Influencer A girl targets influencers to befriend in Thailand. A lot better than I expected. All shot in Thailand, and looks really good. The acting is fine, not great, but was interesting the whole way through. 7/10
Saw X The first time for a long time that Saw has had a decent narrative, and a decent return to form after the abysmal Spiral. This being some sort of a prequel with Jigsaw back probably helps, and I think more than ever they play him as a sympathetic anti-hero in this. A lot of twists and turns, but basically it is a Saw movie and you know what is coming. One of the better ones though I think. 7/10

The Killer
The new David Fincher thing, featuring Michael Fassbender as a boring assassin slowly but steadily losing his shit. It's not Fincher's best, but his standard is generally pretty high, so "not his best" is still generally a good watch.
A small trigger warning, though: there's a looooooot of Morrissey on the soundtrack. So be prepared for Morrissey when you go in.
8/10

Yeah, saw a tracklist the other day and he's really gone to town with Smiths songs! My missus absolutely loathes Morrissey, so I can't decide if it's worth watching this with her for the lols, or on my own so that I can actually watch the film without the constant complaints.

I had a lot of fun imagining Fincher's conversations with Trent Reznor, who does the usual ambient soundtrack with Atticus Ross.
"Ok ok Trent, I appreciate the offer for you to contribute more. Yeah look... Nine Inch Nails, it's not the vibe I'm going for."
"Yes yes, you won an academy award, I know."
"So for this scene I'm going to need you to tone down the industrial stuff so we can hear my man Morrissey."

Tbf I've met plenty of Americans of a certain age, for whom The Cure and Smiths are like weird mystical gods.
His fans are proper lunatics though. They're really happy to ignore the racism and paedo supporting.

To be fair, listening to The Smiths on repeat fits Fassbender's character like a glove. It's exactly the kind of music you imagine he'd be into.

Cocaine Bear
This film is such a weird thing for me. Back in the 2010s when The Cube was a Saturday evening ITV mainstay, I was part of a writing team and pitched a sketch where contestants on the show would have to enter the structure with a bear who had eaten nothing but cocaine for weeks with the aim of retrieving it hat. And the bear really likes the hat. Sadly, while the idea was well received, it couldn't be developed (part of the feedback was that we couldn't paint Phillip Schofield in a bad light...) So when I saw this film was coming out it really felt like someone had stolen my punchline. Obviously, just one of those weird coincidences, although I maintain my idea would have made a better film.
Character Actress Margo Martindale plays a dual role as a park ranger and the bear of the title (I assume). I have to admit I did laugh quite loud a few times, although I don't really think the film holds together especially well. The script falls just short of it being "So Bad It's Good" and it's weird how it paints cocaine as a comedy powder that kids can eat by the handful to no effect. Feels a bit of a waste to have both Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell in the film without them actually sharing any scenes too. I mean, surely they car shared?
5/10 - Piranha 3D remains the best example of this kind of film and I will fight anyone who says different.

Yes. Piranha 3D is also the best 3D film. Hugely slept on.

The Fog (1980) - 100 - Watch this every year, normally on Halloween itself, but this year the kids wanted to watch a proper horror. I enjoyed it as much as I always do, and it the verdict from them was positive (which was nice). They didn't find it overly scary, at least they said they weren't scared, but my son was clinging on to me during a few scenes and my daughter was making jokes as her way of coping to lighten the mood.
The Return of the Living Dead (1985) - 75 - Hadn't seen this in ages, but had forgotten how funny it was. There's some fantastic performances with some great lines, especially from the warehouse owner and manager. Some of the other acting leaves a little to be desired, but it still works. The effects are great and it's a nice love letter to the Romero series.

The film is loosely based on true events so more likely you were inadvertently influenced by that story.

It really was one of those cases of coming to a similar outcome but going a completely different way to it.

Trying to explain our Dennis to an American is just a mindfuck.
"So your Dennis irritated an elderly man? Our Dennis beat the shit out of effeminate kids... He would literally set his dog on them."

Hollow Man
Never seen this before. Was curious to see if it’s really as bad as reputed.
In some ways it’s not awful. It has that same b-movie science fiction energy that Robocop, Starship Troopers and Total Recall all have, and it’s quite compelling. It’s well paced, the effects hold up in a late 90s way, Kevin Bacon is obviously having a great time and it’s kinda fun…
…but unfortunately it’s really pervy, and you do get the strong sense Verhoeven is living out his invisibility rape fantasies on screen. It’s also completely devoid of any kind of social satire unlike his other films.
Verhoeven supposedly hates it and it was the last Hollywood film he made. I can’t help but wonder if it’s more that he didn’t like what he revealed about himself with it. Rape is certainly a common theme in his films and it really feels fetishised here in particular.
So yeah. While there’s some fun to be had here, it has an unintended darkness that really makes it unpleasant to watch.

I love hollow man, and now I’ve been labelled 😩
But then I always just saw it as a high concept slasher homage with great performances. Not watched it for years though so may give it another watch.

It has three separate sexual assault scenes. I think that’s one more than I Spit on Your Grave.

Hmm, you may be right. Whats rapey in robocop, total recall and starship troopers though?

Flesh and Blood got a bit rapey for no good reason IIRC.
/edit As in it did absolutely nothing for plot development, not that there's a good reason to get a bit rapey.

.But the thing that absolutely fucked me off, and will continue to fuck me off until the day I die: Margot Robbie got her kit off and showed everything but fucking DiCaprio and some of the other cunts in it used body doubles just for their arse. I cannot tell you just how much I absolutely hate that kind of one sided sexist "expect the women to show everything but the blokes can keep their dignity" shit. Showgirls is OK though

And another two honeytrap sex-killings in the second half of the film. (I covered it at uni. 'Orrible film).

The poltergeist (2015 - Amazon FreeVee)
Decently creepy, but otherwise brain dead fun horror film. Really really awful dialogue.
8/12 Bourbon creams.
