Rogue One was fine. It was a bunch of people with no defining characteristics, interspersed with a load of “Hey! Remember that guy / bit from that other film? Look!” bits, who were thankfully involved in a very cool fight at the end that was very Star Wars-y indeed

I wonder how opinions will settle around this new batch of SW films in around 10-15 years' time.
For the prequels, it seems generally accepted that Phantom Menace is decent, ROTS is average/poor and AOTC is piss poor.
Barring TFA (good) and Solo (bad) opinions vary wildly on this new batch of films.
The above could all be anecdotal bollocks, though.

I think it’s the best looking of the new product, for sure (other than the digital homunculi), which I think carries it a long way. The world does look very lived in. Gareth Edwards has a good eye.

I think opinion will settle on release order for the rankings. The first one is algorithmically competent, the second one is nowhere near as bad as people make out and the third one is a garbage fire.

Andor definitely carries on that aesthetic. Watched another one this morning, can't quite believe how well made it is. It's approaching the very top tier of TV shows for me now.

I liked The Force Awakens very much, and that goodwill carried me into enjoying the follow up, helped immeasurably by Mark Hamill.
The third was colossal poo though. Dark Knight Rises all over again.

I can’t bring myself to watch the third one again to reconfirm how bad I found it.

Yeah I like the first two. The third one was like some kind of fever dream. Still haven't got a clue what the fuck it was about.

TFA was very safe, but quite enjoyable. And I actually think it was the correct approach for the first film in the new trilogy.
TLJ is *very* flawed, but is also the film that tries to actually bring something new to the franchise, and does the most interesting things of the new films.
ROS is garbage... There are some nice bits, I guess, but it's so fragmented. It feels like several, potentially better films, were hacked apart and assembled happazardley.

Heh, maybe opinion is settling quicker than I thought.
Hard choice between ROS and AOTC as the worst Star Wars film.

4 & 5 > 6 & Rogue One & Andor >>> Mando > 1 > 7 & 3 > Obi > Solo > BOBF (excluding Mando eps) & 2 & 8 >>> 9
Might switch around depending on mood, and if Andor continues to be as good as it has been, it'll sit alongside 4 & 5. But I would put them roughly in that order, or at least in probability of me watching them again.

Never actually considered it but I would put ROS below AOTC.

I'd still rather watch RoS than any of the prequels.

+1, I cannot get on board with any of the prequels. So much dated CGI and even lauded scenes such as the Kenobi/Grievous fight are horribly stilted and flat.
For me, these are the Zack Snyder-esque films.

ESB > ANH > TLJ > ROTJ > R1 > TFA > TPM > SOLO > ROTS > AOTC > ROS
yes, I'm putting TLJ above ROTJ. Fuck the Ewoks.
Admittedly I've not seen the prequels for years, so maybe they'd be worse than ROS. But I'm not inclined to rewatch any of them to find out.
If we're including the series, haven't watched most of them. But I'd probably put Mandalorian quite high, like, above TLJ at least.

All I can really recall about RoS was some people riding horse things along the side of a star destroyer.
Or did I dream that?

The the thing the prequels have going for them is that, as rubbish as they are, they still feel like star wars. RoS hasnt even got that going for it, its just overly long and stupid. A least the prequels actually lead somewhere and tell a (boring) story.
Its like choosing cat or dog shit, admittedly, but I would take any of the prequels over RoS.

All that said, I did very much like the visuals of the sith temple and the Roujin Z Emperor. I thought all of that design and whatnot was excellent. Its just a shame everything that happened with it and around it was cinematic downs syndrome.

See they don't feel like Star Wars to me. A huge part of why I like it is the grimy lived in aesthetic, making everything feel alive and believable. The prequels and all clean and shiny and dayglo with everything looking plastic and shit. The stupid cgi creatures standing in the woopsie, the stupid fucking Roger Roger robots, they even managed to make stormtroopers look shit. Then everyone just standing around talking to each other with green screen behind them interspliced with shit PS2 level action scenes. I got myself all angry about them again.

There’s bits of them that are good but it’s lost amongst there being so much that is either bad or boring. There is at least an hour or so that’s very good amongst the 6 hours or so.

In fact everything they introduced into the SW lexicon is fucking horseshit imo. For all the above, plus Obi-wan's robes suddenly becoming de facto Jedi fashion. Yoda flipping about like a fucking idiot. Everything. The bobbleheaded clone makers, the clones, Bobby Fett having an idiot father. Everything. The only time I remotely felt like I was watching SW was the closing minutes of Revenge of the Sith or whatever the third one is called.

This is why the only decent SW film outside of the OG trilogy is Rogue One, as that's the only other one that's felt the same.

I guess I’ll find out when my rewatch catches up to them but my general memory of the sequel trilogy is that its a bunch of cool sounding set pieces without a strong plot to hold them together - and that that issue only increases across the series

All of this to say that Star Wars, as an 11 ( ) film franchise with a bunch of tv shows and other media, was creatively drained by 1980?

If you watch them in fairly close proximity, it is very obvious that they had no goal other than 'make a star wars movie' and didnt really give a shit about telling a good story.
Even though I dont actually mind the second one, its crazy that they just let him have at it rather than even vaguely attempting some standardisation or narrative cohesion through the trilogy.
