As if most kids aren’t losing their virginity before 16 anyway. The age consent laws don’t exist to stop under 16s fucking each other. They’re to protect them from adults. Which is what we’re talking about here. It’s important not to conflate different issues here. Rape is rape and nobody is victim blaming in that respect. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a conversation to be had about the age of consent. There is a discussion to be had about the age of consent but the proximity of that to the issues with Brand do make it feel like people are suggesting that age of consent being higher would have put him/other creeps off younger people. In reality I think it would do absolutely nothing for them and isn’t the best solution, that must be one that involves support and education. Increasing the age of consent pushes the issue onto the teens instead of creepy older people thinking maybe having sex with a 16 year old is wrong. Incidentally less than half have had sex at 16 according to studies. Self reported stats put it quite a bit lower and that’s guaranteed to be higher than reality. The discussion surrounding this has largely been sparked by the woman who was 16 when brand groomed her. In the times article it says that she's now campaigning to raise the age of consent, so it's not like people here or elsewhere have come to this idea without being informed by who wants this change. |

I’ve finally watched the dispatches thing last night and it’s changed my view somewhat. At the very least he’s a narcissistic cunt who massively abused his power and fame to fuck whoever he wanted .
Unfortunately if the rape claims are true I fear it could be their word against his . I hope they can go to that rape clinic one of the accusers went to for some records .
Again the tv studios turning a blind eye to things and I’m sure there’s many more . I’m still not sure if Brand has actually changed to a slightly better person since then or the fact he knows he can’t get away with it nowadays . Or if he might have known this shit was coming his way and he’s deliberately set up this YouTube persona as a defence

I think it's pretty clear he's seen this coming for some time and has had years to shore up his defences.
It's probably very true his wild years are behind him. He's got a wife and kids, and has previously mentioned that having daughters was the turning point where he could no longer use porn etc. He may well be a devoted family man now.
But it's the Bojack Horseman catch - just because someone has gone straight and their life is all about peace, yoga and good vibes now, it doesn't mean they get an amnesty for everything that came before. There's got to be a reckoning. And if that fucks up the idillic life he has for himself now - too fucking bad.
BUt as others have said, I wonder if anyone can actually get these allegations to stick. The justice system seems to favour the defendent unless there's an overwhelming, Weinstein amount of evidence against them. If they can't nail John Leslie, what hope do we have here?

I think its more likely that a lot of his enablers and enabling factors have disappeared than he’s had a shift in attitude.
TV companies probably aren’t likely to send cars to secondary schools to pick up children or have runners invite the sexiest audience members back to hotel rooms.
Plus you’ve got someone like Kathrine Ryan near the top of the tree. While she wouldn’t give his name to Louis Theroux on camera you can bet Channel 4 and Comedy Central knew and they wouldn’t want to risk losing someone like her or Joe Lycett for Brand these days.
And there’s a general shift in society after Savile and MeToo where production companies have either seen the error of their previous ways or at the very least don’t want the bad publicity.

Surely the net has to widen to the facilitators if we're going to reduce this kind of thing. Who made those taxi calls, who was managing his account etc. It might be even harder to get something to stick but it could still have an effect. Let the world know what a toxic brand they are.

Yeah, someone thought Big Brother’s E4 spin-off and that Radio 2 show were important enough that they’d subject girls and young women to this rather than just bring in Simon Amstel or whoever and they really need to provide some real answers. Although I’m guessing none of them are in post anymore and they’re currently retired or raking it in in the private second.
Or possibly sat in the House of Lords.

He's purposefully ingratiated himself with the type of crowd where many will defend him blindly and where allegations can be excused as the MAINSTREAM MEDIA coming for him.
Whether or not he did that proactively to try and prepare for something like this, or if it's just a coincidence we can't be sure, but personally it feels like the former.
