Josh Hartnett is great. Just watch Penny Dreadful again instead. Or 30 Days of Night It’d probably be bad but I’m surprised that hasn’t been picked up for a series on a streaming service

Has any film that has had overly hyped twitter preview reviews ever turned out to be good? I'm shocked that people paid to give impressions on twitter would be uniformly positive. SHOCKED.

No Way Up (Prime)
This wasn't Jaws. This wasn't Alive. This was shit.
Spoiler, there was a way up.
Don't bother.

Behind the Mountains (at a cinema)
A Tunisian drama about a recently-released convict, who kidnaps his son and takes him on a trip up to the Atlas Mountains.
The guy also thinks that he can fly. Can he? Watch and find out!
Aside from the magical realism stuff, it's a drama about a father trying to reconnect with his boy. But then it takes another turn later on, which feels like a completely different movie.
I did like it, though. It just feels a bit messy, like he has ideas for three different stories and tried to cram them into one movie.

Alien
Have not seen the film in ages and it was good to see it again but I think Disney plus service have put up cut version (it seems they like to edit their content on there like some I know better big brother) The chest buster scene seem strangely edited and the scene were Ripley founds out the truth in the computer room seems heavily edited. Also it seems all words like fuck is now removed. I thought it might be my settings in the app but other films are fine. Its like they uploaded the ITV or American cable tv version
This is the danger of streaming future, some cunt can decided to edit films (or even remove episodes of tv shows as they are offended)
But the film stands up well as its classic film that aged well even with some of the effects, shame about the streaming version
9/10

Good to know about the edits. I was thinking of watching the series, as I've not seen Aliens or Alien3 in ages. Will get the first 2 on 4K disc rather than watch them streamed. 3 hasn't had a 4k release, annoyingly.

Given the horrible AI upscaling that Cameron doesn't seem to give a shit about on the 4K Aliens "remaster" it would probably be wiser to get the regular Bluray than it, cheaper too.

Good to know. Maybe should just grab the blu ray collection then (although Alien is definitely a film I would want to own on 4K, as it's one of my favourites). I do have the DVDs somewhere, but they will look a bit rubbish now.

No, the grittyness of the DVD will add to the atmosphere.

The Substance (at a cinema)
Demi Moore plays an ageing TV star who undergoes a procedure to make a younger, prettier, better version of herself, played by Margaret Qualley. It... does not go well.
This movie is absolutely fucking deranged. I haven't seen visual and sound effects this disgusting for a very long time, and it just keeps on amping up.
Look out for it, go watch it with your horror hound friends. You will have a very, very good time.

When a film festival is on... yeah, I might as well sleep there! I've got 30+ things booked over a period of about 2.5 weeks.

Alien 4K is one of the best examples of remastering done right. Looks absolutely amazing.
Aliens 4K uses AI upscaling that almost completely removes the original film grain and gives some of the actors a weird, slightly plasticy complexion. James Cameron has a terrible track record for 4K remasters and he insists on getting final approval before they're released. Terminator 2 4K is dogshit.
Expect most 4K re-releases to go down the AI route from this point on, as well. There's a bit of a shit storm going on about the new Jaws 3 4K release (and it's not even to do with how awful a film it is) where AI has been used heavy-handedly to magic up image detail that doesn't exist on the original masters. A lot of the 4K enthusiast crowd absolutely losing their minds right now.

Arthur The King
Just watched this on a plane.
Mark Wahlberg and a cute dog, it very nearly reduced me to a blubbering mess mid air.
Manipulative bollocks.
8/10 (something in my eye)

Slow (Mubi) - 9/10
Beautiful and super interesting film about a hetero dance teacher who starts a relationship with an asexual man. Apparently, 1-2% of people are asexual which is a wild statistic given I've not knowingly met such a person. Which is really the point of the film, to illustrate the feelings of asexuality so foreign to most of us. It's weird watching the film rooting for this guy to bang this woman, when actually he - almost literally - doesn't give a fuck.
Highly recommend if you like things like Before Sunrise, Normal People, In The Mood for Love, etc.

Alien Romulus It's pretty shit. Basically a mix-match of the first two movies, with some elements thrown in from both (and I think I spotted some Alien 3 references as well?) for good measure. Only, as far as retreads go, this one was worse than the originals in every conceivable way. Every character is unlikeable, the jump scares pretty cheap, the references too telegraphed. And visually it's too clean, not nearly gritty enough. There are some amazing space panoramas though, I'll give it that much. The last scene with the human creature are... well, let's say if they wanted to make it repulsive, they did a good job with that. It goes past uncanny valley and jumps over it with a triple somersault. It's not good, but it was at least very gross. Not sure if that's a good thing. The director talked Alien Isolation as an inspiration, but I couldn't see how. At one point it did remind me a bit of Callisto Protocol though. Maybe you'll see it when you get to that point. Anyway, there are a couple nice action scenes, but not enough to save the movie. I'll say it wasn't quite a boring 2 hours. Cringeworthy, but not boring. There's at least that. 4/10

Well, it seems to be getting good reviews overall, so don't let me stop you from watching it. Maybe you'll like it better than me. I didn't entirely dislike it, but it did feel a bit like a waste of two hours.
Considering that 80s/90s revivals seem to be all the rage lately and yet mostly obtaining mixed results, what are our chances Beetlejuice Beetlejuice turns out actually good?

Alien Romulus - 7.5/10 No spoilers thoughts below but spoilering anyway just in case. Very enjoyable overall, looks fantastic and does a surprisingly a good job of building tension and dread. There's some nice world building at the start which I appreciated and would have liked to see more of in order to develop the characters a little better before the er, alien stuff happens.
In my opinion it hamstrings itself by doing too many references to the original two in reproducing shots and more in some cases. It's a bit unnecesary and took me right out of the film in two cases.
Overall though - it's good. Very watchable, but it can't get near the level of the first two. There's also some stuff that I was surprised I didn't hate while I was watching it too which was nice. Additional mild spoiler thoughts: It's obviously trying to mix the vibe or alien and aliens and does so successfully, but as a result there's weirdly little stuff in it that's just "people vs alien" as it's moving and escalating so quick. I came out of it thinking curiously little of the film has only the alien as the threat.
