The Apartment is an excellent Billy Wilder film that was unusual, given its subject matter, featuring a magnetic Shirley MacLaine, worth adding to any list Think they have been mentioned already but Ace in the Hole and Treasure of the Sierra Madre are also terrific

The Apartment really takes a left turn for a screwball comedy

Yup, big time, but you really feel the impact as a result.
I'm a big fan of bittersweet in my TV and Films

Godzilla 2014 (Netflix)
I'd started Peter Jacksons King Kong but wasn't feeling it so thought this was a safer bet for my kaiju fix. This version has Aaron-Taylor Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe and another couple of familiar faces.
It's a stunning film to look at but fuck me if it isn't hard to see at times. My greatest problem though is that every time you think something cool is going to happen the camera pans away and it feels like there's a better film happening somewhere else that we aren't seeing. The acting is fine but I found it a bit dull.
5/10

But objective speaking Jackson’s King Kong is the far superior film.

Does anyone else feel like Jackson's King Kong kinda did an Avatar and disappeared out of the public consciousness? It was a big deal at the time, and yet every time I see it on some free streaming service I'm reminded that it exists.

Free Fire
Took a break from the classics to watch this as I fancied something light and quick. I love the concept and it’s mostly good fun, but even though the whole point is that the entire film is a big shoot out, it still gets a bit tired. Pretty good though.

Saltburn - 8/10, just about.
Emerald Fennell's latest after Promising Young Woman. Simmering thriller set in and around Oxford Uni in 2006. Poor kid goes to stay with _very_ rich kid for the summer in his parents' ridiculous stately home. It's mostly delicious and very funny at times - the cast are clearly having a lot of fun, but a bit like PYW it peaks a bit too soon, the ending drags and ties up a bit too neatly. The final scene is a thing of beauty though. There is some sinister shit going on, but I think with a better script, or some better editing or maybe a shorter runtime the tension could've be ratcheted up which would've made it a classic for me. Well worth a watch though.

The Hunger Games: Excessively Long Subtitle That I’ve Forgotten
I was quite enjoying it. Seeing the games in the early days when it was a bunch of kids thrown in a pit with some sticks instead of a livestream of someone playing Halo 3’s forge mode was interesting, as was the very different dynamic of capital and districts compared to later.
But it’s also too long, and the very sudden shift in character development near the end is jarring. Given it’s clearly going to be another series it would’ve been better to cut the last half hour and turn it into the second film to explore it properly.

Anatomy of a Fall
I can see that it's objectively a quality film but many aspects of it rubbed me the wrong way - the excessive running time with too many lingering shots of people looking sad or pensive, the cliche overly-aggressive arsehole prosecutor and judge, and for some reason I just did not like the main actress. These are all my very personal taste, would still recommend it. Worked better as a study of a dysfunctional relationship than a courtroom drama I think.

I would have gone with Pepperfreeze. Much more original.
Saw Saltburn today and liked it a lot. Elements of it were a tad predictable, but still had plenty of moments to surprise along the way. Was also surprised at it being funnier than I expected. Sections of it were basically a (very) dark comedy. Richard E. Grant and Rosamond Pike in particular were having a good time in their roles as the aristocratic parents.
Really beautifully shot and the use of the tight aspect ratio worked exceptionally well.

Krampus - 7.5/10. Fast becoming one of my favourite Christmas films. Just enough cheese to make it fun and some good folklore. The boy protested that "it wasn't scary enough" but soon found it was just about right for him.

Same, was very interested in seeing Teeside on the big screen Have to make do with that one scene in Billy Elliot where they take a ride on the Transporter Bridge for no apparent reason. And - I'm sorry - it's "Teesside" 😉

Last time I went to Saltburn it took half an hour to find somewhere to park and the entire population of the north east was queueing for those cliff lift things.

That's a fair point, I'm most used to going in the off-season when there's no bugger around.

Quiz Lady - A mother disappears from a nursing home, and owes money to some of the nicest gangsters to ever appear on screen. Two estranged sisters must reunite to repay the mother’s debts, and get one of the sister’s dogs back. The elder sister videos the younger sibling watching a quiz show, and getting every answer right. And from there a plan is hatched.
It isn’t a laugh out loud comedy, except in a few places, but it is very enjoyable. And the family dynamics are really well play, but not dragged out for cheap emotional effect.

The Marvels.
I enjoyed that. It managed to make me LOL a few times. I thought it was all pretty great, until the ending which felt a bit underwhelming. I didn't notice the shorter runtime particularly, but it did feel a bit like something was cut out of the ending.
Kamala is great, and all the leads had good chemistry. Photon / Professor Marvel was a lot better in this than in Wandavision. I always liked Larson's Capt Marvel, but she's clearly having a lot more fun in this one. It's just a fun action comedy along the lines of Ms Marvel / Ant-man, etc...
There wasn't a post credits scene so my kids were pissed off about having sat there for 5 minutes for no reason, so they should have bumped the pre-credits scene to the mid-credits scene, and mid-credits one to the post-credits. (Mid credits one mostly passed the kids by as they weren't old enough to be familiar with the character, though at least one of them picked up on the music/door)

The Creator - 8/10
Solid sci-fi effort with a believable world. Kind of crazy what they achieved with the budget this had. Kind of loses its way in the last act, but still an enjoyable ride. Also one of those rare films with a child actor who isn't jarringly bad.

Watched (the still amazing) Leave No Trace again last night. Cried like a baby at the end again, obviously.
How is the film not a 10/10 for everyone? It is simply a fact that it has to be.
Also don’t know if he was nominated for Best Actor that year but he should have been.

Master and Commander 8.5/10
I knew of this from the time of its release, but somehow had never seen it - probably as at the time child #1 was imminent and cinema going was not on the agenda. Read a 20 year retrospective and it caught my interest.
Fantastic, really captured the cramped confines below decks and the frantic activity during battle above.
A brutal life of the average sailor evoked without sentimentality and was surprised at how young the officers started careers.
Picked up a bunch of the novels on kindle at a decent price so will dip in and see how I fare with those.
