It’s easy to be annoyed with Melissa McCarthy with the travel website ads and crap film after crap film. But every now and then she does something really good. I used to say every time she makes a film the Gods toss a coin, but in reality they throw two twelve-sided die. Double twelves and you’ve got a good film. Can You Ever Forgive Me? was a genuinely good film, and McCarthy was great in it. Reminds me how Adam Sandler is usually insufferable but then he stars in something like Uncut Gems and it's surprising how good he is. Yep. I’m also a strong supporter of Spy and Bridesmaids as well. Funnily enough I was going to draw a comparison between her and Sandler, but as crap as her films can be at least they’re not filled to the brim with shameless product placement. Hell, they couldn’t even resist a little pudding promotion in Punch Drunk Love…

She was good in Gilmore Girls originally as well iirc. (it's been a while)

As good as she was in Forgive Me, E Grant was the star of that

You mean actors can perform well when given a good script and good direction? Never! Although whilst I'm not a massive fan of either McCarthy or Sandler, don't underestimate how difficult comedy is. That they've been genuinely good in a few films each shows they can act, absolutely.

I think more than anything it just shows how difficult it might be to stand out and make money as a comedic actor. The likes of Sandler and McCarthy clearly have a schtick that works for them, and allows them to flex their acting chops every now and then in better movies too. Same with the likes of Williams, Carrey and Ferrell, who might be better regarded as comedic actors but all had their critics at some stage.

I do wonder if it’s a case of just not turning down work. Like I said before, it’s not like there are a huge number of interesting roles going around, especially for female actors, and so there is something to be said for just picking up the work, getting paid and staying in theatres.
I mean when was the last time Morgan Freeman made a decent film?

Still going through that Reddit and still enjoying the nice ones best - another good one and very happy to read it:
“ Honourable mentions: Dave Grohl is a known sweetheart and fairly so, as he's a lovely, lovely man. Literally tipped me £100 when he heard I was off to uni in a few weeks and told me to use it for my textbooks. ”

Like I said before, it’s not like there are a huge number of interesting roles going around, especially for female actors, and so there is something to be said for just picking up the work, getting paid and staying in theatres. I mean when was the last time Morgan Freeman made a decent film? I sometimes wonder about this. There are some actors who seem to only do occasional roles that they've selected very carefully, and then others that just seem to be constantly working, but on pretty much anything. The Bruce Willis thing was famously down to trying to make as much cash as possible for his family before it was too late, but they can't all be that. A lot of the big name ones must never need to work again (unless they have massive drug habits to support), so is it purely down to a love of acting, even if it's a shitty movie? I also wonder about less famous actors. There are a bunch of actors who have one medium-sized role and then nothing much again. Eg, they are the lead in a tv show that's not a huge hit and has a couple of seasons. Do they make enough from that to live on forever? On the other hand you have other actors who are constantly doing guest-star roles in dozens of shows/movies. (though that seems much more common in the UK than the US with people showing up on soaps, casualty, etc... Maybe due to US shows paying a lot more.)

I can imagine it feeds a certain need to be seen and recognised. I've thought about acting but the idea that people could come up and be like "oh I saw you in that thing can I have a picture?"
I would either be really lovely or really shitty about it. I think there's something in being able to just go to the shop.
I'd be interested to know if there's a crossover with celebs who had proper jobs before getting famous and being nice to other people.

I mean Geefe is perfect for a Forrest Gump remake. Planning my run across America, as we speak. Though, if you look at his route, it kind of zig zags all over the fucking place. I also gather it massively played down shit like him having no paths to run on, for large portions of the journey and seemingly having no camping equipment - which would be a necessity.

I mean Geefe is perfect for a Forrest Gump remake. And would totally meet the "you look shorter in real life than on screen" standard.

Haven’t seen anything else I can think of so to me I think she’s funny until proven otherwise.

Not sure if mentioned before but Stephen Graham is a proper wanker IRL. My wife has met him a few times.

I’ve met Stephen Graham. He was very polite but a bit blokey and intense. I did my very best not to piss him off. He was teamed up with Daniel Mayes who I have to admit I preferred spending time with.
It was actually the last bit of work I did before COVID erupted and kind of fucked my career up. I didn’t eat all day and after the job I was just destroying a bag of Doritos on the tube home, not knowing that there were death germs everywhere and the next day the whole world shut down.

New one I’ve just heard… a colleague of mine worked on The Voice and… yeah I thought will.i.am too… but apparently Tom Jones is a shit and his son is never far away, and despite not being famous will flip into rages all the time.
