mates house party, we went halves on a packet of Slik Cut, but smoked them when no one was looking. Like, proper outside, behind the bins, just to satisfy the curiosity. Never did it again.

Then I got a job with a girl, sorry woman, called Jayne. I thought I would never meet a better woman. But apart from work, we hardly shared a spare moment. As a single father, it was hard to socialise. So I started smoking, so we could spend time together when she went for a fag. She said I thought you didn’t smoke, and I lied that I had being trying to give up. Long story, short, it went nowhere. But I kept on smoking after spending several months building up an addiction.

So the counsellor tells me that that the stress relief from smoking isn’t the cigarette, but the deep inhalation. She taught me some breathing exercising and it worked.

I gave up smoking tobacco 2 years ago, it kills you apparently. I'd happily start again tomorrow because something has to.

Honestly the best part of smoking is the event of going to smoke with the other smokers at parties or at work etc. For some reason it's the ultimate ice breaker. You'll often end up out there with someone you wouldn't normally put in any time with, and those five minutes away from the rabble and the music usually involve the guard being brought down and it all works very well on the pull. It works in work situations too, like when I'm onsite with a client and they smoke I'll usually join them and that's the time we can talk shit rather than being strictly business.


The smoking ban has been really successful and most smokers I know my age wouldn't dream of smoking indoors period even if they were in a situation where it was allowed. Going outside is completely part of the process. There's usually a gasp of panic if a child approaches while you're outside. Of course this may not apply to boomers

Try telling that to my girlfriend's dad... I come home smelling like an ashtray every time we visit because he still smokes indoors.

It's absolutely fucking grim. Clothes straight in the machine and then into the shower as soon as we get home!

I once got told off by the health visitor for feeding the baby while smoking a cigarette. I think she was worried I was going to drop ash on its head.
