at the risk of being all defender-of-the-media I suspect the reason no major (or even minor) outlet are running it is for the more basic reason that they can't stand it up. doesn't mean it's not true, but a gem encrusted dildo is going to feel delicate compared to the shafting you'll get if you print that without multiple first hand sources or photos
I did meet an italian bloke who claimed to be the guy who took the photos of princess fergie having her toes nibbled (which the press* printed with glee)

The two reasons they dont run stories on William is that [media outlet] would immediately lose access to the future king and because Wills is quite popular, so they risk a bit of a backlash.
'The Contract' of not printing bad things about major royals and them smiling nicely for the cameras is as old as it gets. The problem is, as a lot of celebrities and news outlets are finding, their control doesnt extend to some rando saying 'William likes it up the arse' on twitter.

some will be thinking of leverage, or future gongs, or whatever. some may even think they're too classy (they're most definitely not) for such a story. but there really isn't a homogenous "the media" who have all, as one, arranged to act in unison
I really do think the reason pubs large & small, left & right, have all steered clear so far is that they have legal departments
none of which means it is or isn't true
