Saltburn
Really entertaining, slightly let down by spelling it out for the audience at the end. Get rid of "that" montage in the last 10 min and the film is instantly elevated I'm my opinion.
Bath licking good/10
Anatomy of a fall
Superb superb superb..Great performances and so many different ways it could be interpreted. Best film I've seen this year.

Monkey man! Indian John wick but a far better movie than John wick. 9 Can't wait for that, not sure I can hold out for home release. Don’t wait. It is definitely a movie for the big screen. Great soundtrack, crazy action and beautifully shot.

Ad Astra - 3/10
A boring film about Brad Pitt being sad due to daddy issues, coincidentally set in spaaaaace.
Fuck all happens other than Pitt moping around and giving the odd dull monologue. None of the other ideas in the film seem to connect or have anything to with his main quest to be sad. I felt myself drift off a few times throughout.
Looks very nice though. But still toss.

Barbie on NOW
Well that was disappointing. I didn't really enjoy much of it at all. It wasn't very subtle. It might have worked as a shorter sketch/satirical piece.
What I couldn't fathom is how on earth this got greenlit by Mattel. They get absolutely roasted in this. Would have loved to be a fly on the wall in those discussions - although any publicity is good publicity seems to have held true!
4/10.

Barbie 7/10
Weird, sorta fun. I wasn’t expecting any sort of subtlety but then I didn’t expect it to go quite as far with it as it did.

Road House
Crap remake of a crap 80s action film. I liked it! I knew what I was getting into when I put it on and I wasn't really disappointed. McGregor was terrible, but so were all 80s European villains. Was that his real voice? What sort of accent was that? I never need to see him again quite frankly.

Fight Club
It's been a punchy double bill for us. Thought we'd revisit this after the talk about it in here. Still holds up as a really entertaining and interesting movie in my eyes. At no point did I ever think Tyler Durden is the hero, it doesn't frame him like that at all, so I'm not sure where that has come from. Morons will always idolise morons, simple as.
Not quite as brilliant as I'd remembered, but then I've seen it loads so the mystique has probably worn off a bit.
8/10

Leave the world behind Netflix:
A family's getaway to a luxurious rental home takes an ominous turn when a cyberattack knocks out their devices, and two strangers appear at their door. ggod main leads but certainly not the best things we have seen them in and why didn't someone tell Myha'la Herrold to wear a feckin bra or even better wear a top covering her nipples!
It was ok, pretty good and a solid start and in parts but didn't really go anywhere and we didn't think it "landed the ending" which seems to be happening more and more in films and tv series.

Seize Them! 73/100. Super low budget fantasy epic featuring lots of people that you know. Maybe not epic. Anyway, it's worth 90 minutes of your time, just because these sorts of films need supporting.

Usual suspects. Again etc. Still a good 8 out of 10 for me. Benecio Del Toro as Fenster just doesn't get old. And the line up scene, obviously cracks me up every time

And the line up scene, obviously cracks me up every time I really wonder what I'd think of this film nowadays, as Singer and Spacey are two of the disgraced filmmakers who I feel quite icky about nowadays, I think because of how much I adored the pair of them. When it comes to "legacy" stuff I'm quite good at separating the art from the artist, but there are a few people for whom I just sort of feel bad now if I watch their stuff. It cast a huge pall over the X-Men films recently. Ten years ago, Usual Suspects might have made my top ten films of all time.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2005) *** I'd not seen this before, and I think it's commonly thought of as even worse than the original FF, but I kinda dug it. The core quartet feel more of a team and a family, and we get a bit more nuance and shade (Reed secretly working on a science thing when supposedly planning a wedding feels very Reed). Yeah, okay, the Surfer and especially Galactus aren't exactly "comics accurate" (although the visual effects on the former are incredibly good), and despite finally getting a more traditional look Doom remains utter shit, but the fact we get more of a plot and it feels like the FF are proactive and heroic really helps. I would have enjoyed another film or two with this cast.
Plus Captain Holt is in it, what more do you want? (Disney+)

Just Go With It (Jennifer Aniston, Adam Sandler) 7/10
Realistically a trash rom com, and quite mean spirited at times with some bad messaging but it’s of its time and did have some laughs. The kids were in particular really funny. I have to be really in the mood for Adam Sandler stuff (which my Mrs loves) but this was fine for a night when I was too tired for anything other than passive watching.
Crazy. Stupid. Love (Steve Carrell, Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling) 9/10
Realistically a slightly less trashy rom com veering into dramedy at times. Again some outdated bits in it but has genuine heart and genuinely fantastic performances. Brilliant twists too. Second time watching this and liked it just as much.

The House that Jack Built Always meant to watch this as seen it talked about a lot. It was OK. Talks through a serial killers kills, some are messed up. Matt Dillon is absolutely brilliant in it, but it gets very silly towards the end and was overly long.
Probably a YMMV, I didn't like Antichrist very much, so maybe Von Trier not to my tastes. This was better though.

Congo - 3/10
I remember this being quite good. It’s not. It has Bruce Campbell and Tim curry in it, and Ernie Hudson is on terrific form but the film is just incredibly boring. It has a good start and watchable ending, but the middle is one long slog as nothing happens. It also suffers from being set up like a horror movie and then turning into a kids movie (with political message) for an hour then ending in crap horror territory.
Oh and to top it all off they have a talking ape called Amy…

He went all in on the nasty stuff in his later films, but he's very capable of not doing that. Dogville and Breaking the Waves are really good, albeit not exactly feel good movies...

The House That Jack Built is probably closest to Antichrist, in terms of his other films. I guess you could call the end a bit silly, but to me it's less silly than most other attempts to do Dante stuff. It was genuinely disturbing imo.

Hudson and Curry are both on a different level to everyone else in it.

The movie, not so much. But probably not as bad as people think.
It was also kinda nice to have a 'family' comic book movie that wasn't too dark or violent.
Doom being the bad guy of of Charmed took away a bit of his impact though. Not that I have anything against the actor particularly.

Incidentally, is this on streaming somewhere? I've never seen it since. Maybe enough time has passed and the wounds are sufficiently healed.

Monkey Man. 6.8 /10
Aesthetically pleasing, but I didn't like the story telling, and bits of it felt very heavy handed. It feels like it was written as longer film, story got cut for time reasons but they left a bunch of now-reduntant characters in. The fighting and violence were satisfying.

Highlander 7/10. I have a huge soft spot for this, despite its very obvious problems. I love the soundtrack, the idea and it's very quotable. Despite the poor script. The biggest issue on rewatch with the eldest was the pacing. It was all over the place, far more than I expected. Still great fun though.
