It was his only option, really. Everyone thinks he is guilty anyway and if this had made it to court even Lionel Hutz would have shredded him and there are more necks on the block than this idiots. Who knows who he would have ended up dragging into this.
£12m is probably him getting off lightly.

The surprising thing was that he didn't pay her off years ago, he comes across as thick as shit, but you'd think his handlers would've been on top of all that.
You can do evil things if you're filthy rich, you just gotta know when to pay off or bump off before it gets near the press.

He's just yapping saying he wants his day in court. In his heart he knows the firm would never allow him to travel to the the US and stand trial, and face the possibility of being physically seized and put in jail if/when found guilty.
It was probably a combination of the smear threats on the girl, but also telling her to take the money because we aren't letting him go on trial. It's either 12 million or nothing. It would just have to be more than she could expect to get by selling an exclusive interview.
