I remember having a real issue with Martyrs. Fried a told me there was a message in there. If there was I didn’t find it. And I only know a few scant things about A Serbian Film and I’m never watching it. Yeah I do draw a line at some things. I'm never going to watch A Serbian Film. Martyrs does have a point, but I think the violence detracts from that. It's a bit like American Psycho (the book), which does have a point about the numbing effect of 80s consumerist capitalism, but all I remember is the "what the fuck is wrong with the person who wrote this" violence. Mostly against women.

I love horror games, but they shit me up way more than films. Generally, I can only play 30-60 mins in a sitting of something like Resident Evil or Alien: Isolation until several hours into the game when I usually find I become immune to the fear because I've been killed so many times or I've got enough weapons that I feel fearless. It's weird how it happens. Amnesia: Dark Descent _really_ shit me up. Horrendous stuff, but glad I got through it. I also really want to play the new Silent Hill 2, having never played the OG, but I know it will be a real struggle

Amnesia I could only play in like 40 minute bursts, as after a while the pressure of the darkness got too much.
Pretty impressive considering how little actual violence etc.. is in it. It's all about atmosphere and a heavy oppressive dark.

Also interested in how many people here play horror games, but don't watch horror films? I can't play horror games, not even the first resident evil, I last about 5 mins before the first creepy section or scare. I've got the Dougs syndrome Fine with horror movies though

I vastly prefer supernatural horror- ghosties and ghoulies, and especially demons and biblical shit. Slasher films I just think are boring- people killing people isn't very interesting and there's enough of that in real life. I'm counting things like Nightmare on Elm Street as supernatural here Torture porn is just lame and I can't stand the Saw films Very rarely am I ever scared by a film though. Off the top of my head I can only think of The Blair Witch Project and The Exorcist
With the Terrifier, I think it's just trashy thrills. People do like being grossed out and pushing boundaries, and it has a memorable central villain
Games are scary because you have agency

Im the opposite. I can watch horror movies all day but have to turn off Super Vet. you should turn off supervet. He's just exploiting emotionally vulnerable people for money. That's the real horror

I can't see many people using their own money to pay for a visit to Super Vet. That'd definitely be a time to cash in on the pet's insurance.
In which case, exploit away I say...

I like horror movies (stuff like Terrifier I have zero interest in seeing though) but just don't really get on with most horror games, I just get too tense.

To take it right back to the beginning, it depends on the sub-genre of horror game. I really like Resident Evil and the whole 'action horror' genre but I find stuff like Until Dawn as boring as watching Minecraft Lets Plays.

I don’t know the Terrifier films at all but assumed they must be goofy comedy horror movies what with them having such a dumb name and a villain who looks like he’d be in Rob Zombie music video.
I suppose hyper-real gore for gore’s sake can have its place. I don’t know what it looks like in these movies but something like the live action version of Ichi The Killer had some style to it.
I guess the difference between gratuitous and stylish is how much time it lingers on the suffering for me. I’ve seen loads of very gory films and films with loads of kills, happening in all kinds of different ways, but not a fan of a film that takes real pleasure in the pain of it happening.

I'm pretty bad with pure horror games tbh, I just don't like jump scares that much. But I like atmospheric horror things, like (for example) The Last Door. I bloody loved The Last Door.

May be of interest, decent short (8 min) watch on jump scares (with loads of clips of them): www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p09htd13/inside-cinema-shorts-58-the-jump-scareInside Cinema Shorts: 58. The Jump Scare Boo! Mike Muncer examines a filmmaking technique used to jolt viewers out of their seats in everything from the most frightening horror films to family-friendly franchises. Are jump scares cheap ways to elicit a physical response from the audience, or an example of movie-making magic in its purest form? Inside Cinema investigates, drawing on films and filmmakers ranging from Alfred Hitchcock to Stanley Kubrick, from Scream to Star Wars, from classic slasher horrors to the contemporary directors reclaiming the 'jump scare' for a new generation.

I love the Resident Evil games, they aren’t scary to me, just a lot of fun - along with Souls my favourite series
I used to watch a lot of horror movies when I was little so I must be desensitised to them now as none bother me
Despite that I still don’t want to watch the Terrifier, seems like it’s gore for the sake of it

The thing video games have over film in terms of horror is that you have that whole “what’s behind me?” thing. Games like Bioshock leaned into that, but just having a first person viewpoint gives that anxiety.

Also interested in how many people here play horror games, but don't watch horror films? im crap at horror games. I put SOMA on the non-conflict mode and still couldn’t play past the ten minute mark. I enjoy horror movies but the most horror I can handle in videogame form is Resident Evil 4 and I have to play it in the day time. Anything else is too much.

Noped out hard on Resi4 in VR. Fuck that.

