I know it's old but that should probably be spoilered.

Do they? I must have totally blanked that. I remember thinking it was great how they were just 2 people who were glad to have someone share their experience with. Hmmmm. Might have to rethink this.

I mean, the whole bit where she gets super jealous about him sleeping with the singer says more than anything else what the undercurrent of the whole film is

It's such an incredible film - one of my favourites.

It’s a good film but it felt a little xenophobic even at the time and hasn’t aged well in that respect. Similarly the nature of their relationship feels a bit creepier than I think was originally intended.

I remember finding Lost in Translation icky at the time, but I definitely should revisit it considering how many people like it.

Yeah, I definitely picked up on the mild xenophobia as I got older.
Never found their relationship creepy though - purely down to the age gap or am I missing something?

I have definitely blanked parts of it then because I remember thinking that I hoped they didn't get together as it felt much better as a kind of drunk uncle dynamic. If there was more to it then I've definitely no desire to revisit it.

It looks pretty creepy on paper, but I think the actors manage to sell it. It definitely would have been a lot worse if they'd ended up together in the end.

Also Johansson has come out since and said Murray made her extremely uncomfortable on the set and behaved inappropriately. Not full on #metoo but casting a 17 year old was perhaps not the greatest idea in terms of power dynamics.

And yeah, like I said, the comedy Japanese people take the shine off a bit. I still love the movie, but that could have been toned down.

She was 17? Christ that's...not good. Bill also definitely had that reputation by that point, as Wes Anderson had said both him and Hackman made Royal Tenenbaums difficult.
Raises questions about the director as well, really.

Damn, never knew that. Another film I love now tainted I mean, you don't have to swear off something you like, just because one of the people involved with it is a bit of a creep. Obviously it's your choice, but I can't think of many things I like where all the people involved have a reputation as pure as the white snow.

You can for sure separate the art from the artist, but in this case it’s a little tricky as the offscreen reality and onscreen dynamics kind of bleed into each other a bit.

I won't be swearing off it, I just find it hard to disassociate the art and the artist sometimes and I'm sure it'll crop up in my mind on future viewings.

Especially if a lot of it was based on Sophia's experiences in Japan. I would hope that Scarlett had someone assigned to basically be her "chaperone", so to speak. But, given it was 20 years ago, doubtful.

Godzilla Minus One (2023) - 80/100 - Saw this at the BFI IMAX and it was fantastic. Very well acted, looked great, superb sound design. It's a cracking monster movie on the one hand, and a moving observation on the impact of war (both those who fought, and those who didn't) on the other. Highly recommended.

I wish there were more films that showed off the location as much os LiT manages. It’s always disappointing when there’s a film has scenes from a city I love and then ask they do it’s film in the backstreets or other fairly generic feeling places.

Half the time that's probably because they're not actually in the city they're supposed to be in. Or at least not the main cast.

I know but the other half of the time when they really go places then I wish more would make more use of it.

There’s about a billion films that really do New York and San Francisco extremely well but they are heavily over-indexed.

I’ve only been to New York once but have seen enough movies to know when something is supposed to be set there but clearly filmed in Vancouver.

There was a period in the mid 00s where it felt everything was shot in Vancouver. Fantastic Four (the first one) was probably the most Vancouver film ever. That or Blade Trinity.

I remember the hubbub when X-Files changed from Vancouver to LA.
Also coincided with the show getting shit, but whether that’s LA’s fault or not is a mystery.

Sounds like a mystery for the X-Files
