Speak no Evil - 7/10 McAvoy is excellent as always, and the rest of the cast hold it together pretty well. It does a great job of building up the tension, but kind of falls apart a bit in the last act. Was heading towards a solid 8 up until then.
Deadpool & Wolverine - 7/10 Enjoyable enough, but I think the days of me giving a superhero movie like this anything higher are over. They just lose my attention after the nth fight sequence or flashy bit of CGI. I was more than ready for it to finish by the time he broke the fourth wall (yet again) to say something along the lines of "don't worry, it's nearly over". I managed to avoid spoiling a lot of the cameos somehow, so there were some nice surprises along the way at least. Although even the relentless fan service got a bit tiresome after a while...

Abigail
I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while, ever since it was mentioned briefly in here. Finally got a chance to watch last night and enjoyed it a lot. The one downer is that I would have enjoyed it a lot more if Apple hadn’t put a fracking plot spoiler in the synopsis as I clicked “rent”. FFS.
“Go in blind” I remember someone saying on here. I certainly bloody tried to. Grrr!
Had the same energy as Ready or Not, so IMDBing at the end made me smile.
8/10

Saw X
I’m not the biggest fan of Saw, but having read the synopsis, it sounded fairly interesting. Saw man wants to cure his cancer. Gets screwed over. Kills everyone. With some twists etc.
I give it sequel out of 10.

Hasn't he had this cancer for about twenty years now?

I think it's set between the second and third ones, or something like that.

They've got a theater showing of The Shining Extended Edition next week. Thinking of going, as I've never watched the extended edition myself... Are those extra 30 minutes any good? I imagine Kubrick must have cut them for a reason.
Either way, I'll have another movie to rate very soon.

tbh i know it's a classic and all but i kinda think the last half of The Shining is already a bit too long. The first half has a great build up, but if it's an extra 30 minutes of an already slightly too long chase sequence at the end i can see why it'd be cut will check back for your review tho

I think it's been available for a while, seems it's the Bluray 4K edition from a few years ago. Still, never got around to it.
It's one of my favourite movies ever, so watching it on the big screen ought to be an experience. The ticket is a bit expensive for an old movie, but lower than full price anyway.

I think The Shining is edited to perfection tbh. I have seen the extended version but I’ve never felt the original is lacking without those scenes. Would still definitely go and see it on the big screen mind you.

The Shining is most definitely up there as one of my favourite films. I do somewhat agree with King however, as having read the book, I do feel Kubrick went a different path. If you put Doctor Sleep next to it, it sort of doesn’t feel like it works together as a sequel. But if you read the book and watch Doctor Sleep..

Deadpool and Wolverine 7/10
Is alright, feels like it’s trying too hard too cram in the gratuitous violence and swearing and forgets how to be funny. Far too many slo-mo shots to 80s songs.
Jackman is the best thing about it but isn’t bringing anything new to it, and his back story sounds far more interesting than the plot of this.

Deadpool and Wolverine is easily the weakest of the trilogy for me, a real whiff of a movie
Watched The Intern (Netflix) tonight. After watching Taxi Driver last week it was an interesting choice seeing the impact of time on man and environment
Both the leads, De Niro and Hathaway, we absolutely excellent for what is a relatively lightweight throwaway movie
I think as you get older, closer to retirement, it’s more poignant so glad I watched it now rather than on release
Overall I’d recommend it, solid 7 out of 10

Prey - 4/10
Did I just watch a different film to the rest of the internet?! This was baddddd. Not Predators/The Predator bad, but still pretty awful. Abysmal CGI, terrible opening 45 minutes, people jumping around like it's a wuxia film or something, and absolutely zero tension. Alien: Romulus is positively Oscar worthy compared to this.

I really enjoyed prey. I need to give that another watch and also Mandy. Mandy was amazing but I was slightly high so need to check it out again.
Also can someone else go and see joker 2 so I can read how awful it is from someone else’s viewpoint? Since walking out I’ve read what the ending was and it seems like it was the right decision.

I'm kind of interested in seeing it, on account of it being that rare treat that bombs both with critics and with audiences. Usually it's one or the other, but Todd Phillips managed to do both!

Ha, no way. Literally just did an impromptu double feature of the exact same films.
Don't *quite* agree with you about Speak no Evil. It was mostly a fairly by-the-numbers "relatable characters go away and stay with people and then PERIL!" template that's been done multiple times over the years since Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Even the "...but middle class" thing has been done to death by now. Agree that McAvoy is always great, and his restrained aggressive insanity is a perfect fit for this. I actually though the last section was quite good, as it really allowed McAvoy to go nuts. Agree it's a 7/10: it's standard cliche done well (but with some interesting....garnish). I've got to be in the right mood for this type of film . I can only tolerate so much drama sustained by repeated stupidity by people who really should know better. Without McAvoy, this would have been a 5/10, at best.
Think you're being too kind to Deadpool. Absolutely all the meta/4th wall was *way* overdone. Yeah, we get it. MCU has been pumping the same stuff for ages now, so it's ripe for a bit of meta self-deprecation but....calm down ffs. 4/10.

They changed the ending for the remake of Speak No Evil. Which makes sense, as the original ending is one of the bleakest, most nihilistic things I've ever fucking seen. But it does make the remake a bit flat, like it's just a regular horror movie.
