I think the biggest tragedy of what NME called the New Acoustic Movement was that Snow Patrol opted to go down that route. Their first two albums (1998 and 2001) are genuinely good, Pavement-influenced indie rock affairs; then Coldplay became huge, and Snow Patrol's third album (2003) seemed like a cynical, calculated take on Martin-esque arena-ready schmaltz. They never looked back. Christ. Where to begin with this mess

Unfortunately you've spunked out a random collection of very poor bands/songs and it will take me a day to listen to them, plus constructing a proper response explaining their mediocrity AS WELL AS considering alternatives that aren't excessively threatening. So please bear with. You made this average bed, after all

Actually fuck that. Just stick Reign in Blood on for half an hour and chant "Snow Patrol should not exist"

I had no idea this would be so contentious!
I'm going to have to listen to the first two Snow Patrol albums tomorrow, but my recollection is that they are/were good; then they decided they wanted to be the next Coldplay/Travis/Athlete/Turin Brakes/Kings of Convenience/etc., and everything they've released since has been putrid trash.
The same thing happened with Weezer - two good albums, followed by a career's worth of absolute dreck (although that was because Rivers Cuomo gradually disappeared up his own rectal passage, rather than a calculated decision to sell out).
In the spirit of digging myself in even deeper, let me state that South of Heaven is better than Reign in Blood.

Kings of Convenience had a solid debut but they always looked like the backing band to Grand Designs

You're not a prick, mate - you're a good guy who happens to be wrong about the first two Snow Patrol albums, that's all. Even Wikipedia backs me up:
They don't allow just anyone to write those Wikpedia entries, you know!

Whilst we are at it The Pink Album is better than Diary.

Does anyone remember JJ72? Totally wank like all NME darlings.
Honestly, anyone saying music is worse now doesn't listen to much music.

I do.
I'd admit to liking a couple of their songs back in the day, but I've taken enough of a kicking in this thread for one evening!

Two vaguely cute bassists, if memory serves. (Not both at the same time.)

I remember her being very firmly cute. The guitarist in Ash too, I had a big crush on her. Another band that went totally shit after a handful of songs.

I will if you yelp it like the KoL singer. There was little, if any, yelping on the first 2-3 albums. They did go tits up after that but after hearing Sex on Fire the first time I pretty much cut ties Me too, loved first 2 albums, 3rd ok then the 4th one and stadiums came along … This thread made me Google them and they have 8 now, fuck, I feel old. Their debut was 19 years ago

Some good stuff here to unpick. Agree with lots but not all. Wholeheartedly agree that snow patrol, Coldplay and most of the other fucks can get in the fucking sea. I have a slight soft spot for Razorlight though. Unexplained really. Kings of Leon were ok live when I saw them in 2011/12, pretty tight, but a bit by the numbers.

I own and still quite like (some of) Up All Night. There's some good stuff on there. If Borrell didn't have his messiah complex and stopped hanging out at the World's End with all the other wankers of that age they might have written a few more half decent tracks

What? Don't tell me you're a big JJ72 fan. I apologise to all JJ72 fans. Nah I think I was having a vague overreaction to the "All music is shite" point in a very narrow way. I listen to a fair bit of new stuff for a 40 year old white dickhead and get upset about autotune quite often as a result. I can't even remember what JJ72 is. Was it one of those branded E's circa 1999?

Oh lord did we go down an early 2000s "what band is on shit Sky digital music channel" rabbit hole? Post-britpop indie was, largely, poor shoegaze until Libertines came along and then everyone wanted to be like them.
Anyway, I find Richard Ayoade one dimensional and wish he'd drop the fucking character he's made for himself.
