My Bond will forever be Roger Moore, the first 007 film I saw at the cinema was "The Spy Who Loves Me" which clearly influences that plus it spawned a love that continues to this day of Lotus Esprits.
Moore was clearly enjoying himself in the role and so was the audience.

The Craig films are good on their own (except QoS which is just bad) but the attempts to weave it all together into some quintology after the fact was lame. Casino Royale was great but also a reaction to how Bourne changed spy thrillers, then with Skyfall they went āhmm, letās make something a bit more Classic Bond againā, then Spectre they really leaned into the reboot idea and retconned stuff that didnāt make sense. And then No Time To Die blew it all up (literally).

My guilty secret about Casino Royale, is that I almost never keep watching it beyond the poker game. Mine is just that I donāt really like it. Iāve never actively rewatched any of the Daniel Craig ones beyond lazily catching a few minutes if they are on. I think they badly suffer from being episodic and are generally just really boring. Even though most/all of the Brosnan movies are worse, itās my least favourite bond era.

Because the Bonds I was first introduced to were Moore and then Bronhom was in the cinema when I was young I always associate a level of camp with Bond that Craig has never delivered. Even though moving to something grittier was the right decision after Bourne and 9/11 made everything like this more serious.
Craigās films are fine but theyāre very much catch 20 minutes of on ITV2 type movies rather than anything Iād activity watch again.

Casino Royale might be the only Bond film that I really like. There are a few others that are ok.

To be honest any film that has over the top product placement (and specially in the tech market) will date more. Sony are the worst for it. Every film and series is plugging their latest doodad and whoever will write them a cheque. Iām watching Twisted Metal right now and you know theyāve got to drive through a mall that has a Foot Locker in it.

And the best Bond movie was that Hank Scorpio episode of The Simpsons.

To the point that itās news when he switches from Aston to BMW or Rolex to Seiko to Omega. The Seiko from Octopussy was so dope Casio cloned it and are still selling it today.

Monkey Man 8/10 Pretty fantastic for a first directorial attempt by Patel. Some fantastic set pieces and it's a rare action film that actually has an engaging story.
Love Lies Bleeding 7/10 I'm a sucker for any 80s nostalgia in films, but the setting feels a bit half arsed in this, until they almost have to remind you what they're doing with a bit of Berlin wall news. Stewart is decent, O'Brian is a stand-out and Harris' hair extensions steal the show. It's quite tense in places, can be pretty gruesome and the world they've created feels realistically grubby (like you need a shower after spending time in it)

Anatomy of a Fall 8/10
Iād deliberately avoided reading too much about this but itās not a psychological thriller as I think of them. More a drama with a bit of a mystery. Itās good and all the performances are great.

Sometimes I feel about dying 6/10 Weird slice of life indie film starring Daisy Ridley playing it meek, mousey and emotionally shut off. Serviceable if a little plodding. Occasionally gave pause for thought and the performances were good.

Dracula: Voyage of the Demeter (Prime)
It's Dracula! On a boat! That's the plot!
It's actually pretty good though. I'm not going to be rushing out to buy a 4k steelbook of the thing, but I was solidly entertained for the 2 hours of watching it. You could do much worse for a Dracula movie.
7.5/10

Thatās a coincidence. I was trying to watch that last night and found it isnāt available on any UK streaming service to watch, rent or buy.
A less lazy man would have been driven to piracy.

Se7en
Seven
I hadn't watched this in years but my younger boy (sixteen, old enough) wanted to give it a go. I think it holds up: oppressive, grimdark, some great set pieces (Sloth....fuuuucckkk), pretty engaging as a procedural, and that ending. It even benefits from having Spacey as a total deviant. I'd forgotten quite how annoying Brad Pitt is in it, though. I rate him in general but not here, where he's just too much of a "I"m not a rookie" try-hard.
Tempted to give it a se7en, but to be fair it's more of an 8/10.

Pitts performance makes it near unwatchable for me now. It's awful.

We can probably thank Pitt's star power for the ending though. I remember reading somewhere that the studio wanted something less bleak, but Pitt said "no fuck that, we're doing David's ending" and that's what they went with.

That's correct - I'd read that and double checked it after watching. The studio really didn't want that ending and in fact there was some unbelievably dumb thing about Paltrow being in the shower when the killer breaks in, but Pitt arrives in time to rescue her. Or something awful like that.
Still, the way he delivers his line(s) in the real final scene is pretty awful.

I can never work out if Pitt is a bad actor or not. I think it's largely because of how he naturally talks that somehow doesn't sound entirely natural.

Yeah, that's a sharp observation.
Looking through his filmography, it's pretty chequered. He's been pretty strong in some roles e.g. Hollywood, Fury, Tree of Life...I might say Ad Astra, but that's just such a snooze-fest, even though it's not his fault. I do quite like him when he goes stupidly quirky e.g. Snatch, 12 Monkeys, True Romance. I even don't mind some of the more mannered performances e.g. 12 years a Slave, Troy (worst hair / accent ever and yet I have a soft spot for his and most of the ridiculous performances in that movie).
I don't think he's bad in general, think he can be pretty good with the right director / script, but is generally awful in Seven.

I think Pitt is generally pretty good and he backs a lot of very good films, as a producer. I would also add Assassination of Jesse James to list of great Pitt performances.
Some duds in there as well, but I reckon he has a fair few more hits than misses. Even if the film isn't that good, like Ad Astra, he is normally a plus point.

I don't remember Pitt being especially bad in S373n, but even if he was I doubt it'd have made much of an impression relative to the movie itself.
I've started on The Batman. At this rate it's going to take at least 3 evenings, so it's more like a TV drama. Luckily it's paced kind of like one.

I think Pitt is a pretty good actor, he's obviously doing something right to be working this long and for quality directors to actively put him in their movies.

Good way to watch it - it's very much a procedural / detective story and breaks down as such. My younger son bloody loves The Batman and puts it well ahead of Nolan's trilogy. I don't, but I'm definitely looking forward to Reeves's upcoming Penguin series / and the movie sequel.

Honestly, I was surprised seeing it in the cinema that it didn't feel it's length. The runtime was putting me off, but it flew by.

Good movies do that. Bad ones drag even when short. I've been enjoying the first hour, though it does seem very evenly paced. Not sure if that's a plus or a minus yet.

I really enjoyed The Batman. I suppose I do miss tHe era of action movies being quite tight in their runtime of about 90 minutes or so but I didn't feel the time here. I'm intrigued about the sequel whenever that happens though.
