Your problem is you're asking questions that the writers never even considered.

Vivarium - 8/10 Oooo, this was a nice surprise, and strangely the second film in a couple of days that I've watched themed around cuckoo behaviour. A young couple are house hunting and go to view a house in a very strange, identikit neighbourhood. Things get weird... It's kinda Truman Show meets Cube vibes, a sci-fi/horror blend which is also very much its own interesting thing. Recmmoend. I watched this film tripping and it blew my effing mind!

Basically stop asking questions about how things came to be in franchise films. Keep it to yourself.

I'm actually going to stick it on again shortly as I really liked it and have it in my Apple library.

Its really good (apart from the one, enormous glaring logic hole I really struggled to get over). Exactly the kind of interesting, low budget movie I'm always blathering that people should be making.

Hold on, is Vivarium set after Covenant or Resurrection?

Hold on, is Vivarium set after Covenant or Resurrection? After Covenant. It's about Newt's dad and how he was a chief medical officer for Weyland-Yutani.

Wicked Little Letters - 7/10 Can't say I'm a huge fan of Coleman usually (unpopular opinion seeing as everybody else seems to adore her vanillaness), but she's got a couple of great scenes in this where the joy of swearing takes over. Great performances from Buckley and Spall too and a great "wait a second... Is that Tim Key?!" moment. It was quite cool seeing some of my local area done up like the 1920s.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes - 7/10 Looks great, although a bit lacking in polish in places. Noa looks incredible, but some of the lesser characters had a bit of lower detailed NPC vibe to them and faster paced movement felt a bit off. Still a head and shoulders above anything in the other ape themed CGI-fest I watched recently. It's all a bit unnecessary really. It was nice to be back in the world for a while, but felt like it was all just setting the stage for the inevitable sequel.
I'll have to rewatch Alien³ next so I can keep things on topic...

Someone’s going to have to do a retrospective of the Tim Burton Planet of the Apes at some point.
Bagsy not it.

Indeed. I saw it some weeks ago when it was on BBC 1. Mark Wahlberg will always be the worst choice. For everything.

I thought the film was ok. Amazing production/ape design and Tim Roth as an angry monkey. But then the ending was just sooooo fucking dumb that I refuse to ever watch it again.

Deepstar six - 6.5/10
A lot better than I thought it would be. Part of the ‘wave’ of undersea sci fi horror films of the 80s directed by the guy who did the first Friday 13th. The effects are terrible but charming, the acting is solid for the time and it copies a lot better movies note for note, hence it’s very watchable.
A double bill of this and Leviathan would be a good time 😊

Someone should do a retrospective on the TV show. It's actually fairly decent, if dated by todays standards. A bit of a will they catch those damned humans.

Is it along the same lines as Safety Not Guaranteed? I really enjoyed that film. Doesn't look like Vivarium is on any subscription services, but it's only £3.99 on Apple TV so might buy it and watch it later.

The Irishman (Netflix) Took my sweet time before viewing this, that's for sure! I enjoyed it as a movie (love these mob stories), but I've got to admit I found the de-ageing CGI a bit lot jarring. It's one thing to have such a feature to a small segment of a movie and another to de-age most of your characters most of the time. It comes to a point where you don't really know who's acting, the actor or the computer and frankly it doesn't bode well for me. Sure, we've come a long way and the technology behind it has improved enormously, but I cannot shake the feeling it will not end well for the medium artistically.
The movie itself felt a bit long and could probably use some trimming, but to its credit, I sat though it in one evening, even though I rarely watch a movie in less than two sittings, so it must have done something right.
You'd probably enjoy it if you like mob stories, Scorcese and the huge actors he assembled here.

That the people who get trapped just don't instantly kill the cuckoos. I would have hit that little fucker with my car and then reversed over it. I may have missed something but nothing actually compels them to look after it other than 'a mothers instinct' which is a bit lame

Evil does not Exist
A film that has got under my skin over the last few days. A talent agency decides to build a glamping site in an out of the way rural Japanese village which is met with strong resistance from the locals who see through the scheme for what it is. I guess it’s partially a film about perception and prejudices with the city folk being ignorant of rural life and the rural folk coming across as condescending and stand off ish. In between are I guess this middle class who are sent away to do the cities folk doing but come across as people who are lost, don’t really know themselves and have no real convictions or backbone , people who will decide to live in the countryside on a whim of romanticism (and by default people who probably decide to what this film).
Over time bridges are built but this romanticism of rural life is up ended with a very harsh reality. I’m not sure what I feel about ending, it feels pretty abrupt even if the seeds are sown through out. I guess I was so drawn in by this slight study of different groups it threw me a little bit as what the fuck but it’s one I been thinking about at work for a few days. Enjoyed it.

Civil War - 9/10 Slow start, but the second half is fantastic and it ends brilliantly. Garland might state its not politically based on anything or biased, but it was quite clear to me that the president is what could have been if Trump stayed in office and went into full dictator mode (he even uses similar speeches). Also the Jesse Plemons character is clearly based on your average gun toting, America loving, red blooded racist republican. Great movie.
The Watchers - 7/10 Very entertaining and I'm a sucker for the lore in these types of movies (no spoilers). With a better director and a bit more nastiness it could have been very good indeed. For a first time directorial effort from Ishana Shyamalan, she shows promise.

Blink Twice - at a cinema Directorial debut from Zoe Kravitz, which applies a very heavy dose of Get Out to #metoo. Naomi Ackie plays Frida, a young financially struggling woman that ends up bumping into billionaire Slater King, played by Channing Tatum, and invited to spend time with him and his friends out on his island. Lots of drug and booze fueled partying follows, but something else is going on to all of them on the island that they can't quite remember... It's a little slowly paced, despite a short running time, taking a while to get going. The tone is also so like Get Out that it feels like it is chasing the coat-tails of that film a lot. But, it is still an enjoyable time and gets nasty when it needs to. At times it is very on the nose and a tad predictable, but there are some smart, interesting choices throughout that elevate it above what it could have been. A few funny moments dotted throughout. I particularly liked the lamp shading of the stupidness of going along with these men to the island. A clever joke playing on both genre conventions and the real world. Wouldn't say I loved the film, by liked it a lot and definitely has me interested in seeing what Kravitz does next. I really enjoyed this. Having a trigger warning and "where to get help" at the start seems like the start of a bad trend where every film has one. That's what the certificate rating is for, surely? why is there still no spoiler button on this forum?
