Yeah even the first POTC I felt he was a bit too mumbly and unfocused in to say that was a great performance. It was a lot of characterisations but not a lot of character for my taste. And then he doubled down in the sequels that I saw. Think I gave up after the 3rd.

People lately have been saying Brad Pitt is a character actor trapped in a leading man's body, and for the first half of his career, that would've been an apt description of Depp. The problem is that once he found the Jack Sparrow character, every other role became version of that, where before his performances were really unique.

All that Pirates money turned him into an arsehole, same as Nic Cage and his Bruckheimer dough (for a while, he seems to have come out the other side through all sorts of meme-ery and genuine earnest fruitloopiness to be everyone's favourite again).
Depp just comes off as a massive douche, having Brian Warner as your best friend doesn't do much for his image, apart from with Men First toxic internet dicks.

He’s come across as quite funny and charming on the stand. Great rapport with his legal team and he seems very genuine. Always made time for his fans, no one really had a bad word to say for him before Amber Heard (and today Ellen Barkin). His security was with him for 20y which is very rare and I doubt would happen if principal was a whopper. I’ve actually met people who crewed his yacht and they said he was lovely. May have been a dick when he’s drunk a few times and had a few flaming rows which seem like he just gave as good as he got. Seems alright to me 🤷♂️ |
