Virtual spaces are absolutely the future. But when it's presented as a 1980s VR simulator where you can buy funny hats it's hard for people to get their head around why the technology needs to exist.
A platform seemingly used exclusively by full time mommies and fat auld raging das probably isn't the ship to sail us into that future either.

Back in the days of yore I made a female avatar for PlayStation Home and was subsequently followed around at all times by a gang of dancing perverts, so I’m actually quite looking forward to seeing how that works out for them in VR.

Yeah, this is how I feel, and I love VR stuff. I can't afford a VR rig or a beefy enough PC for one but I have enjoyed it when I've had a go on someone else's. The last thing I want is that wanker Zuckerberg in charge of it all. |

Yeah, this is how I feel, and I love VR stuff. I can't afford a VR rig or a beefy enough PC for one but I have enjoyed it when I've had a go on someone else's. This probably gives the tech billionaires too much credit by assuming they've read Snow Crash when in actuality they've only read Ready Player One. Also, pretty sure when Zuckerberg uses the term "metaverse" what he really means is "more efficient ways to harvest data and more prolonged user engagement to boost advertising revenue" rather than something like Second Life. |

I've never been on Facebook, Whatsapp, Linkedin, TikTok, Instagram...
A few years back I had a Twitter account just for news. After a year or more I closed and made a new Twitter profile (for privacy's sake).
When I started re-following all the same news sources, Twitter thought I was a bot and asked me to upload passport pics. So that was the end of the only social network for me.
I use email, sms, phone and I play with friends on xbox/playstation but that's about it.
From what I've read, this has been a sensible choice for my mental health, but I know I'm left out of certain conversations which is a pity.
Hopefully these companies die soon.

No wires, much lighter kit, hand-tracking built in so you don't need controllers, just a pair of glasses. I have zero interest in this Metaverse horseshit though, particularly not with Zuckerberg in charge. Never once have I sat in my living room and thought, "What would make this more cozy is wall-to-wall streaming advertising" |
