I wish it was 4K on Apple; can imagine it would look glorious All of Us Strangers 9.58/10 (Disney) This is just achingly sad and beautifully acted. A lonely man, played by Andrew Scott moves into a London tower block and forms a gay relationship with another damaged soul. Scott’s character can also visit his childhood home and chat with his deceased parents. There’s no hokum, it’s played ‘straight” and how is never explored. I don’t want to spoil it, but it’s deeply moving. I thought Scott and Claire Foy in particular were superb. Highly recommended, but prepare to cry. It was 4K on Apple.

Godzilla x Kong : The New Empire - the busiest my local Cineworld has been this year I think
Did you like Godzilla vs Kong? Well pop along to your local cinema for pretty much more of the same really but with lots more of the Upside Down, I mean Hollow Earth. In the Hollow Earth Kong continues to search for more of his ape people while on Earth, Godzilla "protects" humanity from incursions and keep the kaijus that live up top under some sort of control.
Considering the huge amount of fucking damage Godzilla that he does "protecting" cities maybe it'd be best if he just fucked off. Seriously he's a bloody menace. Anyone who watched Monarch will be wondering if cities other than Tokyo have loads of missile batteries and shelters in case a monster turns up, the answer is clearly "nah".
So if you want to see lots of monsters beating the shit out of each other, lots of landmarks get wrecked while Godzilla does his travels, a pretty much nonsensical plot about what's going on in Hollow Earth involving an evil ape with his enslaved Kaiju and some bizarre physics give it a watch. I enjoyed myself but I'd doubt it'll be anywhere my top 10 of 2024.
If you want to see a truly great Godzilla film, watch "Godzilla Minus One", not only is it a far better film, this one is more Kong's picture than the radioactive lizard's.

Re-watched Dune (Denis Villeneuve) today. Loved it, felt a lot more cohesive and enjoyable than watching it first time round at the cinema. Guess I felt overwhelmed with the scale of it. Rewatching it, it’s actually relatively straight forward but it just has that Villeneuve touch meaning the story is told well as well as adding some fantastic spectacle to proceedings.
I was hoping to catch the second one at the cinema this weekend but it seems it’s been relegated to the smaller lounge screens already. So may wait for it and watch it at home.

Watch it at the cinema, even if it's not the bigger screens. You have to see it at the cinema.

I love how Hollywood Godzilla went from current day to made up future bullshit.

Why is Kong a cyberpunk? Doesn’t he have a cybernetic arm in this one?

His upgrade is explained with a bit of convenient placing of where his power fist is after he gets a bit cold.

Saw Immaculate this evening. Didn't know huge amounts about this, besides being a horror film featuring nuns. Turns out it was far more Easter themed then expected.
Totally batshit, mostly in a good way. I think there was probably a better film that didn't feel the need to resort to as many horror tropes, but those were reasonably effective as well. The final sequence is really quite something too.
Recommended.

Anatomy of a fall up on Prime. Excellent film, but a difficult watch in some ways. Heavy dialogue

Is that Car commercial type pic I've been seeing on X actually in the film?

Had the urge to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey which I did last night. Pretty much seen it all in bits, but not in it's entirety. It's amazing scene to scene, but I still don't get it. Like most of it is fine, it's just that ending.
Some of the long shots of space ships and the sound track reminded me of Alien/Aliens, the weird wormhole bit of Interstellar. I was surprised how much this has influenced stuff.
It's hard to give it a score, as its such a seminal movie and visually it still holds up well today.

Considering how little cars are used in the film I didn't notice any obvious product placement of one, not seen the ad.

It's over and done in about a second or so, anyone complaining about that must have exploded in indignation watching Barbie.

The Creator
Gareth Edwards gets a decent budget and makes another very good sci-fi. Excellent visuals, thoughtful plot, some nice ideas, and the best child actor since Haley Joel Osment.
8/10

Letting the thing wash over you is the point, the confusion is the point, the inscrutability is the point. To me that's always been the difference between Kubrick and someone like Nolan (or at least the Nolan that directed Interstellar). Kubrick will lead you into another dimension not really caring if you understand it or not, while Nolan will have a character explain what a black hole is to a literal astronaut.

Also, the 2001 book sequels explain what the monolith is, and honestly that kind of ruins it for me. Not completely - the movie is still great - but I prefer not knowing.

Sony films are the worst for product placement. Stephen Graham shilling Bravia TVs in Venom 2 was particularly conspicuous.

Damsel. 6/10. Bit of a throwback to 80s films again, bar some iffy CGI scenery, it's not bad. MBB does OK, Robin Wright probably the highlight though. Ray Winston, is not.

Poor Things - 8/10 Visually absolutely stunning in places. Stone was fantastic, Ruffalo absolutely chewed the scenery and Dafoe didn't seem to know what accent he was trying to pull off. Cracking stuff.
Spring - 7/10 A decent Motorhead/Benson joint. Not top tier, but a heck of a lot better than that Anthony Mackie one. I should probably give that another go next actually.
Crimes of the Future - ?/10 This has to be up there with Titane in the "I never want to watch that again, but I think I enjoyed it..." stakes. That's some seriously fucking weird shit, man.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 (netflix)
All the worst traits of a Dreamworks film in one movie with no real redeeming features like good characters or plot or emotional core. Its wall-to-wall outdated pop culture references, dodgy celebrity casting and obvious obnoxious needle drops. My boy lost interest pretty quickly.
Idiocracy (disney+)
This has dated pretty horribly. Not that people aren’t getting dumber, more that everything in this feels like a very 1999-2001 kind of dumb that was kind of on the way out even when this was made a couple of years later. Its all a bit too obvious and zany too. Feels like maybe Judge thought he was getting left behind by South Park taking a more directly satirical turn around this time and churned out this as a sub-Matt & Trey effort to play catch up with.
There are occasional laughs here and there but its not sharp enough to be a knowing watch and not dumb enough to be a stupid laugh. Both things Matt & Trey delivered loads of back then. When I turned it off I caught a few minutes of Jackass Forever on Film4 and that was a lot funnier by just embracing being a totally dumb and revelling in it.

Silent Night (2023)
An action thriller thing about a guy (played by Joel Kinnaman) whose kid gets killed, who then proceeds to basically ignore his also-grieving wife to go on a revenge tour against Mexicans.
It's directed by John Woo! He's back in Hollywood after more than 20 years, directing a movie with almost no dialogue! Sounds great, right?
It's not. It barely rises to the level of a C-tier Taken ripoff. It takes far too long to get to the fireworks factory, and when it does, it feels like something any other journeyman director could have done instead.
It doesn't feel like a John Woo movie at all, basically. Which is good in a way, because it allows me to forget that it ever existed and pretend that he stopped making movies decades ago (though Red Cliff was pretty great)
It's probably worth more than a 4/10, but it loses points for disappointing me, so...
4/10