Is it weird that I'm playing Resi4 at the moment, and when I tried to think of horror games that I've played I couldn't come up with many, including that one.
I admit it's clearly horror, but it doesn't feel like a horror game. It's an action game about shooting things, so it goes in the same mental compartment as Doom and other games like that. Now that I think about it, it's functionally quite similar to Space Marine 1 (which I'm also currently playing) which also includes a lot of shooting, slashing and blood. But not horror.
Whereas horror movies tend to up the blood and gore, games already often have a lot of blood and gore, so the ones that seem more 'horror' to me are the ones with the tense atmosphere. Amnesia, for example, probably shares a lot more game dna with stealth games like Thief than with Resi4.

The Deer Hunter
I had a spare seven hours or so, so I decided to watch this for the first time in probably...20 years?
No surprise: I loved it even more as a 50-year-old giffer. It's every bit the masterpiece it's regarded to be, and one of the finest of the greatest era of American film-making.
There's no point banging on about the plot. I will say that a guaranteed way to trigger me is to assert that the pre-Vietnam part of the movie is too long. It's one of the most immersive hours of cinema ever, with an immaculate depiction of the local community - the steel mill, the bar, the dilapidated homes, the orthodox wedding with its formal and informal rituals, the hunting trip. Just wonderful stuff - beautifully shot by Vilmos Zsigmond - that is then brutally ripped to shreds.
I don't think Cimino stood a chance of coming close to this. I'm not one to defend Heaven's Gate: it maybe didn't deserve the shit it got, but it's a really flawed film.
I understand the film is politically controversial but first and foremost, for me, it's as simple as you get thematically - the effect of war on ordinary people, on friends.
The only negative I can think of is I get sad when I see John Cazale in the movie. It's well-established that EMI, on learning of his advanced lung cancer, wanted to fire him, but everyone else dug their heels in (above all his partner, Meryl Streep).
10/10

It's a tremendous film, agreed. Bleak, but brilliant. Long time since I've seen it too.

Memoir of a Snail
Adam Elliott's new stop-motion-animated dramedy about a young woman experiencing a comical account of tragedy throughout her life, and finally coming out of her shell (get it? snail? shell?) and making her way in the world.
It was fine. I feel a bit bad saying that, because stop-motion takes years and years of painstaking effort to make, and I really want to love something that this much love has been put into.
But it was just hammering on the "Cry! Cry like you've never cried before!" button a little too much for my liking. Any time the movie is in danger of letting its characters experience happiness, it goes right back to making people die, or get arrested, or getting the shit kicked out of them by bullies, or orphaned, or abused by foster parents, etc etc. It just felt a bit cheap to me, a bit manipulative.
Anyway, it's still worth watching for the craft. But I liked Mary & Max quite a bit more.

Dune part 2
I somehow hadn't seen this yet. Missed it in the theatre because of surgery and illness, then I apparently just forgot about it, somehow.
Anyway, loved it about as much as the first one. My only worry going in was the story once they got into the Fremen and Feyd-Rautha stuff -Villeneuve can be a bit too terse with the characters sometimes - but I think it all worked. I had no problem with the pacing, which was a complaint I saw a lot when it came out, but that may be because I reread the book fairly recently (that one also rushes to the finish line in the last few chapters). And it's utterly, utterly gorgeous.
9/10. Heck, maybe a 10. I can't think of anything that kept me rapt to this degree since the first one.
Deadpool & Wolverine
It's fine, but I've had my fill of these, and Marvel in general. Watching it just after Dune also made it look very ugly. I obviously don't expect a Deadpool movie to try to be all artsy (and most Marvel movies look like crap, so it's in good company), but the side by side comparison didn't do it any favours. But it's fine, I just wasn't particularly into it.

Watched Deadpool and Wolverine this afternoon too. Probably a 6.5 or 7/10 for me. I like the schtick so got plenty of laughs, just dipped a bit in the middle imo. Decent rapport between the 2, lots of nice nods and cameos. But yeah, probably a bit done now.

Re: Deadpool and Wolverine, I enjoyed the first two Deadpool movies but as a non-MCU fan this had too much Avengers/multiverse shit for me, so I noped out. I don't recall there being much of that in the first two, they felt pretty stand alone.

It leaned *far* too much in to meta and 4th wall breaking. Nearly all the gags were about this. Sure I get it that's the USP for this character but there's a limit

The substance - 8.5/10
Well that was icky… Brilliant acting and effects and just a very well made movie, I’m not sure it’s the cutting piece of social commentary it thinks it is though. Highly recommended but I got a nagging feeling whilst watching it that I have watched a very similar movie in the past but can’t for the life of me remember what it is.
Really looking forward for the next movie from this director

I mean, it's not exactly subtle about the point it's making. It's not a subtle movie in general! But that wasn't a problem at all for me; I was having too much fun to really care about how much sense its social commentary made.

Is The Substance proper horror (jump scarey etc.) or just a bit gross at times body horror?
