Roundup of some films I saw in the last week or so: Asterix and Cleopatra (1968) **One of the first adaptations of Asterix, it feels almost like a TV movie. The animation is largely quite poor (think a second-tier Hannah Barbera cartoon), and it features some gross racial stereotypes. There are some quite nice gags playing off its animated/comic-book nature, but it feels just like a dated curio. Not keen on the voice acting, either. (Prime Video) I guess you could say that the original comics have some major stereotypes, though more national than racial. Not always distinguishable.
Iirc, they were pretty universal in their stereotyping though as pretty much every nationality got skewered.
I could never get into any animated or live action version of Asterix though, as the voices or characters never felt right. Kinda like Discworld in that regard.

Yeah, the books are pretty funny in their depictions of Europeans, mocking their stereotypical national characteristics in a way that's very common in European (including British, obvs) comedy. But I don't think I'd ever read any of the books that contain African characters, so... ah. Full-on Tintin levels of "holy shit".
I agree that, in the few I've seen, they've never nailed the "right" VA for Asterix and Obelix, but in general the voice acting was ropey across the board here, not just because Asterix for some reason sounds like an American Joe Pasquale.

Love Lies Bleeding - 6/10 80s violent bogan Americana from the director of Saint Maud. It's a real change of pace from that. Angry people, feuds and domestic violence. The first half is really great, albeit somewhat a retread of grubby backwater thrillers. I was well onboard, the mood is great, but then it loses it's way in the second half. Disappointing tbh. Some spoilery thoughts for anyone in the future: My main grievance was that the finale just felt rushed and anti-climactic. For example: - where the fuck were the police as it all played out? OK, the father was paying some of them off, but a squad of policeman investigated the ravine and found a shallow mass grave. Then basically nothing happened with the police afterwards. - Lou Sr. was a menacing, live beetle-eating presence throughout, yet he had zero guards at his huge mansion and seemingly left the giant front door open so that anyone could walk in and out. What happened to the two heavies he took to JJ's house to presumably rough him up? - Likewise, he hog-tied Jackie and left her in an open building next to a tennis court. Huh. Why not actually hide her somewhere hard to find, with guards maybe. - Lou was grumpy AF with the gym members, yet quite happy to play happy families in the hospital with her father who killed her own mother. Heaven forbid asking Lou for a Mountain Dew. - Lou's mother's backstory was very underbaked more broadly, as was Beth's character. I wasn't convinced at all by Beth's protestations at Lou when she was told Lou she shouldn't have intervened in their violent relationship. - One that baffled me in the moment: Beth is in hospital after being smashed up, Jackie goes to the house and kills JJ. Where the hell were the three children during this time?! Alone at unconscious mum's bedside?!
I did think Kristen Stewart and Katy O'Brien were really good. I bought their relationship and intense love for one another. But the rest of it around that was a weak. The trip to Vegas for the body building contest was pretty brief and underwhelming. And the giant Jackie at the end was too jarring for me. A visual flourish which papered over the underwhelming and limp downfall of Lou Sr.

That's a shame. I only just saw the trailer yesterday, but it looked pretty promising.

It's got pretty positive reviews so far so I think I'll still be checking it out. No idea when, though, it's not even down as "coming soon" at my local Vue.

Worth a watch deffo. The two Guardian reviews of it I read are quite polarised. I agree with more the guy who gave it two stars than five, but the two star guy didn't like Saint Maud, so he can do one.

Yeah, definitely give it a go. It was more of a 7/10 for me. Not as great as I hoped, but still solid.
I've never actually seen Saint Maud, so that's one for my list this weekend!

Saint Maud is certainly an experience, Morfydd Clark's performance is superb.

Strays
A heartwarming animal comedy that is absolutely hilarious and extremely not for kids.
12/10
A must watch, particularly if you need a cheer up and even more so if you own or have owned a dog.

The Fall Guy was fun enough. The kind of film that I'll likely have forgotten mostly about in a week or two, but enjoyable while it lasted. Knew absolutely nothing about the original series, so no idea whether it holds true to that at all.
Gosling is in his playful mode and I think he always does well with that. Emily Blunt is good, although perhaps could be given more to do. Hannah Waddingham is as good as ever. The stunts are, rightfully, excellent and particularly found the big stunt towards the end and everything surrounding it really great. It goes on a bit after that moment in a slightly unnecessary way, but it is fine.
First 20 minutes or so are a little all over the place and it took a while to actually be the comedy action film I was expecting. Overall a pretty solid 3 star film and worth checking out if you haven't got anything better to see.

That sounds ace and just up my street. Well, apart from it being shit that is. I’d love to hear a second opinion from someone on here on it. The IMDB user reviews are never any use and they all sound like they watched different films to one another. And I am very into the idea of this film. So I finally got around to watching this and agree with everything you say. Good premise, but falls flat.

Equaliser 3
Disappointing amount of Denzel fucking people up. It's the only reason people want to watch these films, and they don't bother showing much.
5/10

Zone of interest
10/10
very very slow paced movie which requires knowledge of the events and the situation to truly understand how horrific it is. It does not show almost anything of the atrocities committed there. directly I mean.
I hate spoilers of any kind so I went with very little of information on the setting and who we are seeing, as well as the date it is set.
The slow realisation around 10min what we are watching made the rest of the movie extremely tense.
banality of evil.
Definitely will be rewatched and do recommend it.

The Proposition (Tubi)
I've nfi why it's on Tubi. I associate that channel with cheap knockoffs of popular movies, and films about sharks. But a friend told me to give it a go, and wowee there's a lot of good stuff on there. For free!
Anyway, The Proposition. I hadn't seen it in years, and wanted to see if it held up.
It does! It's utterly brutal and unforgiving, like a Western set in hell. Great performances, great Nick Cave soundtrack, great visuals... it's got the whole package. This is the movie that makes John Hillcoat the perfect choice to direct Blood Meridian (if it ever actually gets made)
Watch it! It's great!
10/10

lukasz That must've been an interesting experience going in blind. (not sure how you managed that mind you!) The sound design of it was absolutely stellar, so must've been even more unsettling as it unfolded with everything going on in the background.

They rotate in a new bunch of movies on the first of each month, and there are usually some pretty good ones, along with all the dross.
Ads aren't too bad either, for a free service.

The important question is: does The Fall Guy have the theme song?
I seem to remember they had the song first, then came up with the show. Maybe I'm imagining that.

The sound design of it was absolutely stellar, so must've been even more unsettling as it unfolded with everything going on in the background. Friend recommended it and we watched it together over discord. All I knew it was about holocaust, based on the book and it won lots of awards. We also knew that book had a lot fictional subplots. What we didnt know they were stripped for this movie and the movie kept everything set in reality. The result was a very unnerving realisation of where the house is, who are these people, what we are hearing, and how causal everyone is. Then it got worse.

I get why you asked for other opinions though as it’s so gentle that it draws you in and you can’t help but feel your just not getting something - I wondered if my own desire for the supernatural was weighing against the enjoyment.

I definitely expected it to be a cosy horror-comedy. Its pretty much the ideal set-up and the cast is spot on for it to be too. Instead you get Christopher Lloyd and Simon Pegg ruminating on the nature of grief.
