Hadn't watched this in a while. You could say it's weird, but also very straight-forward. The best parts are all the fake movie trailers and variety shows, with Ghandi 2 still being the highlight for me. Weird Al's scenes and daydreaming parodies on the other hand, aren't much to write home about (not to mention they go on too long). The plot is super clichè, but I like how the entire movie keeps setting up jokes for later, and Kevin McCarthy isn't pulling any punches - never seen a guy having so much fun playing it as evil as possible.
7/10
Now I haven't watched that in centuries either, but I seem to remember The Stupids being a pretty similar kind of comedy?

Barbie ****
I had been avoiding it and went in with low expectations as something to watch on the plane but I really enjoyed it. Clever, funny, well written, and quite moving. It went a bit corporate/Hollywood towards the end, because of course, but on the whole it left a much better taste in my mouth than expected.

I haven't been watching many movies recently, but I just wanted to point out that The Prophecy 4 - The Uprising was actually good. I tried watching some of the later Underworld movies after rewatching the first two, but they were honestly just terrible. Not that there was much of a point to the second one.
Not so Prophecy 4. For some reason it has a good script, well-written dialogue, a progression that makes sense and doesn't mind killing off characters and moving forward at a constant pace. I'm tempted to say that it might have been better than even the original. You are not going to get Viggo Mortensen as Lucifer, but the protagonist was decent and his sidekick quite compelling. Oh, and no Christopher Walken either anymore, but it's not like he could save the third movie, so I wouldn't say that he was that vital to the series.

I think I only watched number one. Is it necessary to watch 2 and 3 to watch 4?

Since Dune is apparently leaving Netflix soon, i forced myself to get round to it at long last.
Loved it. The dragonfly helicopters were especially pleasing to the eye. Hopefully, it's leaving the service in preparation for the next one!
Really enjoyed it.

Underworld: awakening
I know they are not amazing films but they are guilty pleasure apart from the prequel 3rd one (also Micheal sheen is a massive creep and not talking about his character)
The films sets up better premise of the human world finding out about vampires and werewolves but throws it away in the first 10 minutes. It should of been more of that. Charles Dance always makes the film feel less trashy and Kate in the catsuit which helped to sell the film to be honest. The films are dumb fun, the usual popcorn action but its good to watch with beer or 5

Barbie
It was fun, and Robbie and Gosling really went for it. While the message is a good one, I found it all fairly straightforward save the speech which was great.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the one with Donald Sutherland in it)
Watched because of the recent passing of Sutherland.
It's brilliant. I think I slightly prefer the original overall, but it's not a 100% fair comparison, because they're very different movies. This is much more horrific, with the body snatcher screaming and pointing and all that. And one of the best endings of any movie ever.
Love the Nimoy part too, he's such a slimy piece of shit.

Watched Five Nights at Freddy’s last night (SKY)
Thought that the puppets were really well done but the movie was underwhelming

Then Inside Out 2 today (Odeon)
Not the same impact as the first one but still “totes emosh” for sure, I hate that phrase but it does seem appropriate here

Can confirm stage version was excellent. Really good fit for the format. The whole production was stunning. Seeing it next Sunday. What was the merch like? It’s the girls birthday so might be tempted to splash out.

Honestly, the merch is crap. There's not cute plushies or anything. It's just the stage play branding, which isn't particularly exciting, put on tote bags and posters and such.

Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey 2.
Ridiculous, over the top, and hilariously stupid. Had a fun time watching with the missus and her two teenage brothers.

@bongo
Btw, would deffo say worth watching the film close to your trip. The play has A LOT going on and I reckon hard to follow if you're not familiar with the source material.

She got a banging knitted totoro from the last one. And, yeah, we watched it last a few day’s ago mainly because the Mrs had merged like half a dozen movies in her head

Have they opened a Ghibli store in the UK yet? These things are deadly! www.kanpai-japan.com/travel-guide/donguri-official-ghibli-shops--- I had tried watching Fellowship of the Ring with both kids sometime last year, but the youngest gave up half way through as it was a bit too long and scary for him. Recently he's been into a bunch of fantasy games/books/comics stuff, so I gave it another go last night, and he absolutely loved it. (yay!) I explained a bunch of lore to him, cos he's into knowing how stuff works, and he's now decided that Elves are cool, but Dwarves are the best, and he wants to be a dwarf smith. I should have expected that given the ridiculously complex stuff he builds in Minecraft. Anyway, having recently struggled through Rings of Power and worked hard to convince myself that it's not too bad, *this* is still effortlessly awesome. As it was last year when I wrote about it then.

Fellowship is my favourite of the whole lot, including Hobbit and Rings of Power. It feels like the one where you’re most in the world rather that being swept along by events.

Eldest is 8, suspect he may be a year or two away still, some of the scenes eg Uruk Hai birth are pretty brutal.

Eldest is 8, suspect he may be a year or two away still, some of the scenes eg Uruk Hai birth are pretty brutal. He's 9 (and 2/3). He was probably around his 9th birthday when we first tried to watch it, but kids change a lot in a year or so. He's watched a couple of Jurassic Parks, the final Harry Potter movie and Rogue One etc.. in the meantime, which were darker than the stuff he'd watched before. I have learned from this forum that there's a massive difference in what parents consider suitable for different ages though, and also kids seem to mature at different paces, but also in sudden spurts. So it's kinda up to you and your knowledge of them. Also, it's quite a long movie, with quite a bit of lore and some long quieter moments, so it's probably as much about their attention span and ability not to get bored as it is about the orcs getting their heads chopped off.

I've had a clause inserted into my will which is that if any of my children watch the Peter Jackson films before they've read the book they will be disinherited. Also, if they then watch the Peter Jackson films and fail to bang on for the rest of their lives about how shit they are, especially on social media, they will be disinherited.

If you watch the film with the subtitles on, aren't you effectively doing both simultaneously?

Let's say Tolkien invented an incredible world in his imagination.
You, yes you, have been given a gift: you too can share this vision, but in order to do so there needs to be some kind of medium to communicate Tolkien's vision.
Tolkien used words, which were not always great, but which did convey the breadth and depth and scope of the world, and let your imagination fill in the blanks.
Jackson inserted himself as a filter, taking Tolkien's words (which were not always great) and superimposing his own imagination, heavily editing Tolkien's vision, filling in a few selected blanks leaving no room for your own imagination to do any work, ditching the remaining blanks, leaving the viewer with a world that was much smaller in scope.
It's like standing on a mountain top before a glorious view but instead of being handed polarised sunglasses you're made to wear a 2016 Rift CV1 VR headset.
