I don't think creators should ever pay that much attention to fans and what they want.
Maybe if it helps them improve a game in early access or something it could be useful. But if a creator makes an artistic or narrative choice, I think in most cases they should stick to their guns, even if fans don't like it.

I wonder how many people saw Alien in the 70s and thought this claustrophobic horror films needs a dozen heavily armed soldiers blowing everything up to a bombastic action movie soundtrack

The Apprentice - 8/10 (throughout)
Very solid. I'll be amazed if the Oscars don't nominate Stan and Strong - they are both excellent. For anyone else, the film would be a shocking indictment, but it feels like Korma Donald compared to Vindaloo Trump of the last decade or two. I'll be amazed if Trump doesn't sue the asses off the filmmakers - perhaps he won't bother because of the extra attention that'll inevitably draw, but his skin is notoriously thin. There's one scene in particular which seems contrary to shifting interpretations over the years from the person involved.

I loved the short scenes on the planet in the drudgery and Rain being rebuffed by the deskworker (10/10). The bantz before boarding the ship was terrible (4/10). It greatly picked up when they boarded the space station, but that's always the easy bit in a horror film right, before the horrors are actually uncovered (9/10). I also liked the science lab sections (7/10). Then the action ramped up and got a bit silly imo - agree that the xenos themselves were the least interesting part of it (5/10). THAT line happened and we hit rock bottom (0/10), then I thought the 'epilogue' was awesome (9/10). UnEvEn This review template needs to be adopted more. 10/10.

With "THAT LINE" in Romulus, I felt as if I could see the actor himself cringe when he said it.

There's a line in Deadpool Wolverine about ice skating which has the same cringey unnecessaryness about it.

One thing I didn't mention when I posted last night is just how many production companies there were involved in making it, it's logo after logo after logo for a long time, easily the most companies I've ever seen to make a feature film. Who Trump could sue would be rather tricky, not that it matters he hasn't got a leg to stand on, watch the Kermode review where he never says allegedly once about what goes on in the film as pretty much everything is a matter of public record, including the rape scene.
I imagine it was lawyered at so many levels nothing will come from his stupid threats.

That's probably a result of them struggling to find funding. None of the big studios would go anywhere near it, so they would have gone to smaller partners, who could have afforded less capital individually.

Cocaine Bear. 6.5/10. Enjoyed that a good bit more than I expected. Some very funny scenes here and there (especially those with the ranger, who was ace). Ran out of steam but got some laughs so perfect for lateish on a Friday (After we had to stop The Fall Guy as kids were losing interest).

Smile 2 and the substance back to back.
Smile 2. I had only seen the original for the first time about one month ago and enjoyed it. 2 isn’t as good but still has plenty to scares and stressful scenes. Naomi Scott was pretty excellent as far as horror movie acting is concerned.
6/10 from me but friends said strong 7s.
The substance I’ve already seen but my friends hadn’t. Everyone thought it was incredible and their favourite film of the year.
Strong 9s and 10s all round.

Alien Romulus
Pretty solid Alien action for the most part. Everything mostly looks good and solid. I thought the guy playing Andy was the best cast member. I liked the Facehuggers feeling as threatening as they did.
Turning on the referencetron for half a dozen shot-for-shot scenes as well as multiple big lines was a shame. Rook should never have been cast how he was. For a legacy sequel I think this is absolute top tier, as an Alien film its hurt by being so unoriginal but its entertaining stuff.
I know they’ve talked about being influenced by Isolation and it did feel like a game at times the way it ran through the greatest hits of the series.
I wonder if anyone will ever be able to make an Alien horror film ever again? I guess with the tv series the opportunity is there to have different episodes play to different genres. A tight 45 or hour horror bottle episode should be totally doable. And if not we’ve always got Isolation 2 in pre-production now.
A solid 8 I reckon. Probably on the Resurrection tier for me behind the first three but still good stuff.

In a Violent Nature (on Shudder)
A bunch of idiots wake up a Jason Voorhees in the forest, and the film mostly follows him around while he does his work.
This is actually one of the best horror things I've seen this year. It's almost like slow cinema, with very little dialogue and basically no music, while not skimping on the violence and effects. It's like an arthouse Friday the 13th.
10/10

The wild robot
Absolutely beautiful, like a painting in motion. Great soundtrack. Unbelievably boring and cliche. Story told many times before and better. Generic characters and obvious at all times. Big hero 6, wall-e, iron giant, that Netflix robot movie and others I’m forgetting were all better movies.
Maybe a 6 out of 10.
Would have been more enjoyable if all the other robot movies hadn’t come before it so it felt new and original.

The apprentice
Great performances all around. I think any trump voters will Like him more after watching that and any trump haters will hate him more. Im not sure how to rate it. Maybe 6 or 7 for the actors.

The Fall Guy. 6.5/10. I enjoyed it quite a lot and it was nice to see Gosling speak more than 5 words. Good old fashioned fun imo. Hannah Waddingham loving it too. Managed to watch the extended cut, definitely a few scenes that should have gone and obviously did.

Also found their list of horror films to look forward to in 2024, including one called Stopmotion.

I might have overegged it a little; it's not a perfect movie (it's very slow, for one thing).
But it's unique and strange and beautiful, and the ending is great. And some of the kills are absolutely wild; there's one in particular that rivals anything in Terrifier in terms of practical effects.

American Fiction - 8/10
I could probably watch Jeffrey Wright in absolutely anything and I'd enjoy it, but really liked the script, meta-story, wider cast and humour behind this one as well. Very good.

Hotel Transylvania
Had a cold this weekend (diddums!) and couldn't face anything too challenging to watch with the brats, but it's nearly halloween, so..
Eh. Might be the cold talking but I was kinda bored and never really got into it. There were a couple of funny bits, but the entire thing is just relentlessly fast paced and never stops to take a breath. Plus the story is obvious from the start. (Same kind of parent/kid learn to get each other story that's been in a bunch of these CG movies).
Wish we'd watched Beetlejuice instead / 10

My Hero Academia - You're next (cinema)
Another feature-length spin off of the popular anime series. Pretty enjoyable, although it descended into the usual sequences of flashing lights at the end. Inessential viewing even for fans but not a bad way to spend an afternoon either.
7/10

The Wild Robot I thought this was excellent. It looks gorgeous, its got some cute characters, big soundtrack and some very effective emotional punches. Adults and children both crying at various points in the screening we were in (and laughing at the jokes too). As soon as the lights came up at the end my son dove off my knee and onto my wife sobbing “I love you Mummy”*. Obviously its got some big clear reference points and influences like Wall-E, Iron Giant, Bambi etc but a) those are hardly bad movies and b) it delivers. If it had been Pixar rather than Dreamworks people would be praising it as a return to form I reckon. * 28 years old, he is
