I wonder if we'll ever see Doctor Aphra in live action. She's one of the breakout characters from the comics and a lot of fun so it'd be cool to see her appear on one of the shows.

“ there aren’t any out of place cgi beasties like in ANH.”
You’re in for Treat with the band and that song in jabbas palace in the ROTJ…

I loved the original sly snootles song in return of the Jedi, it was pure space funk. The special edition changes it to the muppet show in cgi

And they binned the original song from the end too

Back when Luke was badass. One thing I’ve noticed this time around is how Luke basically has a whole new personality in each film

ROTJ definitely suffers the most from Lucas Special Edition tinkering, the songs that book end it are the most obvious issue but there’s also a small scene between Vader and the Emperor that I think might be new which is very tell-don’t-show. Extra bits of dialogue and a new Anakin at the end too.
In general, its obviously a tonal shift from the previous two films toward being more explicitly aimed at kids. I’d forgotten that the Ewoks are basically around for two-thirds of the film. The Skywalker family drama stuff feels a little rushed and the Imperials look like real chumps on the ground. The space combat is still cool and Scout Troopers obviously look great.
As above Luke’s personality shifts quite dramatically between films and in this one serious Jedi Knight Luke is a bit of a stuck up dick. He’s very arrogant for someone whose done basically no training which I suppose is meant to set up a will he/won’t he be temped by the Emperor. Its an odd contrast to Vader who is sliding rapidly back into being Hayden Christensen.
I know there were a lot of big live action kids fantasy films in the mid-80s so it’d be interesting to doublecheck whether this was the start of them or influenced by them.
Overall though most of those nitpicks are in relation to it following two perfect films and it is a pretty effective end to the series even if the SE is trying to realigned it closer to the prequels.

I absolutely do not remember a song at the end of original Return of the Jedi.

They replaced the beloved ‘yub nub song’ where the cast parties with ewoks with generic spa music and cuts to bad CGI locations from the prequels blasting fireworks in celebration.
It’s arguably the most egregious change of the lot.

Say what you will about the prequel and sequel trilogies, neither of them did this
It might be the genuine low point of the rewatch so far

Compare that to the original: youtu.be/2w25pcTIFlQI wouldn’t say the original is better and it does feel like a weird segment from Fraggle Rock, but there was no point in changing it.

Lucas updated it for the kids, because kids love seeing alien epiglottis.

Original scene : reasonably restrained, bit of a gangster's jazz club vibe for Jabba's entertainment, obvious Muppets
Special edition : it's a nineties music video more concerned with the band than anything else, not subtle, obvious CGI, shite.

The original has a general seediness to it that hints at Jabba’s palace being a debauched place as well as a violent one too

Is this considered jizz or is that just the music in the bar in A New Hope? I don't know why Disney hasn't released the 4K versions of the theatrical release or added them to Disney+. It surely would sell to everyone, even if they already own the special edition in 4K. I can only assume that Lucas included a ban on them as part of the sale. Never actually seen the original versions. My introduction to the films were the Special Editions in 1997 when I was 10 and since then it hasn't been possible to watch them officially. I was holding off waiting on an official release, but probably should just get hold of the fan edit.

I'm glad I got to see the theatrical release of RotJ back in 1983, thirteen year old me was looking forward to another film seeing how what was left of the Empire was taken down. If I'd seen people on Coruscant celebrating I'd have been wondering what the fuck was going on, the destruction of the Death Star wasn't the fall of the Hitler bunker, the Empire still existed.

Doing an Alien style “here’s both versions” boxset makes sense. Its not like Disney needs to worry about the cost

Maybe Lucas wasn’t lying when he said no original versions still exist? I find it hard to believe, but you never know.

The song changes are odd, and unnecessary replacements, as are all the shit cgi added to ANH, but the editing in of the young anakin as well as all the other shit into the end of RotJ really bugs me.
They really should have just been left them all as they were. It adds nothing.
But does add a bit of ANNOYANCE into my nostagia.

Lucas didn't even have to consider if the film's director may have had a difference of opinion on the special edition as Richard Marquand died in 1987. I doubt Lucas would have been that bothered but look at how little Empire was changed, Gary Kurtz was still around until 2018.
Marquand's career should have been a lot longer dying of an embolism causing a stroke just before his fiftieth birthday is rather sad.

I think I’ve got the originals on vhs as well. One major credit in ROTJ’s favour it does feature the most moving scene in the trilogy the ewok trying to shake some life into its deceased partner after they get blasted

The theatrical versions were the second disc bonus on the DVD remaster release of the OT, Lucas didn't want to remaster them though so they're the LD versions. I bought them for 6 quid each when HMV were clearing them out about 15 years ago but my copy of Empire DVD has gone missing, bugger.

I thought that all commercially released versions were still updated versions, like Episode IV : A New Hope being added to the title crawl of Star Wars. Minor changes to the original theatrical release, but changes still. Even the double DVD releases of the original trilogy weren’t the theatrical versions.
