Captain Phillips 8/10 (iplayer)
Hell of a hijack story of a cargo ship by Somali pirates back in 2009. It’s proper tense, many of the anti-hijack features seemed amateur at best, but it’s a good story well told. I don’t want to spoil the ending, but wow. Well worth a watch and Hanks is excellent

Speaking of live action cartoons:
Tokyo Ghoul: the live action adaptation of the bit where they fight those cops under a bridge.
Absolute horseshit. I’ve never hated an actor more than I hate the guy who plays Kaneki. It genuinely made my skin crawl.
1/10

Perfect Days - Mubi - 9/10
Lovely, meditative film about a toilet cleaner seemingly content with his lot. Beautifully shot and observed and a real tonic for the fast life. It has both unsettled me and made me grateful for aspects of my own life. A real churn of emotions. Quite the feat from a film 50% about scrubbing porcelain.

That reminds me of Kenny, which is a lovely film which is also about toilets that everyone should see.

Who knew the toilet genre would be so highbrow.

I’m curious what’s so special about Kenny’s toilets that means we should all see them

I loved Perfect Days (and Kenny, though they're very different movies). I think there should be more stories about people who take genuine pride in their work. Like Jiro Dreams of Sushi but for toilets.

Abigail
Just got home from seeing this and really enjoyed it. It's kind of predictable, and full of cliche (which is kinda the point), but it's punchy and exciting. Made me laugh a few times too.

The thing that shat me about Abigail is that the trailer gave the whole fucking premise away. It would have been nice to have been surprised by it.

Tbh I thought that too, but it shows its hand so early that its not much of a twist anyway.

Late Night With The Devil: Like The Blair Witch Project, I think this caught fire because its something a bit different rather than it being amazing. It is still really good but I can see why people have been disappointed when watching it off the back of the hype.
It *is* really good, though. The conceit is cool, the ending rips and, for basically a stage play (it all takes part on one set other than a few cutaway bits of 'archive footage'), it moves along at a fair old pace. And it would have made (make?) a really good play. The studio audience would be replaced by an actual audience. I think that would be really cool.
8/10
(Its on Shudder. If you haven't had one, you can get a free seven day trial to watch it but its worth chucking them the full month as there is some quality stuff on there).

I wasn't really sold on it as it got near the end tbh. I'm not a massive fan of horror movies at is but the stuff before the ending felt a bit rushed and didn't really land. Especially as the CGI looked very out of place.

I think it's worth watching for the cool theming and conceit alone, but yeah the turn it eventually took didn't completely work for me.

I kind of dug that. The tone was all over the place flitting between documentary, pastiche and b-movie (KMKYWAP X Ghostwatch) and there were a few weird effects moments to go along with that. I thought it worked but, yeah, I can see why it wouldn't for you. But when I say 'end' I mean more 'payoff'. I think it landed what it wanted to.

Oh yeah, my friend who I watched it with who's very much into horror movies said it was pretty much Ghostwatch and she preferred that over this.

Am I wrong to be reminded of a couple of Inside no9 episodes by it? The Christmas Devil one and the live one specifically.

I enjoyed it a lot too, very much Reservoir Dogs x Ready or Not, the latter not surprising as it's the same director pairing doing it.
It would be nice if the "twist" wasn't revealed in the trailers but the days of the trailers not really saying much seem to be well over, there are plenty of surprises though so it doesn't give everything away just the basic premise.
Listening to Dan Stevens on the Empire podcast saying they had to get fake blood from elsewhere as they used up the supply there was in Ireland seemed a little bit fanciful but after seeing the film they quite clearly used a hell of a lot.

Dark Angel (Also known as 'I come in Peace') - 9/10
Another forgotten gem from the 80s/90s. Dolph Lundgren is a cop who doesn't play by the rules and Brian Benben is an FBI officer who does. The unlikely duo are put together to bring down a high level drug cartel and a mysterious killer... Basically Lethal Weapon meets Predator/Terminator and its absolutely brilliant. The director is the same guy who did Action Jackson and Stone Cold, the action is brilliant, the soundtrack is pure 80s cool and the actors are all on top form.
If you haven't seen this before get it watched.

It is good but it is very much an Asylum Predator 2 (which is weird as I think they came out at the same time).

Christ haven't seen Dark Angel in forever. I have fond memories of the bad guys and their awesome machine guns and spinny disc thingies and fuck all else truth be told.
I really miss renting tosh like that from back in the day.

Watched a couple of films on the plane yesterday.
The Holdovers was fantastic from beginning to end. It managed to shine despite the shitty screen and terrible sound on the flight which is some achievement. Excellent performances, witty script that made me both laugh and cry and a lovely soundtrack. Truly the champagne of beers.
Relax I'm From The Future was... not very good at all really. I like Rhys Darby, he has an inherent silliness that makes him very endearing and watchable but this film didn't really get much out of him. It's a bit of a pastiche of time travel films but I didn't find it that funny at all.
Also planes are the shittiest places in the world to watch films - noisy, constant interruptions, shitty little screens. Must watch the holdovers again in a proper setting.

Civil War 9/10
Just back from seeing this, thought it was terrific, if not quite the film I thought we were going to see. More a road movie for war photographers and a shocking, often poignant look at civilisations slide into chaos and anarchy. Kirsten Dunst was terrific, so was her hubby; in fact they all were. The score and sound were incredible Recommended and hope it’s not Alex Garland’s last.

I enjoyed this a lot when I saw it in the cinema too. It isn't hugely original, but follows through with conceit well (although I did think the sections during ad breaks could have maintained the illusion better). I saw Immaculate the same weekend and thought that was the slightly more interesting film, albeit also having some flaws. Both were solid horror films though. Hadn't thought about Late Night as a stage play, but you are right that it would work fantastically (and it would have been forced to avoid the very ropey CGI).
