I always preferred the smaller Atari-ST walkers anyway

Fun fact (I like to believe anyway). I learned recently from a friend of a friend who was a zombie extra on Shaun of the Dead, that Simon Pegg took Polaroid selfies with all the zombies as a little memento for them, in all their cool makeup etc.

Sting - 7/10
Fun horror kind of comedy on Netflix, where an alien spider terrorises an apartment block. Really enjoyed it and it harkens back to the 80's 90's horror b movies in a good way. The spider is particularly nasty...

Interesting read. Doesn't come across quite like that to me. He sounds jaded and can't reconcile the fame he has attained with what sounds more like a creative and reclusive personality.

Well perhaps we should take his advice then “This culture of infantilised adulthood, all these grown-ass men arguing about fucking superheroes online, and meanwhile the world is falling apart in so many different ways,” he says. “And that’s why we will all go to hell. Because no one will grow the fuck up any more. Everybody’s so plugged into being a child, you know?”

Just a heads up - Boy Kills World has been 2.99/1.99 on Apple all week. I haven't grabbed it myself, but seems like a hell of a low price for a newish movie.

It's not terrible. Worth a watch at that price, anyway.

Is it better or worse than Guns Akimbo (I really rather liked Guns Akimbo). Quite a bit worse imo. There are some funny bits though, mostly to do with the Archer voiceover.

Because no one will grow the fuck up any more. Everybody’s so plugged into being a child, you know?” He's personally attacking the forum! Getting 'im! He might actually have a point, but he's the worst person to make it. It's not like the MI films are gritty social commentary on the harsh political realities of the world around us. It's mindless action packed entertainment where people pay money to watch a man drive a bike off a cliff. It's all escapism at the end of the day. He's in no place to be a cultural snob about this.

So, there's an interview he did in 2023, but he walked back some of those comments in a blog post from 2015, and provided more context for them in an interview from 2018.

I was like you once. Blond hair. Scraggly little beard. Childlike ears. Full of beans and spunk. I let my principles get in the way sometimes. I punched a bloke in the face once for saying "Hawk the Slayer" was rubbish.

Alan Moore has looked a 100 years old for 30 years.
"And throughout the UK, we’re now familiar with what a Stephen Yaxley-Lennon fan convention looks like."
Ooof.
He has a point, too. But it is a bit different from Pegg's. You can like something without being a fanatic, but the latter has become normalised. There's an economic push to enable that. ComicCon is nothing more than a massive nerdy garage sale in fancy dress with some press interviews being done on the side. It's a celebration of the consumption of overpriced tat as much as it is a celebration of comic/nerd culture.
I think there's also an element of "old man shouting at clouds" for both of them. Yes, Pegg is old now. The kind of rabid fandom the two allude to is still the minority. Magnified by the interconnectedness of the internet. Most people who go along and watch the latest MCU movie are *that* deeply emotionally invested in it and forgotten most of it by the time their next trip out comes around.
There have always been fridge lunatics, and crowds that will devote themselves to them. Alastair Crowley became an Occultist rather than a Social Media Celebrity because of the century he was born in. Andrew Tate would have joined the Golden Dawn if was alive then. Nerd culture has been embraced by fanatics, but the fanatics would have/will have/did embrace something else in the absence of that available substrate.
Anyway, what about those films, eh?

What about those films?
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023) *** Look, there's a very good chance that this is rubbish. The second-string baddie from the first film wants to kill Aquaman for Reasons, finds a magic trident that makes him More Evil, and for even more tenuous Reasons Aquaman has to break his brother out of fish jail so they can be in a buddy movie. The whole thing is essentially shot on a green screen, with full-on CG backdrops that make it look like Horizon: Zero Dawn; very little makes any kind of realistic narrative sense, and it has the depth (and speed of plot development) of a cartoon. But there's something so wild and daffy about it that I enjoy it all the same. I kinda think this series could have been DC's Venom; more-or-less crap but really silly, delightfully embracing that silliness, and with an off-kilter, enjoyable lead performance that doesn't feel like any other kind of superhero. Simon Pegg invited me round his house for dinner once. Said he’d make his speciality… SpaPeggy and Meatballs. The meatballs were from a packet, the sauce was Dolmio, he ate with his mouth open and only talked about himself.
Then at the end of the evening I couldn’t find my shoes. He said he’d let me know if he found them. I walked home in my socks.
