It’s not even the age thing that gets me. I work with a lot of women in their 20s who are assistant execs or PR execs, and I thank god they weren’t around when Russell Brand was about. By the sounds of it they would have just been fed to him.

16: allowed to vote (signal might be noisy but is a balance to the aged vote and starts the process of the state wanting to hear your voice)
18: Everything else (booze, marriage, consent). Statutory consent decriminalised for 16 & 17.

I scanned the thread but I don’t think anyone mentioned the “half your age plus seven”* rule yet. Can we just codify that into law?
Not sure how widely known it is but it was certainly an unwritten rule among my mates in the late 90s/early 00s.
*Is it creepy or not? Take the age of the older person, halve it and add seven. If they date or shag anyone younger than that, that’s creepy.

Again I don’t think it’s about an age gap and I think is a danger here of being ageist or discriminatory in other ways to start just saying it’s always nonceing if the gap is over a certain amount. People should be free to live their lives if they’re doing no harm. It is again all about the point at which someone is mature enough to consent. After that whatever works and c’est la vie.

It's shocking it's taken this long to come out, when it has been known about for so long. I called him out directly for being guilty of abusive behaviour (and generally a massive c**t) over on the old place. He abused a friend of mine. I won't share any of the specifics, but she had to deal with him because of her work, and didn't report it because of his power. She knew even if believed (and it would be likely she would) nothing would happen to him, but it would likely have negative ramifications for her.
Utter utter scum.

It’s always interesting to me how you can’t really see the identity of a decade until you get a bit of distance from it. I saw something on Twitter about how the Noughties is starting to have that moment now, and it’s a decade really identifiable with a sort of bullying nastiness. Brand was a big part of that vibe but so much from that era - Big Brother, Bo Selecta, Nevermind the Buzzcocks, Jeremy Kyle, Ricky Gervais - just feels really mean spirited and unkind. It’s not a decade that’s ageing well at all. Plus those terrible boot cut jeans. Urgh!  |

Yeah to be clear I was being a bit glib, I’m not saying a 50 year old should be thrown in jail for shagging a 31 year old, or that that’s always creepy by default. But I do think there’s a certain elegance to the “half your age plus 7” discussion, because it leads into considering how even a 2 or 3 year age gap quite rightly feels huge when it’s between 2 teenagers, whereas in consenting adults it’s trivial.

Voting at 16 and an older person being allowed to have sex with you at that age is a very different thing. Sex the person is vulnerable to the position of power of the person, the consequences are completely different and it’s pretty unlikely you’d need the support of your friends and family if you vote the wrong way whereas for a 16 who’s had sex/been groomed there’s a whole load of signs and victim blaming to deal with..
Joining the military is also different, that’s a state issue but also assumes joining the military at 16 is somehow ok.
