While all you up to date hipsters are watching alien romulus, I went to Netflix and watched Atlas.
Generic as, but ok enough to see all the way through.
Titanfall rip-off with j-lo and some ok and some ropey cgi.
Filled two hours of time and wasn't too painful to watch.

Alien Covenant
Watched this after enjoying Romulus. I've seen it before but in the cinema and didn't watch it again as I hated it.
Well a few years on I still hate it. The starts not too bad but when we meet David again and it just goes down the toilet.
Cgi is awful and there's not much to shout about in any shape or form.
I'll do the fingering / 10
The more I think about it alien isolation continues to be the best "alien" output since Aliens.

Jackpot! - Amazon Prime
The original script was called "Grand Theft Lotto" but unsurprisingly Rockstar said fuck off so it got renamed. Imagine Paul Feig doing a comedy version of The Purge and that's pretty much this film.
Awkwafina is Katie a returnee to LA in 2030 not knowing there's a lottery in the city that whoever wins gets a vast fortune but only if they stay alive until sundown. Every other lottery player gets the chance to kill the winner and gets the prize themselves, the only restriction is no guns. Katie accidentally wins $3.6 billion and is set upon by most of LA, her only help is John Cena's Noel a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle obsessed lottery protection agent who'll keep her alive for 10%.
It's fairly silly stuff and certainly not Feig's best but it's entertaining enough as long as you don't think about the premise too much, not allowed to use guns well what about lots of other things like bows then? Er, ignore that even though a lottery branded crossbow turns up in a post-credits scene.
Worth watching but don't expect Spy 2.

The Coffee Table (Shudder)
A Spanish subtitled grim/dark comedy. Couple buy the aforementioned table and stuff happens.

Back from Alien: Romulus. Really liked that quite a lot. Most of the second half, once all the alien stuff kicks in, isn't as good as the first half, but then it knocks it up a gear again with a bat shit finale that I liked a lot.
Think a couple of people have said it isn't particularly scary, but I would disagree with that. As a series, it hasn't been scary since the first one. Prometheus and Covenant tried to bring scary back, but didn't really achieve it, but this does a much better job. The sound design in particular is excellent and that is evident right from the opening sequence (which strongly reminded me of the opening of The Exorcist). But even some of the visuals as well, such as the xenomorph birthing out of the cocoon, were really unsettling. Again, once it really goes to shit the scares disappear quite a bit, but that creature design at end gave me shudders. If you were coming into this completely blind, with no knowledge of the series before (maybe there are some kids out there), then I think this would seriously give you the creeps throughout.
Plot wise, it isn't anything special. It is interesting enough, but could have done with a bit more on why this crew wants to get away, beyond being told that the mines are shit and the company is a bit evil.
Overall, pretty good though. Definitely think it is a lot better than the recent two and better than Resurrection.
Looking forward to the next two in the series, Alien: Vulcan and Alien: Qo'nos.

Think a couple of people have said it isn't particularly scary, but I would disagree with that I don’t think it is really at all. The shitness deflates all the tension. There is also a difference between scary and gross and they tended towards the latter. Speaking of, one thing I didn’t mention in my wonderful review on the previous page is that one of the more hilarious ‘member berries seems to be ‘Geiger was a sex pervert, right?’ and they go all in on that to the point of having a giant, wall mounted fanny. It’s so ham fisted.

Its actually a good example of what I mean by having the tension deflated. I genuinely laughed out loud when the wall fanny killed the annoying Top Boy Extra

Free Solo - 7/10
Not even a whiff of Han Solo OR Free Willy... WTAF! Still a pretty decent documentary about an absolute mentalist who climbs all 3000+ feet of El Cap in Yosemite park without any climbing gear. It's excruciating watching some of the interactions with his girlfriend. God knows how they ever lasted more than a week!
It has some absolutely stunning shots and you have to respect the guy for his drive. Total fucking nutter, though.

It should probably have ended just after you defeat the first alien. Some of the other stuff like the hive could’ve been bonus maps or dlc or something. I think its brilliant but it doesn’t make narrative sense to continue much beyond there.

Alien Romulus
Very good with a lot to like. I personally did not like the end segment much or the final design and could have done without the full obvious homage line.
Nail on solid 7.5/10 for me. Quite the ride.

A clear example of padding where it really wasn't required and all the well deserved tension it created just turned into annoyance and exasperation of having to go through it all again.

Boy kills world
Not sure if I liked it but its good beers on saturday night sort of film, sometimes the camera work is bit OTT and not sure how they did it but it does not look good. Its quite predictable story and tbh the trailer makes it look better what the film is. It takes a while to get going

On Alien Isolation, former PC Gamer writer Andy Kelly's book on the game, Perfect Organism - An Alien: Isolation Compendium, is out in a couple of weeks. I backed it on a site called Unbound, so should be getting a copy. Have been meaning to replay it in anticipation, but hadn't got around to it until recently. Getting he PSVR2 adapter for PC has encouraged me to download it again and try out the VR mod, which was surprisingly very easy to organise.

