Patriot Games is not a good movie but it's still better than the book it's based on, Tom Clancy wrote some good, trashy reads but Patriot Games is just trash.

Killers of the Flower Moon - 5/10
I'm really on the fence as to whether I'd recommend it.
The story absolutely did not warrant the absurdly long runtime, therefore the runtime lessened the film's impact. Why don't certain film makers understand this, or wantonly ignore the fact?
Regardless, the story was relatively interesting and easy to follow, if a little cryptic on details at times, with the majority of dialog delivered in a southern US garble.
Performances were strong and authentic all-round. De Niro and DiCaprio carried the film, with De Niro's performance in particular being worthy of note, adding an insidious menace and charm to his character. Lily Gladstone played the "stoic native American" well enough, although she wears a blank expression for almost the entire film. Baffling that she got an Oscar nomination for this particular performance, as it hardly showcases her range as an actress.

10 Things I Hate About You, have been feeling quite nostalgic of late, still mostly holds up for a TWENTY FUCKING FIVE year old film

You don’t see Joseph Gordon-Levett in too much these days, which is a shame because I always thought he was a really decent lead.
You don’t see Julia Styles or Alex Mack much either, but I assume that’s because the red light in their palms started flashing.

Beverley Hills Cop: Axel Foley.

He's waiting for the next Oscar winning documentary turned feature film to star in with a weird accent to complete the trilogy.

I've always liked him as an actor, felt like I grew up with him in third rock, so it's always nice to see him in something new. Kind of feels like he was destined for big things and would take up the mantle/cowl after TDKR, but then that never happened.
He's still in a decent amount of stuff, but just never became the leading man he deserves to be imo.

I don’t get the vibe from his project selection that he particularly wants to be the traditional leading man

Yeah he doesn't seem interested in being a known quantity. He's a very good under the radar actor. He's been in some pretty big films but he's never really attempted the kind of leading man pic like Leo or something.
Slightly wonder if his time on 3rd Rock contributed to it.

Yeah looking at his wiki page it looks like he has other interests with his music company and other projects. Guess he’s just doing his own thing. Fair play, really.

Bottoms
I had read a couple of good reviews and like the girl from the Bear. I was expecting a female Superbad for the 2020s and it's kind of that, but it lacks laughs.
The plot is intentionally absurd, there's no real character development and stupid stuff happens to serve up jokes, but they mostly don't quite land. It's not ridiculous enough for an old fashioned 'high school comedy', like they held some punches, but it's also too silly to get invested in any of the characters enough for it to work as a rom-com or coming of age piece.
It's basically fine, never actively annoying or boring, just underwhelming.
6/10

Ayo Edebiri was ace in her role, but it just wasn't very funny for me. It also came across as hugely ad-libbed most of the way through and that very rarely works. The school jocks always in uniform and being dumb throughout did raise a smile, so points for that and Ayo being great as usual. 5/10

The Holdovers
A big warm hug of a movie with the always brilliant Paul Giamatti.
Not entirely sure why it was shot in 1.66:1 aspect ratio, but I guess it kinda worked given the 70’s period setting.
8/10

Bottoms just felt like it probably wasn't whatever the writers originally envisioned and has been watered down.
Can't decide whether that something was a more outrageous slapstick comedy, or a sharp satire, or a more relatable 'dramady'.
It's got elements of all. Weird little film.

Half Nelson
Ryan Gosling channeling his inner Ed Norton as a teacher struggling with addiction.
The performances were great but it did kinda drag. I didn’t like the way it was directed either. The narrow angle lenses and steady cam work that has all the hallmarks of early noughties movies.
Reminded me a little bit of c’mon c’mon. Different themes, but same energy.
6/10

Bottoms (Prime) - 3.5/5
Heathers style high-school comedy. It's extremely wacky and often hilarious but it's not as coherent as Heathers or Election or Mean Girls. Ayo Edebiri is a full on star though.
Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret (Prime) - 3/5
Sweet, nostalgic adaptation of the 'controversial' Judy Bloom YA novel about periods. The cast are excellent, nothing really bad happens, and it's all very cozy, but it's definitely aimed at people who were teenagers in 1970 rather than teenagers today, who would surely find it a bit tame.
The Hot Spot (Blu-Ray) - 3/5
Dennis Hopper directed, sweaty southern noir starring Don Johnson, Virginia Madsen and Jennifer Connelly. Johnson is a bit insipid but Madsen is doing the Sharon Stone thing way before Basic Instinct - there are two scenes where she's shaving her legs whilst on the phone and it's an extremely striking image. Jennifer Connelly is absolutely smoking hot and I feel dirty saying that but it's an irrefutable fact.
I kept waiting for it to go full Wild Things, but it never did.
The whole thing is a bit all over the place and feels like a wasted opportunity, I can't help but feel it needed a better director.
Great soundtrack.

I actually would question people saying 'ooh I only see big blockbusters at the cinema' it was such a lovely film to watch with a bunch of people. Great film.
