I watched Mmmmbop on YT the other day, don't ask. One of the top comments was: "I'm going to tell my kids this is Nirvana"
I lolled.

I find them slightly more enjoyable than Oasis. That's a very low bar.

I never really 'got' them. Loved Nirvana, but even the first 2 albums always left me a bit cold. I never hated them, and I think they're 'fine', but I also didn't really understand how they got as big as they did.
Well, they do good songs for listening to in the car I guess, and that thing where they get loud half way through each song.
But Grohl always seemed like a nice guy, so I wished them luck and bought the occasional album in the hope it'd wow me.
At least they were better than Pearl Jam, so there was that.

Yes, I won't turn them off like I do for Oasis, I just can't really tell any of their songs apart.

Iâm very much in the âfirst three albums are good but thereâs only been maybe three good songs since thenâ camp when it comes to their music. They were always a band that everyone seemed to like but youâd never imagine them ever being anyoneâs favourite band, even at school.
I do think their Studio 666 movie was fun and maybe the most entertaining thing theyâve done since the 90s. Iâd recommend that if you want an Evil Dead type thing with a bunch of rock in-jokes for an easy Saturday night watch.

One of my friends is a megafan. She sees them pretty much every time they visit the UK.
I probably should check in on her....

Ach, you big miseries! Yeah, they are very much MOR rock but do it competently and at least seem to enjoy what they're doing. They're not pushing boundaries but I think there's a place for that. And I still prefer their music to a whole load of newer acts. Mind you, I am stuck in the 90s. And I'll fight you re PJ.

My sister is a massive fan. She jaunts all over Europe to see them.
They are a musical shrug to me.

I'm with Nick: Foo Fighters = Coldplay + (mild) distortion.
That said, I did enjoy their debut album.
If anything about them thereafter made me glad they existed, it was Hawkins rather than Grohl - dude was not only a fantastic drummer, but he always had the biggest grin on his face.

Tbh I don't like or dislike their music tbh, it's just *there*. It's fairly inoffensive background music. But generally thought Grohl seems like a decent bloke in interviews.
I do find it strange how someone into hardcore and metal ended up making stuff that's so MOR and unedgy.

They are just in that big bucket of music that I hear all the time but never actually listen to. Like if someone hadn't said 'this is Ed Sheeran', I would swear I had never heard a single one of his songs.

His finest work was undoubtedly appearing as the devil in Tenacious Dâs video for Tribute.

Why are we not surprised the people we like are dickheads? Josh Homme kicking that female photographer comes to mind too.

Considering he played in Scream and Nirvana, and used his mainstream cachet to do the Probot side project, it does seem weird that his day job is so... I don't want to say "vanilla", as vanilla is actually a flavour.
EDIT: Or, as alluded above, he just knows how to make bank from the insipid arena shit while saving anything remotely interesting for side gigs and guest spots.

Here's the correct overview - their first two albums are really good. Then it's a quick decline into mediocrity and increased popularity, so it kind of makes sense they keep churning out MOR stuff and filling arenas. I gave up following their music several albums ago, I think that double one with Dave doing acoustic tappy tappy stuff was my limit.

The only decent thing Grohl's done since Nirvana is drumming on Songs for the Deaf.

Cobain shot himself because he heard some of Grohls Foo Fighters songs.

The fake band he invented and made a record for as Studio 666 soundtrack were probably the closest weâll get to another Probot The worst thing they ever did was when the bassist hooked them up with that charity that turned out to be AIDS denialist and urges HIV positive patients to stop taking their meds.

I like the first three albums but it quickly turns into just listening to the best of songs after that. Every album has 1 or 2 that are catchy but nothing sticks.
Could be because 25 years ago Iâd have one album on repeat endlessly and now I donât, could be they got worse/boring. Dunno but some other bands have stayed far more interesting in what they do.

Foo Fighters are probably one of the only true stadium rock bands still touring. I've also given up listening to their newer albums, but they still know how to put on a great show.

I donât think the Foo Fighters are untrue to themselves.

I think thereâs room for avant garde and there is room for stadium choruses with crunchy guitar chords and big drums. Not everything has to be âedgyâ or âchallengingâ and itâs so much more fun liking more stuff than less for me, and also much more fun to read about why somebody likes something than why they donât.
I sometimes like to listen to Converge or Morbid Angel but 9/10 these days itâll be something more melodic. I think itâd do my head in to only listen to harder edged or left field stuff exclusively. It doesnât seem different when thatâs all you have and thatâs from past experience
If people want to hear them do something a bit darker and more different go and listen to The Teacher which is about his mother passing. I find that both musically excellent and really quite emotional. They even did it live when I saw them recently - will never forget that snare drop in it live.
That said, the recent stadium show I saw was packed with casuals who knew Everlong and Learn to Fly so maybe it comes at a price. The reaction to the likes of Generator or Aurora was a stark difference to when I saw them tour the third album in a theatre. I couldnât believe people would pay those ticket prices and not know their shit.
Edit - I do hope itâs not a teenager or this will age really badlyâŚ

Seen plenty of bands who have melodic songs, big chorus singalongs and aren't really breaking the mould (Haim, Tame Impala, Spoon, War on Drugs etc). Just find the Foo's a bit generic. Horses for courses and all that.

I never much liked discussing sex offenders anyway. Can we just relabel this as a Foo Fighters thread?

The only foo fighters song I can listen to is âwheelsâ which is weirdly their most MOR song as it sounds like Tom Petty.
The other stuff is absolute top tier cack