Prometheus was by far the most ambitious attempt at doing something new with the Alien films. It's absolutely stacked with new ideas. But I don't think people liked the Engineers, black goo and lack of xenos. All of the films have people making daft decisions, they are just a particularly moronic breed of special cases in Prometheus. Edit – oops, page hadn't refreshed. Anyway, to do with comments above. I think that was the consensus at launch for sure. It was mine. I hated Prometheus when it came out, I came out wondering wtf it was. But on rewatches, and expanded lore stuff I thought it was actually brilliant! And was eager for more of that time line, those species, and that lore. The Covenant took a massive shit on it, fingered the crap out of the engineers corpses, and said have that. Now we are here. Haven't seen the new one yet. Probably wait till streaming. Edit: Should note that Prometheus does have big issues. Such as the actions of the entire cast possibly being some of the most idiotic in any film.

I’m hoping the new Alien TV series at least brings something new and interesting to the series. It is Noah Hawley so could be great, could be terrible.

Yeah, I loved that game, sooo tense, but then I though I'd pretty much beat it and, well, as you guys described. I lost interest and didn't play it again. Had a look at some playthroughs recently and seems like a lot was left...

Alien Romulus Was really looking forward to it but disappointed. It's basically a 'best of' alien, aliens and *gulp* resurrection, (done in the worst way) with kids. Probably didn't help that the audience was laughing all the way through it so my immersion levels were at an all time low, making me overly critical and questioning stuff, there are some pretty major plot holes and cringe moments... ...like how a bunch of kids can find an abandoned WY space station with their most important discovery and science division on board, literally above a WY colony.
Or tech stuff like why the earlier pulse rifles had auto aim so a teenage girl could kill a load of aliens with ease, but they took that feature out for trained marines. Were there budget cuts something??
Why on LV426 would a synth say 'that line' especially with nothing in his character showing that disposition.
Why they keep the eject for the cargo bay on 4 levers separated to different sides of the thing you were ejecting. Like can you imagine if the pilot on plane had to climb out on the wing of a plane to put an engine fire out? No? that's because they woud have a switch in the bloody cockpit...
And don't get me started on the uncanny valley of... Well, if you've seen it you know who I mean.
I kept thinking to myself 'who is this for', it went so far beyond fan service that it was cringe. As soon as they referenced Prometheus I knew it wasn't going to be saved. In hindsight, the only thing I can think is to introduce the franchise to a new generation - with it's 15 age rating, teen cast to make it relatable. People who probably haven't seen the main films, so they wouldn't see all the badly cookie cutter scenes, who might want to see more stuff in that universe and watch the older films and recognise the stuff they've seen in this. Visually it was pretty great, the planet rings acting like a giant sanding disc was amazing an some pretty exciting action, but that's all I thought it had going for it for me. It felt like it would have been an 'ok' alien game, where as Alien Isolation is a better bridge between alien and aliens and would have made a better film Another disappointing alien film/10

My favourite Alien experience was the Alien Wars thing at the Trocadero in Piccadilly Circus. It was immersive theatre before that was a thing. I think I was 12 when it happened, which for me was the perfect time for it as I was genuinely scared of the actors in full xenomorph costume. Did anyone else go?
There was a time where the Trocadero was the place where cool lived. That faded in adulthood as I was invited to an Xbox One launch event to find most spaces converted to cheap luggage shops and the arcades closed in favour of fish pedicure pools. And the cinema… rats in every aisle.

Which one had Idris Elba doing an ersatz southern accent If you can't be with the one you love love the one you're with/concertina farting noises love the one you're with/concertina farting noises His accent may be hokey, but he's relatable! He values old music like Crosby Stills Nash and Young! He constantly plays with his antique concertina - once owned by Stephen Stills! He is happy to casually bang Charlize Theron! It's Prometheus. Reflecting on the above, sometimes I wonder why I defend that movie. But I do have my reasons despite its massive flaws.

I think its brilliant but it doesn’t make narrative sense to continue much beyond there. I'll concede it's too long but relegating the hive section to dlc? No chance, that is one of the best parts of the game, certainly the scariest along with the first appearance in medical. It badly needs editing after that, and some earlier sections could be shortened. But I'm one of the few who was never that bothered by its length as I just loved being immersed in its world - so much so, I immediately started again on a no-death achievement run.

Giant vagina facehugger. That alone is why Prometheus is 10/10. Keep fighting the good fight brother! Ha! It's for me the most gorgeous since the original in terms of art design, though I admit I wasn't thinking of the giant vagina facehugger there. The Prometheus itself is absolutely stunning, as is the whole design of the structures on LV-223. I just wish Scott hadn't tried to have his black ooze and eat it by turning it into a monster movie. He should have just gone deeper into the origin stuff and stuck with the Engineer as the sole antagonist, making more of that - including sticking to Lindelof's original script a bit more, though I admit the dialogue between Weyland, David and the Engineer in that is exposition-heavy and clumsy, at least in the form I've read it. Still, we didn't need the vag snakes Fifeld, Millburn, mutant Fifeld etc. That's the stuff that detracts. I do really like it still, and it's top five for me.

I really enjoyed this. Some of the cinematography, alongside the booming audio was immense. I'd loved to have seen this in the cinema. I think it ranks alongside Rush. It's does what it says. Just tells a clear story, with a bit of drama. Some crashes. Done.

Twisters
Seems ages since I was at the cinema with both the wife and son and we'd been wanting to see this for a few weeks. Managed to grab a smallish screen showing before it left the cinema.
It was pretty good to be honest. Good fun with some impressive (and scarily) realistic (to my mind) tornado moments. Thought the cast were good as well. It played out very predictably, but hell, it was just a good cinema film. The boy announces at the end as we leave: "I never want to go to Oklahoma".
