the ending of the substance was a very much a shift in tone, someone could of started throwing custard pies during that bit
Rewatched: Morktal Kombat (2021)
its good they want more of 15 tone than some 12a shit. The characters are not great apart from Kano, he steals the film and the actor is having a lot of fun. The main character they made up is quite bland but the film is fun action film. Needed more theme song music

Ghost Busters: Frozen Empire (Sky)
It was ok I guess. Some parts were pretty good, others were annoyingly slapstick and silly. I didn’t really care about the family drama bits, and there wasn’t enough build up to the big bad to really make it feel a threat. I probably liked it more than the last one but that’s not saying much.

I know the new made up protagonist was pretty dull but I think people were way too had on that Mortal Kombat movie. It had some fun stuff and authentic fatalities in it. |

Let me add my 2 cents re: The Substance. I thought the whole thing was stylized like a gore-comedy (goremedy?). I GLOL-ed a few times, especially at the end. Some scenes were a bit too long for my liking though. Just one thing that bugged me in the story. I know it is a fantasy story and the characters' acting is illogical, but what did the "original" person get from the whole thing? Why not terminate after the first cycle? . Anyway I'd give it an 8 (flies) out of 10. Worth watching, but could be a bit shorter. |

Venom: The Last Dance in a cinema
Pretty much what to be expected from a Venom film, it won't make anyone a fan I would imagine but this instalment (rammed with British actors being Americans) is certainly the funniest of the three. The plot doesn't make a huge amount of sense really but Eddie and Venom dicking about trying to get to New York kept me entertained. Is this really the last dance for Venom? well obviously not given the post credits scene.
Time Cut Netflix
It's Totally Killer done not as well, this time instead of the protagonist trying to stop her Mum's friends being killed when accidentally flung into the past of 1983, the protagonist is trying to stop her sister and her friends being killed when accidentally flung into the past of 2003.
There's some differences but the gist of the film is pretty much the same with a surprise or two but it's certainly not as good a film.
Only worth a watch if you're bored and want a very mild and mostly bloodless "horror" but if you've not seen Totally Killer, or even if you have, you'd probably be better watching that if you've got Prime Video.

Wild Robot With the kids (4 and 6). I didn't really know what to expect story wise / style, except that you all thought it was amazing. My kids were pretty mesmerised, and the animation is sooo gorgeous. The action/problem to overcome/resolve at the end I thought was a little bit Hollywood/contrived, but didn't detract from overall 9/10. My 6 year old was quite scared when the death robots turned up. Maybe could have been a little shorter - it's long for a kids film. |

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024) ***
The tone of this film is pretty good, crunchy fun; it’s not unenjoyable spending time with the cast, even if scant few of them are given even the barest bit of characterisation. And Ritchie directs the action well. What it’s not, though, is particularly exciting or tense; there’s never any genuine sense of threat or a feeling that our crew won’t succeed. So in the end it’s fun but forgettable.

I absolutely love this film. It manages to hew closely to Western tropes whilst also putting a very distinctive spin on them. A few memorable, varied characters, played by great actors, get into a series of duels; the simmering tension and backstory is well-handled, but the star here is Sam Raimi and his gonzo direction. Crash zooms, Dutch angles, extreme close-ups; he pulls out all the stops to make each encounter vibrant and unique. Fantastic. I might take a star of Ministry and stick it on here, actually.

Venom: The Last Dance (2024) ***
Did you like the other two? You'll probably like this then. Plot-wise, it's leaning more towards the over-stuffed and messy Let There Be Carnage than the leaner first film; and still, despite it obviously being the series' highlight, they don't quite find enough bonkers, odd couple, double act stuff for Tom Hardy to do with Venom. But the action is very well executed, it's funny when it needs to be, it's satisfyingly gnarly at times, and I was surprised at how emotional it does actually get. YMMV, but I enjoyed myself.

In a Violent Nature (Shudder)
Imagine a Friday the 13th sequel, but where the camera follows Jason slowly and silently plodding through the woods for a third of the running time as he searches for his next victim and that's pretty much the premise behind this. I see what they were going for with the gimmick, but it basically just pads out a 60 minute film to the full 90.
Kills were gory and reasonably inventive, but it felt sterile and really quite charmless. Much like Terrifier, it's an attempt to reinvigorate the slasher genre with a new monster, but (again, like Terrifier) seems to completely miss the point of what made many of those films fun to watch in the first place.
Competently made, but ultimately just a bit boring.

Bloody Muscle Bodybuilder In Hell (on Shudder)
A Japanese bodybuilder and his ex-girlfriend go to investigate a haunted house with a psychic. There's a ghost there, and things happen.
It's a fantastic title for a movie. But the actual thing is like someone who just watched Evil Dead and tried to remake it on video with a quarter of the budget and talent. There's some charm to that, and some of the effects are neat, but I wouldn't call it a must-see.
Still, the whole thing is just over an hour long, and I could think of worse things to watch on Halloween.

Wife is a bonafide big girl's blouse with horror films, so I decided to attempt to sort that issue this Halloween by throwing her in at the extremely shallow end of the pool.
It's been a good 10-15 years since I've watched this to be honest. Still thoroughly entertaining, packed with great moments, humour and poignancy.
That final shot of the house folding in on itself is still amazing 42 years on.
Wife enjoyed it and was thankfully not traumatized.

Heretic - in a cinema
It being the 30th anniversary of id Software's Heretic here comes the film adaptation! Strangely it doesn't feature lots of monsters being shot in a dark fantasy setting but Hugh Grant menacing two young Mormon girls who are trying to convert people, it's a weird change to the scenario that's for sure.
To say too much would be spoilers but you will learn some things, lots of possible origins of religions, litigation featuring some songs and what Monopoly pretty much shamelessly ripped off. You'll also hope Reed's (Hugh Grant) prediction for something in 1000 years is very wrong.
It's a very, very talky film, this is an A24 production not Blumhouse, so may not be the sort of horror if you want blood and guts but it's damn good.
Pretty much rests on the performances of the three leads and they all do very well, Hugh Grant's relatively recent revival to doing stuff you'd not expect shows how good he is and Sophie Thatcher and Chloe Easton are good too.
So a spoiler that will mean absolutely nothing to anyone who hasn't seen it. MAGIC UNDERWEAR! |

The boys choice for tonight’s Halloween film. I haven’t seen it in a few years but it’s great. Love the soundtrack and the while dreamlike aesthetic. Damn creepy.
