Blue Crush was the film starring Kate Bosworth’s bottom (and presumably the rest of Kate Bosworth), right?
I think there might have been a stunt bum involved.
Edit: new page, obviously.

Yes. I think she did a lot of her own surfing.

Can't really agree with a lot of that. For me it was overwhelming proof that dream projects from directors that have been gestating in their brains for decades are generally never good, hubris is very much a thing, sometimes producers telling you no can be a good thing and Shia LaBouef is awful.I didn't think I could dislike him more until I saw Megalopolis.

Also thought Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight looked like they would literally keel over at any moment. Absolutely awful casting.

But is Megalopolis *boring*?
I kinda fancy watching something a bit nuts and non-studio-focus-tested. But not if it's 3 hours of boredom.

Well it's not three hours long so that's in its plus column.
Of a couple of reviews I've listened to Helen O'Hara on the Empire podcast and Mark Kermode's they were incredibly bored watching it.
I'll probably going to see it just to say that I have because this ain't getting a second week in the cinemas.

When trailers originally came out, I was intrigued. Even if it did turn out to be a car crash it at least looked like an interesting one. Kermode put me right off though and it just sounded dull. Think he even specifically said it wasn't a so bad it's good situation. It was just rubbish.

The funniest bit is you realise how long this has been sitting in Coppola's draw based on the stupid fucking futuristic names he's given his characters because it's blatantly what someone in the 1970s thought a future person would be named.

I really want to want to see it, but the trailer was absolutely abysmal and Adam Driver's hair really put me off.

I found it pretty boring tbh. The dazzling Vaseline smeared visuals wear off after a while. Some scenes end really abruptly, some drag on for far too long, and some of the 'set-piece' scenes come out of nowhere, feel like they should be really important, defining moments and then they end and it's onto the next script dump. Jambo's point about the necessity for some outside interference was at the forefront of my mind throughout the entire runtime.

It's not slow boring. Something is always going on. It all just felt dramatically inconsequential to me. I didn't care what happened at the end because I was bored of all the nothingness. Which is a bit of an oxymoron.

Where is this new preferred seat you've found at the cinema?

Almost certainly not applicable to all Cineworlds but Aldershot's screen 7 (one of the bigger ones that used to have DBOX before they removed them during COVID) seat K11 is about dead centre on both axes.

The Substance (Odeon)
Strange one this, although I loved it from start to finish it’s unlikely I’d ever watch it again. I don’t think it would have the same impact on a second watch
The two leads were both great, especially Moore, who was pretty brave to take on the role imo
Also glad I watched on the big screen, without distractions you sometimes get at home
Didn’t notice any walk outs but the two lads sat to the left of me said it was the worst film they’d ever seen
So it’s either a 1 or an 8.5 depending on who you most align with

Megalopolis was something I respected more than I actually liked. Coppola had something he wanted to do, without a single fuck given for profitability or people even enjoying the result, and he put up a significant chunk of his own money to do it.
I didn't like the movie. But it's the kind of wild swing that I want to see more of (but probably won't, because Hollywood is controlled by the businessmen)

Saw the Megadopolopolos last night. 30% walkout during the screening (but there were only 3 of us to start with). I don't know. It had lots of scantily dressed women, which I like. Structurally, it felt more like a stage play than a film, a point Coppola was aiming for I guess given all the heavy Shakespeare quoting.
I've definitely watched worse stage plays.
It's not as bad as Cats. It's worse than Black Panther 2.

Done some classics. Done some shit. Takes some balls to blow his own money on a project he clearly had passion for. In the end if he enjoyed making it, then he's done his job.

Saw the Meg last night. 30% walkout during the screening (but there were only 3 of us to start with). This had me genuinely confused for a few minutes. I'd assume The Meg would have a much higher walkout rate.

Batman: The Killing Joke (DVD) - 2/5
Coming 30 years (!) after the graphic novel it's no surprise that the content feels a little dated, but the real problem is none of it's executed particularly well. The batgirl stuff at the beginning could have worked but feels very separate from the main plot, and yet it's given almost equal time, consequently the actual meat of the story feels too brief. The animation is ok, but feels like a downgrade from the source, offering none of the advantages animation could bring. The voice acting is great though, as expected.

I haven't read the comic in about a decade. But I rated it fairly high. Me too. Can't really say whether the comic still feels dated as it's also been a while. But watching the film it all felt a bit edge lordy. Maybe I've just become jaded or a bit more sensitive to women being portrayed in this way in comics, I don't think it would fly now. Although that's not necessarily a good thing as It does serve the story. I've seen some extremely scathing reviews of it, especially the new batgirl stuff at the start, but honestly I can see what they were trying to do and it kind of works, it's just not integrated very well into the story. I will say that the more I think about it the more I like it. Time to dust off the book.

Megalopolis (2024) *** Christ, I've no idea where to start. It's utterly bananas as everyone has said. Is it boring? Well, it's about two-hours-fifteen but it feels longer. There are long scenes of characters stiltedly delivering cod-philosophical speeches on the nature of civilization. Driver quotes extensively from Shakespeare. It's all very stagey; like the Gotham scenes in the first Batman, that all take place on that one set they built, or like the Phantom Menace, with actors standing stiffly on a green screen. It's full of deeply problematic actors. It frequently builds to what feels like a climax, only for the incident to pass by with barely any ripple to the overall plot. There's a bit where a major supporting character declare they're going to do something important, and then is killed off-screen, and no one mentions it for twenty minutes and their storyline just stops dead. But it's - and I cannot stress this enough - really, really weird. People lick each other, twerk whilst wearing togas, there are trippy psychedelic visuals, a sort of 2001-style acid trip thingie, statues falling over as if they're sleepy, hallucinogenic dream states, time-stopping, and a bit where Jon Voight asks Shia LeBeouf to look at his boner. It's. Fucking. Crazy.
Is it good? To be honest, no, not really. Bits of it are tremendous, and fair play to the guy for just doing it. Is it boring? Yes, frequently, but it's also weird and engaging. It's like a $100m student art film. It's like a cross between a Star Wars prequel and Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet. I'm glad it exists, I'm very glad I saw it, but Jesus. It's hard to recommend really. It's a five-star two-star movie.
Oh, and I saw it last night and I was the only one in the theatre. Just little old me. So I can't imagine he's getting a lot of that hundred million back, poor sod. (Cinema)

Charitably, it’s the kind of film I would put on when I really just want to just spend two hours scrolling on my phone but I was, sadly, trapped somewhere I couldn’t do that.
It’s just so boring. Like shockingly boring. It’s not even so bad it’s good, it just saps your will to live.

The Innocent - 7.5/10
Fun little French film which twists the heist format by having two civilians become embroiled in a job to rob a truck with an ex-con fresh out of prison.
