I think it gets worse as you get older and then the 'adult fear' kicks in. Poltergeist 3 is definitely more of a scary horror* movie if youre making a night of it. *and underrated I've never seen 3, just 1 and 2. Cheers I'll check it out

Poltergeist is almost a kids’ horror film until the mirror sequence. It’s very tame up to that point and then suddenly pulls that out the bag. I don’t know whether it was done to make the rating higher or whether it was intentional to be extra impactful, but it’s pretty jarring.

Old is so strange. MNS must realise how bad the script and acting is when he's writing and directing it, so I can only assume it's deliberate. The acting is far worse than I remember in Sixth Sense or Unbreakable. He's got some amazing actors in Old, one of which, Gael García Bernal, insists on repeatedly referring to the probabilities of things occuring because he's an... actuary. Ehrm what?!
I can understand entirely why someone would absolutely hate the film and yet I quite liked it. I full on hated The Happening though without a so bad it's good feeling, so really, pick your poison.

I've been thinking about watching this with my eldest. My wife has a massive hang up on it though as it terrorized her as a kid. I keep on telling her its not that bad, but she won't listen. It's really not very scary for grown ups. I had similar memories but it's fine - and he loved it, nowhere near the level of Stranger Things S4 etc. Which remains our benchmark for if it'll scare him.

Next up, The Watcher in the Woods, which gave me nightmares for months. Time to face my fears imo

Seriously, the mirror scene is intense even by today’s standards. It was another of those that was heavily edited for the TV version and when I watched the full fat version recently I was quite taken aback.

Next up, The Watcher in the Woods, which gave me nightmares for months. Time to face my fears imo I watched that when I was 6 or 7 with my sister and the girl next door, and it properly shat me up. Didn't help we lived opposite a dean/woodland and I would go to sleep at night with trees swaying just across the road, my imagination running wild at what was out there. Walking the neighbour home after (in the dark) was a frightful experience I still remember. 20 years later I was off sick on day watching TV in bed and it popped up in the schedule. Watched it thinking it would be tame and I'd laugh at my old self, but no, it was still ridiculously haunting. To this day it's the #1 film I think of when I think of "scary" films.

I saw it at the cinema so must have been 9 or 10 maybe? Terrified me. It's on Disney so will def show the boy. He seems to have a strong stomach (didn't seem to bat an eyelid at the mirror scene last night).
Edit: Just checked, 1980 release so I was the same age as you!

It was another of those that was heavily edited for the TV version and when I watched the full fat version recently I was quite taken aback. I've either traumatically blocked that from my memory, or I've only ever watched edited version. I need to remind myself later on. Poltergeist 2 scared the crap out of me. I remember insisting dad let me stay up and watch with him. I wish I hadn't. It stuck with me for years. The old man walking around (the shopping centre?) and just being menacing without really doing anything creeped me out. Wait, did P2 have a tooth floss scene that mirrored (lols) the mirror scene from the first one?

Is Shyamalan's stuff more bad than good or more good than bad? Think his first 4 range from good to passable, then he goes dreadful until Split and he's sort of turned a corner? I think if you meet the films halfway and just accept their insane and/or terrible premises halfway then the drama of whatever is going on can be good fun. I think his biggest weakness is that he doesn’t seem to be able to let things go unexplained. So often it’d be better if the films just presented themselves as “X is happening, deal with it” but he rarely lets that be enough. Like in Old I think it would be a more satisfying film if it just ended as the adult-kids dove into the water. Just dive and cut to black none of the epilogue

Siringo (1995) - This is made for TV garbage with the most interesting thing they seem to completely ignore is that Siringo was an actual detective with the Pinkertons and pioneer of working undercover which would see him infiltrate Butch Cassidys gang. That would have made a far more interesting film. 2/10.
Any Bullet Will Do - Low budget western about a bounty hunter tracking his brother. Despite the premise this is about as by the numbers as you can get and the only real positive is a few shots of the snowy Montana landscape. 2/10.

Don’t Look Up
I feel like there could be a fun 90 minute 90s comedy in here but instead its an hour longer than that and is so busy trying to get every Hollywood liberal they can on screen that they whole thing really outstays its welcome.
There are nice scenes and lines along the way and the premise is a good one its just such a massively ham-fisted execution.
6/10

The Suicide Squad
Been waiting for this to drop on a streaming service for a while and as it just arrived on Prime I gave it a watch.
It's great fun. The opening was brilliant and there were moments where I was genuinely having a good old guffaw out loud. The pacing was a bit odd though and there were times that the momentum seemed to flag (pun intended) a bit and it got a bit aimless. Really picked up again towards the end though.
I don't know what Gunn's plans are with Suicide Squad stuff but I would happily take another like this. The only real negative point I have to make is not enough Nathan Fillion, but I could say that about anything he pops up in.
Obligatory arbitary score: Beach full of dicks / starfish

Temple of doom - 8/10
It’s still great, yeah it’s a bit culturally insensitive, but it’s of its time. The set pieces are incredible and it flies by. Eldest Daughter loved it too. Last crusade next which my daughter is looking forward to as it has river pheonix in it and she has recently watched stand by me.

It puzzles me a bit that Raiders doesn't get nearly the same flak that ToD (deservedly) gets in terms of racial insensitivity. It's pretty dodgy!

I guess the difference is that ToD is completely a white saviour narrative through and through. Plus, the more explicit racial bits we are supposed to be laughing with. You change the racist bits in Raiders and it wouldn't really effect the film. If you tried to change the racist bits in ToD, you would have something that is tonally very different. Plus, ToD is still a shit film even if you ignore the racism.

I did love the Nazi monkey doing a little Sieg Heil, it was so cute!
That monkey got what it deserved in the end, though.

Other than a bit of yellowface at the beginning, is Raiders actually racially insensitive?

Other than a bit of yellowface at the beginning, is Raiders actually racially insensitive? Having a Welshman play an Arab isn’t ideal (I was surprised they brought him back for that new one) and I think generally those scenes are full of tropes and cliches, but it’s much better than something like Taken 2 which is much more recent and a thousand times more racist.

They are pretty cringe when you watch it now. They aren't really that important to what is going on though and could easily be removed. With ToD though, the film plot is literally "white man saves Indian villagers unable to save themselves".

Oh yeah. I think the power of the movies (and the fact ive been watching them for literally as long as I can remember) has convinced me he actually is an Egyptian who just plays an irrascible, racist old welshman
